The phenomenon of devaluing of self for adolescent girls has been highlighted in previous qualitative research in a US cultural context. Carol Gilligan and her colleagues have documented a loss of connection to self and loss of voice. ‘Blending in’ pertains to such a loss of connection and voice. ‘Blending in’ emerges from many aspects of 8 Irish females’ retrospective qualitative phenomenological accounts of their adolescent experiences. These features of blending in include: a dumbing down of intellectual ability in order to fit in, a desire to be hidden in the group to ‘fade into the background’, to not stand out as being different, fear of being labelled by others and fear of challenging others. Blending in gives phenomenological support to Gilligan’s (1990) accounts of silencing and loss of relation to self in adolescent girls, to a rendering of self as other. This phenomenological exploration is resonant also with de Beauvoir’s Second Sex and to a loss of capacity for introversion in Western culture, echoing Jung (1921). Blending in requires firmer addressing in social and emotional education (SEE), especially regarding challenge to self-management as emotional impulse and behaviour regulation. Self-management as blending in risks being a process of loss of voice and alienation of self.

This article reports on a qualitative phenomenological research project that investigated the use of Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) as an intervention for retained primitive reflexes. Participants were from seven families who each had a child between the ages of 7 years and 12 years. Through semi-structured interviews, parents described their reasons for seeking additional help with their child’s development issues. They talked about finding RMT, using RMT within their family routine and their views on the costs and the benefits they experienced, both financial and time. While there has been a small amount of research into movement programmes targeting retained primitive reflexes, to date there appears to have been no studies completed on RMT. The data collected described searches for help, the stress and frustrations associated with the search and the range of interventions these parents tried. The families in this research found that RMT was easy to use within their daily routine and that it was a cost-effective, low-impact intervention. The families noticed a range of benefits for children who had completed the movements. The findings provide encouraging evidence to proceed with further study that will investigate the academic, social and emotional development of children using RMT.

For people with kidney disease, transplantation is considered a better treatment option than dialysis. A kidney transplant does not, however, ensure an illness-free existence. Compared with the wealth of literature produced from a biomedical perspective, there is little qualitative research focused on the young adult transplant experience. This article presents the findings of a phenomenological study exploring young adults’ kidney transplant experiences. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, semidirected interviews were conducted with five people. Analysis of the transcribed interviews revealed that these individuals’ kidney transplant experiences were paradoxical in nature: Participants described an existence between sickness and health, self and other, life and death. Consequently, liminality was identified as one of the experience’s key elements and used together with the concept of rites of passage in its analysis. To incorporate these experiences, the term transliminal self is proposed.

Parents raising children with autism have distinct experiences that influence their well-being, relationships, engagement with the public, and interaction with education and healthcare systems. However, experiences of fathers of children with autism have been largely overlooked by researchers. This meta-synthesis is our synthesis of qualitative accounts of fathers’ experiences and we included peer reviewed and gray literature articles that: (1) reported primary qualitative research, (2) included fathers of children with autism as participants, and (3) reported qualitative findings on the first-hand experiences of fathers of children with autism. Studies were appraised for quality and many theoretical and methodological deficiencies identified. Six studies met quality appraisal criteria and three main themes of findings from these studies were generated: (1) adaptation and concern with the future, (2) the importance of cultural context, and (3) reverence for one’s child and new opportunities. Fathers’ experiences illuminate a need for father-oriented resources that recognize fathers’ value in children’s lives.

Qualitative interviewing is widely used in educational research. However, while research related to effective interview strategies for use with many different population groups exists, the study of successful interview strategies for use with adolescent girls has been limited. To address this limitation, the researcher explores the various methodologies of qualitative interviewing, selects the most appropriate for her study, then outlines three important considerations for this population group: Ethical issues, power dynamics, and building trust. After discussing how these issues can best be addressed, the researcher includes reflections made after conducting two interviews each with eight adolescent females. The interview approach presented in this paper is not limited to use with adolescent girls but can be used in studies with varying population groups as well.

This article presents an analysis of contemporary performance art carried out by women in Galicia; a complex issue if we consider that the nature of the discipline is a practically unexplored matter. Our reflection begins by defining the typology and particularities of Galician performance art. After that, we address the performance art context in Galicia and, finally, we examine the production of three artists that we consider essential: María Marticorena, Ana Gesto and María Roja. Our methodology emerges from a thorough search of available bibliographic resources, updated fieldwork through interviews, and tracking of photographic and videographic documentation. We have opted for a qualitative interview, focused on the artists analysed in the article which can be consulted as "Annex I", attached at the end of the text. This article unveils performance art that starts in the second half of the first decade of the new century, with the almost exclusive presence of women developing heterogeneous themes but influenced by the Galician cultural context. They haven’t had institutional support or been part of self-management movements, so frequent in other parts of Spain.

The present research aimed to investigate the experienced emotions and emotional regulation in the workplace particularly in child and family social work practice in a Malaysian context. The interrelationship between emotion and emotional regulation and cultural context were explored. The overall research strategy was ethnographic. The researchers used a mixture of methods including individual interviews, participant observation, and a questionnaire. The research was conducted in three locations in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, Petaling and Kota Kinabalu. Participants consisted of child protectors and rehabilitation officers from the Malaysia Welfare Department and medical social workers in hospitals. This paper presents an analysis of individual interviews in the three locations. A total of twenty-five interviews were conducted (12 male, 13 female; age range 29-51). Data were analysed using thematic analysis . The research findings show that societal and professional cultures have influenced how child social workers regulate their experienced emotion when dealing with clients.
