Assessment is an integral part of the teaching-learning process in both conventional and distance education contexts. Literature suggests that with the increase in the use of Information and Communications Technology in the delivery of learning, a number of institutions are resorting to formative assessment practices that are mediated by technology to not only provide flexible and more efficient means of assessment but also attain improved learning outcomes. This paper investigated student perceptions of the effectiveness of different types of formative assessment used in online learning environments. A 31-item questionnaire was used to gather data on student perceptions. On the level of difficulty, students generally perceived the various types of formative assessment as having no significant differences. Results further indicated that students received more prompt feedback from peer assessment and computer-marked assessment, compared to teacher-marked assessment. The findings of this study will support practitioners in eLearning to use formative assessment and feedback mechanisms more effectively to influence student engagement as well as learning outcomes.

Intra-team peer assessments have become the norm for performance and attribute assessment in problem and project based learning activities. However, research on the effects of interpersonal variables on these assessment practices is limited. This study examined the relationship between interpersonal variables and student perceptions on the validity of peer assessment. In order to understand the relationship between social interaction and its effects on peer assessment, four interpersonal variables were identified in this study: psychological safety, value diversity, interdependence, and trust. Fifty five undergraduate engineering students working in teams of 5 to 6 participated in a survey after having completed their first formative peer assessment. Preliminary findings from this study and evidence from other studies support the view that interpersonal variables have the potential to affect peer assessment and influence the learning outcomes.

This study aimed at exploring the impact of formative assessment practices on student motivation for learning the English language. As Leahy, Lyon, Thompson, and Wiliam (2005) stated, education needs to change its function from collecting the results of right or wrong, and to encourage teachers in gathering information that will affect the educational decisions. This study is a non-experimental, correlational study, to describe the relationship between formative assessment practices and motivation for leaning. The instrument used was a questionnaire on high school students from public and private schools, who were selected randomly by stratified sampling. They belonged to three major high schools of Durres, Albania. The findings of this study showed that factors like strategic questions used by the teacher during formative assessment, student’s portfolio, self-assessment, and peer assessment affected positively the motivation for learning the English language. The results of the regression equation revealed that from four independent variables, the factor that had the greatest impact on motivation for learning were strategic questions used by the teacher during formative assessment, followed by self-assessment, peer assessment and student’s portfolio. This study identified ways of intervention to promote motivation for learning the English language. The study will contribute in the Albanian context showing how assessment practices made an impact on student motivation. It will help educational institutions and policy makers, foreign language teachers in improving the assessment practices to promote student motivation in learning the English language.

One of the effort to overcome the ineffectiveness of face-to-face learning is to extend the interaction outside the classroom framework. In this case, advances in information technology can be utilized. The use of technology that functions like classroom face-to-face is through online learning. This study aims to find out: (1) student perceptions of online learning (a Moodle platform); and (2) the effect of student perceptions of online learning on the learning outcomes of Vocational Theory course. The research object was 117 students. The data analysis being used were descriptive statistics and Kendall's tau. The results of the study indicate that online learning is an excellent medium to complement face-to-face learning. The contribution of the perception of learning outcomes found in this study is only 1.70%. It can be said that 98.0% of learning outcomes are determined by other factorsUpaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengatasi masalah ketidak efektifan pembelajaran tatap muka adalah dengan membuat ekstensi berinteraksi di luar kelas. Dalam hal ini, kemajuan teknologi informasi dapat dimanfaatkan. Penggunaan teknologi informasi yang memiliki fungsi seperti layaknya tatap muka dalam kelas tersedia melalui pembelajaran online. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) persepsi mahasiswa terhadap pembelajaran online (plat form Moodle); dan (2) pengaruh persepsi mahasiswa pada pembelajaran online terhadap hasil belajar Teori Kejuruan. Objek penelitian berjumlah 117 orang mahasiswa. Teknik analisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan Kendall's tau. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran online merupakan media yang sangat baik untuk melengkapi pembelajaran tatap muka. Besarnya nilai kontribusi persepsi terhadap hasil belajar yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini hanya 1,70%, atau 98,30% hasil belajar ditentukan oleh faktor lain.

Motivation is an important parameter for successful completion of the course by the student. There are many factors that can mar such motivation like digital fatigue, poor instructional design, facilitator competency, course design, assessment practices, and student support. For online teaching learning, the authors spend a lot of time in front of computer monitors, keep typing on computer keyboard, listen to audio using headsets, etc. The students may be sitting in live meeting of their class and not understand what is expected of them. They may have a sense of being lost and demotivated. The students may not want to ask questions for fear of appearing foolish. This chapter looks into the factors related to motivation in online teaching and learning settings. It examines the factors related to motivation like deepening connections, dealing with diversity, managing conflict, teacher capabilities for online facilitation, providing feedback, providing educational resources to students, digital fatigue, assessment and evaluation practices for online learning, and conversing.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the effect of formative assessment strategies on second grade students’ singing accuracy and to examine how music educators planned for and enacted these practices. Student participants ( n = 63) were divided into three groups over a six-week period: (a) a partial treatment group where the teacher used data from the pretest to improve areas of singing weakness; (b) a full treatment group where the teacher used data to improve areas of weakness and engaged students in self- and peer-assessment techniques; and (c) a control group who received no formalized treatment. Linear regression analysis indicates that the “partial treatment” group had the largest gains in singing accuracy, but the case study analysis revealed that the teachers’ knowledge and values mediated their enactment of these practices as they adopted and adapted them in varied ways. The “partial treatment” teacher’s motivation and proclivity for creating new assessment practices indicates that gains in this group’s singing accuracy may have been due to teacher effects and not the strategies themselves. Implications for teacher professional development and practical considerations for embedding meaningful formative assessment in music contexts are provided.

Assessment is the key element of teaching learning process in schools. Formative assessment is generally accepted as a valuable component of teachers’ classroom assessment strategies. The study intends to explore the level of association of formative assessment with academic performance of secondary school students and to analyze the practices of formative assessment in schools. The study was descriptive in nature. The focus group interviews and observation techniques were used to gather information regarding academic, social, emotional, and cultural activities of students in schools. The population of the study comprises over all the principals, teachers and students of FGEIs of Lahore region. Sample was drawn by using simple random technique. The findings of the study revealed that teachers don’t have enough knowledge about formative assessment but they possess appropriate understanding of summative assessment. Replication of test is the exclusive kind of assessment for improvement of different learning skills of students. It was recommended that authorities may develop and execute some plan to train and give awareness to the administration and teaching staff about the use and importance of formative assessment during teaching-learning process in schools

The fact that people behave and learn in a different pace requires individual differences to be properly considered in the teaching/learning process. Among several cognitive theories that could be used for this purpose, a promising one is to explore the use of students' learning styles (LSs), with several research studies indicating that their use has positive impacts on learning outcomes. At the same time, Ubiquitous Learning Environments (ULEs) have the potential to make the multimedia authoring of Learning Objects (LOs) an automated process, resulting on even larger educational content repositories and increasing the need for more adequate presentation strategies to students. This article presents an approach for creating and personalizing LOs through a probabilistic proposal of the Felder and Silverman Learning Styles Model. A prototype of the proposed model was integrated into a ubiquitous educational platform and experimented in real settings. Results indicate the existence of correlations between different types of interactions carried out by students and their respective LSs.

Teaching and learning has changed and performed new challenge to provide attracting instruct for students to be active in online learning. The way to run the process of teaching and learning are modified. The use of technology in communicating the teaching-learning material is challenging. Different types of instructions motivate different to students to follow the online class activities. The communication delivered through the instructions becomes a key to guide the process of online teaching and learning. How the instructions performed by the teacher create interesting interaction in online learning. So, it is interesting to analyze further how the instructions work to activate the students’ involvement in online teaching-learning. This research is to describe how the types of instructions performed in online teaching and learning based on the implementation of teaching model. The data is collected from documents of lesson instruction design. This research uses qualitative approach to analyze the data. The result of the research is analyzed related to the types of instructions used in processing the learning activites through instructions provided by the teacher. The conclusion found three types of appropriate instructions to motivate and activate students in the process of online teaching and learning.

‘Assessment’ and ‘feedback’ are inherently embedded in a course curriculum of engineering education settings. These components are indispensable for the teaching-learning processes. It is observed that engineering faculty members do not require any ‘teacher-training’ to join the engineering institutions across the globe. Hence, they may not have adequate experience in assessing students’ performances and providing feedback to students. Only a few research studies have been carried out on assessment and feedback from the engineering education context. Therefore, this paper attempts to critically analyse the literature pertaining to learning through different types and methods of assessment practices in the engineering education settings. Further, it examines the significance of qualitative feedback in assessment and the principles of good feedback practice. It highlights the implications of assessing student performance and providing feedback from the engineering education perspective. Finally, the paper offers some recommendations on assessment and feedback practices in the engineering education settings.

Nowadays, Information and Communication Technologies play an important role in the teaching-learning process. Universities have incorporated different platforms specifically designed to educational institutions; among others Moodle and Sakai are being used in Spanish Universities. In particular, the Universitat Politècnica de València has adopted the PoliformaT platform, adapted from Sakai. It consists on different tools that facilitate the teaching and learning processes and the teacher–student communication. It enables teachers to improve their instructional design and it is of key importance in blended learning and flipped classroom approach. Lessons is a specific tool available in PoliformaT, which enables the organization of the different educational resources. It combines lecture slides, video lectures (from the teacher or from others sources), exams (quizzes, self-/peer-assessment), tasks and so on. The extensive use of the online platform in the daily learning of the subject, by several teachers and different student groups, needs to pay special attention to the resources organization. In contrary case, the subject platform can become a mess, losing its usefulness. In this paper, the utilization of Lessons by students in two first course subjects at the Universitat Politècnica de València is studied. The teachers of physics of the Aerospace Engineering Degree and electricity of Electronic and Automatic Engineering Degree have designed the course activities by means of the Lessons tool. There are important research questions related to the Lessons tool: how often, when, and how students access to the different contents?, do they think it is useful? At a second level, one can be asked if student perceptions are related to learning outcomes. We will use students' learning tracks, student’s survey and scores to answer these questions.
