The purpose of this article is to deepen the current situation of NEET – that is to say young people who do not study, work or training. The article will be covered from a global approach with the aim of examining the structural causes that determine this situation. Furthemore, in order to understand this approach it is important to take into account the heterogeneity of this group, the connections with the personal careers of social exclusion that take place in the early leaving of formal protection systems and the intervention that is made from the social services to prevent this situation. Only in this way it will be possible to predict which is their real situation in order to be able to design and execute programs that can close the door to inequalities and social disconnection to which NEET are exposed.

This study examines the social exclusion characteristics of a sample of users of primary care social services in two local entities in Spain. The objective of this study was to identify the intensity and scope of social exclusion in an exploratory way and to look at the typology of existing exclusionary situations to inform policy making and professional practice. Data from 1009 users were collected by primary care social services professionals, completing the Social Exclusion Scale of the University of Alicante (SES-UA). The dimensions with the greatest levels of social exclusion in the study population were those related to work/employment, income and education and training. The dimensions with an intermediate level of exclusion were those related to housing and social isolation. Social acceptance, family and social conflict and health were the dimensions with the lowest levels of exclusion. The analysis also showed the existence of five significantly different groups, that showed five different life trajectories along the continuum between social exclusion and social inclusion. The results show the importance and utility of developing professional and policy intervention protocols based on research evidence, with the objective of improving the quality of life of the users.

Educational Work with Socially Excluded Girls – in Terms of the Blessed Maria Karłowska (1865–1935) This text presents the concept of education developed by Blessed Maria Karłowska (1865–1935). The foundress of the Congregation of the Shepherds of Divine Providence worked all her life with socially excluded people, especially girls and young women who were prostitutes. She established care and educational centers for them, where, together with her colleagues, she helped them to overcome their life crises. Several important assumptions can be distinguished in the educational system introduced by Karłowska. First of all, the social and moral development of the pupil was important. Much emphasis was placed on apprenticeship and work. Education to freedom, independence, and citizenship was also a priority, which was based on the assumptions of the pedagogy of dialogue and love. The educators had to show patience and understanding, work on the resources of the charges, and also prevent risky behaviors. Despite the passage of time, this concept has not lost its importance as it is based on universal values that are fundamental in educational work with young people at risk of social exclusion.

In the current situation, education, science and technology have been the support that society has had to face the difficulties of all kinds unleashed as a result of the crisis. For this reason, the curricula have been rethought seeking to be “flexible” to accommodate the real situation of the students, an example of this is the implementation of natural science classroom projects supported from the contextualization of knowledge, since remote teaching It has broken the social bonds that are built in the classroom and that are essential when generating meaningful learning. An effective way of achieving this contextualization is to recognize the elements that the student has at home and that, due to their familiarity, allow them to permeate the process of building theoretical school models. Thus, in this document an educational experience is outlined, which from the context of scientific knowledge, allowed the construction of school scientific models.

AbstractThe Children's Fund involved the development of partnerships in every local authority in England to prevent the social exclusion of children and young people. This article draws from the national evaluation of this initiative to consider the strategies used to implement the Fund, and reflect on their capacity to address the multiple dimensions of exclusion experienced by marginalised groups of children and young people. It discusses the contested nature of the concept of social exclusion, but argues that this is a useful framework for understanding the processes by which children may become excluded and for assessing the capacity of strategies to address this. It concludes that the Children's Fund is likely to have limited long-term impact in this respect.

This paper examines the role of Christian congregations in addressing the social exclusion barriers experienced by seasonal agricultural workers (SAWs). This research study reviews the ways in which local churches support SAWs specifically in the Niagara Region. This paper also examines the benefits and limitations of this support and thus offers recommendations to enhance the future work of congregations in this area. This study reveals the evolving role of Christian congregations from offering only fellowship and spiritual services to SAWs to responding to their true needs in areas such as transportation, health care, language, and social inclusion. Because SAWs continue to face significant social exclusion barriers and still remain ineligible for settlement services in Ontario, it is important that congregations continue to do this work, meeting the needs of SAWs and growing in their ability as social service providers. Key words: seasonal agricultural workers (SAWs), congregations, Christian, the Niagara Region, social services, settlement support, social exclusion, needs

High expectations of contact persons? A study of parental practices and the contact person intervention for young people in social servicesA contact person for teenagers, an intervention offered by the social services, is discussed in this article on the basis of a qualitative study accomplished in 2010–2014. It is based on focus groups, documents and interviews with teenagers, parents, contact persons and social workers. Research dealing with the contact person intervention takes partly contradictory views. In qualitative studies the contact person system has been described as a positive intervention of all categories involved. During the last few years it has been questioned, especially in a comprehensive quantitative study, indicating that the intervention even seemed to increase the risk of being placed in out-of-home care in the future. In this article we present a deepened picture of the teenagers in the study with a focus on their backgrounds and life situations. The background factors we have discovered, often invisible in a register study, point to the very complex situations the social services have to handle. Another part deals with how the intervention can be understood in relation to parenting and specifically which dimensions of parenting the social services judge as inadequate. In the analysis of the contact persons’ assignments it is obvious that the social services plan the intervention based on the parents inabilities to guide and support their teenagers. The contact person is often supposed to act as a ”compensating” parent.

Maus Tratos. Envelhecimento. Abstract: This article has the intention to analyze the question of the violence against aged people in the city of Itabuna, southern Bahia state, from denunciations received by the City council. The denounced cases and the ones which were found out in the research reflect how the public power treats the elder families. It also reflects that the violence against aged is associated with the fragile affective bonds constructed by these families, as well as the social disconnection which they are submitted. The aged who is under somebody’s care can be victim of the public indifference, that is, each time more incapable to guarantee entailing and social belonging to many Brazilians, and victim of the transitory values incorporated by the young people, where the aged one does not have space. Keywords: Violence. Maltreatment. Aging.
