Numeracy as Cultural Practice: An Examination of Numbers in Magazines for Children, Teenagers, and Adults

Many have argued for the importance of numeracy, yet little is known about the opportunities for numeracy presented to people in their daily lives. In this study, we analyzed and compared the characteristics of rational numbers in magazines written for children, teenagers, and adults. Our analysis indicates that difficult mathematical concepts that appear in the media, such as fractions, percents, and averages, are much more prevalent in adults' magazines than in those written for children and teenagers. Adults are often presented with rational numbers that are related to each other. Numbers in teenagers' texts do not appear to form a transition to those found in adults' texts, despite the fact that through formal schooling teenagers have covered all the mathematical concepts that are frequently found in adults' texts. Implications for preparing students for the numeracy demands of everyday life are discussed.

This article explores yet another paradox – aside from the privacy paradox – related to the datafication of media: citizens trust least the media they use most It investigates the role that daily life plays in shaping the trust that citizens place in datafied media. The study reveals five sets of heuristics guiding the trust assessments of citizens: (1) characteristics of media organisations, (2) old media standards, (3) context of use and purpose, (4) experiences of datafication and (5) understandings of datafication. The article discusses the use of these heuristics and the value that everyday life holds in assessing trust in datafied media. It concludes that, guided by a partial ‘structure of perception’ and enticed into trusting datafied media in the context of their daily lives, citizens may be highly concerned by the datafication of media but use them nevertheless.

AbstractThe paper aims to demonstrate that violence is far from a regular practice in Ultra groups, despite its notorious visibility as transmitted by the media. The paper attempts to demonstrate that Ultra groups are a social space of leisure for young people, rather than a space for violence. Actually, having used observation through direct participation and having registered the discourses of Ultra group members, it is possible to demonstrate that life in these groups represents, for many, not only a break from difficult everyday life, but also the only and/or the most important moment of social leisure in their lives.The object of this research was four Ultra groups who support the teams of Oporto City: Super Dragõe, Colectivo Ultras 95 (both support Futebol Clube do Porto), Panteras Ngeras (supporting Boavista Futebol Clube), and Alma Salgueirista (supporting Sport Comércio e Salgueiros). The research was based on observation through direct participation made among the groups over six years. Also conducted were 90 semi-structured interviews, 20 autobiographical narratives, and surveys (sample 206 for estimated n=1766).

Mathematical concepts are always useful in everyday life to solve problems at hand. Learning mathematics that is associated with the surrounding (contextual) circumstances, especially in the culture of an area, is expected to be able to improve the ability of students in learning. Learning mathematics which is associated with the culture of an area is called ethnomathematics. Moreover, the government is currently promoting literacy. Literacy in mathematics is called mathematical literacy/mathematical literacy is the knowledge to know and apply basic mathematics every day such as to communicate both orally and in writing, to reason, and to solve problems. This service is carried out through a zoom meeting application that is given to 6th semester students, as a preparation effort before students carry out the Introduction to Learning Environment (PLP) at school. This service method uses the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. In the results of this service, a discussion was held on the ethnomathematics of the Bentian Dayak tribe in relation to learning mathematics and participants were able to make mathematical literacy questions. In the end, participants will be able to apply ethnomathematics and mathematical literacy in learning

New media tools and the corresponding digital networks have begun to take part in the centre of our daily lives, thereby caused a practice of everyday life in digital space. In Twitter, a network in which users are involved through the machines, the concepts such as life, time, space, rhythm have developed. This study focuses on the constitution of everyday life in digital space. Twitter is a digital space that users do their everyday life practices in this network and are involved in through the machines. A sample of 10 Turkish users was selected with social network analysis to discover everyday life practices in this digital space. The content produced by this sample was observed employing digital ethnography and analysed by the sociology of everyday life. It is observed that Twitter creates its own rhythm. Observations show in Twitter that tactics have been produced, and strategies have been tried to be turned down with these tactics and acted rhythmic practices as forms of production and consumption in everyday life. People tend to follow similar others on Twitter, and accordingly, content is being produced for an imaginary community.

This article addresses the independent media after the 2013 demonstrations in Brazil, taking as object of analysis the notion of independence built by the collective Jornalistas Livres (Free Journalists) in their daily lives, understood here as central to the social structures (re) production and change, in order to to understand how communication is inscribed in the conquest, maintenance and dispute of hegemony. It is understood here that an independent media is not unique, assuming, on the contrary, different meanings in several contexts. Our objective give focus to the idea of independence, discussing potentialities and limitations to the initiatives that operate under this logic. Anchored in a critical and dialectical perspective, we established as methodological procedures the bibliographic review, documentary survey and discourse analysis.

Culture-based education has a vital role of individuals and communities to achieve progressivity in all aspects of life. Math-based culture called ethnomathematics is an approach that can be used to explain the role of mathematics in a multicultural society. Mathematical concepts used to explore the existence of mathematics in culture, especially traditional societies of Lampung. This study aims to describe the results of exploration Lampung Ethnomathematics with this kind of exploratory research as well as an ethnographic approach. The results showed that without studying the mathematical concept, traditional society of Lampung have applied these concepts in their daily lives using ethnomathematics. Proved the existence of mathematical concepts contained in custom home building, the local unit of  Lampung, geometric shapes motif of tapis, as well as traditional games Lampung. Researchers suggest the results of this study to (a) used as alternative ideas mathematics learning outside the classroom, (b) introduced in learning formal mathematics as initial capital to teach the concept of mathematics to students, (c) be used as reference material for preparing a matter of mathematical problem-solving context.

A primeira cena está em Lima Barreto, em Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha, ao referir a Revolta da Vacina no Rio de Janeiro do século XX, comparada às manifestações de 2013 e 2014 no país; a segunda é a espetacularização da mídia sobre as manifestações de rua em 2013 e 2014, e sobre o processo de impedimento do mandato presidencial de Dilma Rousseff em 2015; a terceira é uma cena da vida cotidiana de uma moça de Brasília em outubro de 2014. This article draws on an ethnographic research that focuses on the cultural practice of female-paid matrimonial funding, ampa co’i ndai (ACN), among semi-urban Bimanese Muslims of Eastern Indonesia. The practice takes place when the bride, with the help of her parents and female relatives, pays her marriage payment (co’i, including mahr). It is used only when the prospective groom is a government employee, for it is assumed as a social status raiser. During the declaration of marriage, the payment is announced to have come from the groom. This article uses the practice as a site to examine the particularity of practising Islamic laws in everyday life of eastern Indonesian Muslims. The narratives of nineteen Muslim women who have been involved in ACN reveal what its functions as an equalising mechanism, through which gendered power-relations is minimised while perpetuating traditional position of wives and husbands as a complementary couple within their family as well as before society. I argue that  ACN has been seen as a modified understanding of kafā’a in fiqh which means “equality” to “complementarity.” However, this local understanding of kafā’a is a testament to the complexities of gender power relations.[Artikel ini adalah penelitian etnografi tentang praktik AMPA co’i ndai (ACN) di kalangan masyarakat semi-urban muslim Bima di kawasan timur Indonesia. Budaya ini dilaksanakan dengan cara pengantin perempuan, dengan bantuan orang tua dan saudara perempuannya, menyediakan biaya pernikahan (co’i dan mahar). Tradisi ini dipraktikkan hanya ketika calon pengantin pria adalah pegawai negeri, yang diasumsikan memiliki status sosial yang lebih. Namun, saat resepsi pernikahan, deiumumkan bahwa biaya-biaya berasal dari pengantin pria. Narasi kehidupan dari sembilan belas perempuan yang terlibat mengungkapkan fungsi ACN sebagai mekanisme penyetaraan gender dengan meminimalkan relasi kuasa serta nmendudukkan pasangan untuk saling melengkapi dalam keluarga maupun masyarakat. Praktik ACN dapat dilihat sebagai bentuk lokal pemahaman konsep kafā’a, yang berarti “kesetaraan” untuk “melengkapi”. Namun, pemahaman lokal kafā’a ini merupakan bukti kompleksitas relasi kuasa dalam masalah gender.]

Abstract:Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (LPKD) can help students understand the concept of material, both theoretically and in real events that often occur in everyday life. This study tries to determine the development process and quality of LKPD to improve students' understanding the concepts of algebra. The development research used refers to the Plomps model, which includes 4 phases: (a) the initial investigation, (b) the design, (c) the realization, and (d) the test, evaluation, and revision. The product assessment instrument used was the LKPD validation sheet, the LKPD observance sheet, student and teacher response questionnaires, student and teacher activity observation sheets, and tests of students' ability to understand mathematical concepts. The LKPD that was designed and tested on grade VII students at one of the schools in Soppeng had met the criteria of being valid, effective, and practical.Abstrak:Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (LPKD) berbasis masalah dapat membantu peserta didik memahami konsep materi, baik secara teori maupun dalam peristiwa nyata yang sering terjadi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini mencoba mengetahui proses pengembangan dan kualitas LKPD matematika berbasis masalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep aljabar peserta didik. Penelitian pengembangan yang digunakan mengacu pada model pengembangan Plomp, yang meliputi 4 fase, yaitu: (a) fase investigasi awal, (b) fase desain, (c) fase realisasi, dan (d) fase tes, evaluasi, dan revisi. Instrumen penilaian produk yang digunakan adalah lembar validasi LKPD, lembar pengamatan keterlaksaan LKPD, angket respon peserta didik dan guru, lembar pengamatan aktivitas peserta didik dan guru, dan tes kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematika peserta didik. LKPD yang didesain dan diujicobakan kepada siswa kelas VII di salah satu sekolah di Soppeng telah memenuhi kriteria valid, efektif dan praktis.
