Used in many communities, Theatre for Development (TfD) allows performers and audiences to interrogate their cultural history and their society to promote positive social change. While many scholars have investigated the impact of TfD on audiences, very little research has investigated the psychological impact on the performers. This study attempts to fill this research gap by interviewing participants in a theatre creation project about their views on contentious social issues before, during, and after the creation of scenes involving such themes. We hypothesized that, by performing counterattitudinal and/or unfamiliar behaviours, cognitive dissonance should arise in the performers, which should result in some level of internalisation and attitude change. Results support the hypothesis, particularly in regard to the themes of ethnicity and gender (in)equality, and point to the value of using TfD processes in divided communities. This has implications for many fields, including international development, gender studies, education, and clinical psychology.

The study of vulnerability constitutes a central axis in research work on sustainability. Social vulnerability (SV) analyzes differences in human capacity to prepare, respond and recover from the impact of a natural hazard. Although disasters threaten all the people who suffer from them, they do not affect all members of society in the same way. Social and economic inequalities make certain groups more vulnerable. Factors such as age, sex, social class and ethnic identity increase vulnerability to a natural disaster. Ten years after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, this work deepens the relationship between natural disasters, SV and gender, exploring the unequal distribution of the SV in the face of a seismic risk. The source of statistical information has been obtained from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), developed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Multicriteria decision techniques (TOPSIS) and the differences in differences (DID) technique are used to analyze variations in gender inequality in SV as a result of the catastrophic event. The results obtained reinforce the idea of the negative impact of the disaster on the SV. Additionally, an intensification of the negative effects is observed when the household is headed by a woman, increasing the gap in SV between households headed by women and the rest of the households. The conclusions obtained show additional evidence of the negative effects caused by natural disasters on women, and important implications for disaster risk management are derived that should not be ignored.

Abstract Although the scholarship on legislative behaviour widely agrees that electoral rules determine parliamentary activities, surprisingly little is known on the impact of gender quotas. We contribute to this research gap by developing an innovative interdisciplinary framework and by exploring it based on a unique dataset on varying gender quota designs throughout EU countries and parties running for the 7th term of the European Parliament (2009–2014). Based on the scholarship on gender diversity in management teams and the research on gendered processes in political parties, we argue that especially mandated gender quotas stimulate processes of social categorisation, intergroup biasing and competition due to a normative mis-fit between conceptions of gender equality and gender quotas, which in turn influences coordination and communication and hence, parliamentary activity more generally. Combining negative-binomial regression models and expert interviews, we indeed find that mandated gender quotas promote ‘individual’ parliamentary activities (e.g. speeches) and tend to impede ‘collaborative’ parliamentary activities (e.g. reports).

Youth joblessness often leaves a scar. However, some ethnic groups appear to be more successful in recovering from this than others. Using a unique dataset (ONS Longitudinal Study) linking census records for a 1% sample of the population of England and Wales, we examine the relationship between early labour market experiences and later employment outcomes for men and women from Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Caribbean origins to those of white British individuals. Our results show that, on average, being unemployed or inactive in youth (vs being employed or in education) reduces employment opportunities later in life. However, this varies greatly by ethnicity and gender: Indian and, especially, Bangladeshi men are substantively less affected by previous non-employment compared with white British men; for women, having an ethnic minority background continues to limit their labour market integration. Addressing gender and ethnic labour market inequalities requires a more nuanced understanding of how these disadvantages unfurl over time for different communities.

<p><b>The focus of this study is the impact of an international education programme on baccalaureate nursing students taken by me, their teacher/professor, to become immersed in another culture. This is an unusual undertaking for a nursing education programme but it is one to which I have been passionately committed for more than 20 years. This study examines my life-work in a deeply reflective and narrative way. I have used many sources of data to assist in the creation of my story including the framework of Moustakas (1990) and Reflective Topical Autobiography as described by Johnstone (1999). My story is woven throughout this thesis as I gradually reveal more of myself as I feel that who I am should be a continuous thread that lends credence to multiple sections of this work. Several of my reflective stories about the immersion programme experiences, called here, vignettes are included, so that my reflections, thoughts, and feelings can be expressed. “I didn’t have to create the world I wrote about it. I realized that words could tell. [sic] That there was such a thing as an emotional sentence” (Lorde, 1984, p. 85). The genesis of the emotional sentence emerged through the use of interviews with student participants and my own introspective process. In this way I came to a new understanding of myself and my passion for this way of working.</b></p> <p>I found that these educational experiences had the ability to change the personal and professional lives of participants. Students’ world views expanded exponentially as the true-life experiences in which they actively participated nurtured a profound metamorphosis. It is important to recognise the critical social nature of this work. I have carefully considered the issues of class and gender, poverty and powerlessness, and the inherent dialectic as key elements in the reflective process. The awareness of these social issues coupled with profound personal changes that occurred when immersed in another culture frame the contribution of this work to the profession of nursing in general and to midwifery specifically. In addition, I have been changed. My “way of being” has become radically different. I realise that I facilitate life transformation for participants by providing the platform; I realise the connection, potency, and power of student-teacher relationships; and most of all I learned that I teach from the heart.</p>

Understanding the impact of various diversity management (DM) practices in terms of their effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes within the organisation is a prevalent research gap in the general DM literature and the new stream of literature on DM in the research, development, and innovation (RDI) sector. Therefore, this article reviews the literature on gender diversity practices in RDI workplaces and how DM contributes to gender equality outcomes. For this purpose, we introduced a conceptual framework to demonstrate the interrelatedness of the forms and reasons for gender inequality, and the choice of DM practices and their outcomes. Moreover, we compiled an extensive list of DM practices for practitioners related to how to address the different forms and underlying reasons for gender inequality. Finally, by comparing the literature on DM outcomes in the business and the RDI sector, we concluded that research on measuring the outcomes of DM practices was less developed for RDI organisations, but gaps of knowledge on the outcomes of DM practices prevailed in both sectors. Organisational contexts in which specific diversity practices were implemented had a significant role in determining their effectiveness,highlighting the relevance of the institutionalist theory.

This chapter examines youth civic engagement in Chicago, with particular emphasis on young people's attitudes regarding democracy. Drawing on interviews with directors and youth workers in a variety of organizations throughout the city, it looks at young people participating in empowerment projects and how they engage. The discussion focuses on youth activists' demographics and families as well as early influences on them, their self-perceptions, and their social awareness. It shows that awareness of shared characteristics was an important first step for these young people in becoming part of a social group. The prevalent social categories identified as important by the youths included age, race, ethnicity, and gender. The chapter also considers the impact of discrimination on youth activism, along with the issues important to Chicago's young people and the ways in which they engaged with such issues, including immigration and the electoral process, and their political ideas with respect to topics like democracy and the place of the United States in the world.

Background. The literature on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is contradictory regarding the impact of weight status on CRC screening. This study was intended to determine if CRC screening rates among 2005 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) respondent racial/ethnic and gender subgroups were influenced by weight status.Methods. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine if CRC screening use differed significantly among obese, overweight, and normal-weight individuals in race/ethnic and gender subgroups.Results. Multivariable analyses showed that CRC screening rates did not differ significantly for individuals within these subgroups who were obese or overweight as compared to their normal-weight peers.Conclusion. Weight status does not contribute to disparities in CRC screening in race/ethnicity and gender subgroups.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to primarily focus on labor in maintenance areas, addressing human rights issues, labor standards and safety standards. The main issue is to investigate how these factors are considered to drive the prioritization of maintenance interventions within maintenance plans. In particular, a method for criticality analysis of production equipment is proposed considering specific labor issues like age and gender, which can be useful to steer maintenance plans toward a more social perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The authors focus on the two main social issues of SA 8000 norms, age and gender, exploring how these issues may drive the selection of maintenance policies and the relative maintenance plans. The research is conducted through fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) implemented within a failure mode effects analysis (FMEA). Findings – The research is conducted through fuzzy AHP implemented within a FMEA. The maintenance plans resulting from the FMEA driven by social issues are evaluated by a benchmark of three different scenarios. The results obtained allowed the firm to evaluate maintenance plans, considering the impact on workers’ health and safety, the environment, social issues like gender and age. Research limitations/implications – One of the main limitation of this research is that it should also encompass maintenance costs under social and safety perspective. The method developed should be extended by further study of maintenance planning decisions subject to budget constraints. Moreover, it would be worth evaluating the effect of adopting more proactive maintenance policies aimed at improving plant maintainability in view of what emerged during the test case in the presence of an aged workforce and the subsequent need to prevent and/or protect people from hidden risks. Practical implications – With reference to the results obtained from the two models of this scenario, the authors observed an increase of equipment criticality, from B class to the A class, and similarly from C class to B class. No equipment has reduced its criticality. This depends on the particular context and the relative weights of drivers indicated in its AHP matrixes. Social implications – The paper addressed the main social implication as well as other social issues represented by age and gender factors, which are normally neglected. The Action Research (AR) proved the effects resulted from considering either gender factor or gender and age factors at the same time for maintenance policy selection. All in all, an increase of criticality is evident even if “people” is a driver with less importance than “environment” and “structures.” Originality/value – The present work focussed on a new definition of a criticality ranking model to assign a maintenance policy to each component based on workers’ know-how and on their status. The approach is conceived by the application of a fuzzy logic structure and AHP to overcome uncertainties, which can rise during a decision process when there is a need to evaluate many criteria, ranging from economic to environmental and social dimensions.
