Non-welded pipe fitting connections have been available in the maritime industry for years but with advanced engineering the market is opening up to the technology. As the US shipbuilding industry experiences an influx of business and skilled welders are in high-demand, non-welded pipe fitting technology is becoming a go-to product in shipyards across the country. In this presentation,, Fred Loomis, will share his experiences with non-welded pipe fitting technologies, and discuss how this type of product benefits the shipyard and end user.

Worker safety is an issue of major concern worldwide. Evidence to this fact is noted with recent efforts to harmonize US machine safety standards with that of the European Machinery Directive. Changes to the US standards have a dramatic affect on new equipment design. Additionally, older machinery that is still in use must now be upgraded to meet these new requirements. In other words, the end user must now follow the same standards as new equipment manufacturers. Paper published with permission.

This study measures and decomposes green productivity growth of Korean manufacturing industries between 2004 and 2010 using the Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index. We focus on differences in the measures of productivity growth by distinguishing carbon emissions from either end-user industries or the electricity generation industry. Empirical results suggest three main findings. First, the efficiency of total emissions is higher than that of direct emissions except for the shipbuilding industry. Second, green productivity in the manufacturing sector increased during the study period. Finally, green productivity depends on the indirect emissions of each industry. These results indicate that policymakers need to deliberately develop policy tools for mitigating carbon emissions of the manufacturing industrial sectors based on our empirical findings.

3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) (in the industrial context) is an innovative, as opposed to subtractive, technology, bringing new opportunities and benefits to the spare part supply chain (SPSC). The aim of this work is to capture the views of the stakeholders at the end of the chain, extruding factors that will benefit the end-user and the factors that are likely to be an obstacle, by employing the questionnaire method. Company objectives regarding spares (cost reductions, improvement of services, space reduction) have been prioritized differently by the stakeholders. The most important barriers according to the participants are the quality assurance of the spare parts made by the new technology followed by the know-how and skills of staff. Other views such as suitable parts are suggested. The practical value of this work, in addition to assessing the readiness of the industry, is that it provides guidance for the successful implementation of AM in the maritime industry.

Recently, most of fatigue cracks in ship structures are reported within a few years after delivery. This type of fatigue characteristics cannot be explained adequately by the S-N curve based on high cycle fatigue. Calculation results under critical loading conditions reveal that stress magnitude higher than three times the yield stress occurs at some critical locations. It shows the fatigue cracks are related to low cycle fatigue. But the existing recommended design procedures in maritime industry do not properly cover low cycle fatigue problems. This work represents the first step in an effort to develop a design code that addresses low cycle fatigue problems. Low cycle fatigue test for uniform round specimen made of base/weld metal and for cruciform welded joint are carried out under constant amplitude alternating load, controlled by strain. Strain-cycle curves for the base metal and weld joints show good agreement with published data as well as some code recommended design curves.

<p>Desde 1912, inúmeros textos – romances, programas de rádio, histórias em quadrinhos, seriados de televisão, filmes – produziram e articularam representações da África em narrativas envolvendo Tarzan, criado pelo estadunidense Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). Tomando o nome de “África” como referência, os textos que orbitam e habitam o nome de “Tarzan” pertencem a uma genealogia ocidental e a uma história transcultural. Após abordar a economia da marca registrada “Tarzan ®” em sua circulação global, uma descrição breve e esquemática da filmografia de Tarzan me permite interrogar o que chamo de nomenclausura ocidentalista da “África”. Finalmente, por meio de uma leitura atenta de Moi, un noir (1959), de Jean Rouch, como um prisma através do qual a circulação global de Tarzan pode ser interpretada e reinventada, sugiro possibilidades de transbordamento imaginativo, abrindo o espaçamento transcultural da escritura da “África” como economia política do nome de “África”.</p><p> </p><p>Tarzan, a Black Man: Toward a Critique of the Polit Economy of the Name of “Africa”</p><p>Since 1912, countless texts – novels, radio shows, comic strips, television serials, films – have produced and articulated representations of Africa in narratives featuring Tarzan, a character created by the US author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). Taking the name of “Africa” as a reference, the texts which surround and inhabit the name of “Tarzan” belong both to a Western genealogy and to a cross-cultural history. After examining the economy of the global circulation of the “Tarzan” trademark, I give a brief and schematic description of Tarzan’s filmography, which allows me to interrogate what I call the occidentalist name-in-closure of “Africa”. At last, by means of a close reading of Jean Rouch’s Moi, un noir (1959) as a prism through which Tarzan’s global circulation can be interpreted and reinvented, I suggest possibilities of imaginative overflow, opening up the cross-cultural spacing of the writing of “Africa” as political economy of the name of “Africa”.</p><p>Cinema | Africa | Tarzan | Racism</p>

This essay studies United States Marxist perspectives on China during US radicalism's decline in the mid-1970s. By the late 1960s, China's apparent synthesis of socialist and nationalist traditions inspired US Marxists to theorize a Chinese-led united front against American imperialism. However, China's opening up to the West in 1972 revealed US Marxists’ differing frameworks for understanding socialism and national liberation. Partly because of the confusion that followed, Marxist internationalism soon lost its intellectual weight on the US far left. Using archived Marxist periodicals from 1973 to 1979, I trace how this happened and what it meant for revolutionaries’ opposition to American empire.
