Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de las intervenciones educativas en el conocimiento y la aplicabilidad de la electrocirugía del equipo de enfermería.Material y método: Cuasiexperimento, con evaluaciones antes y después en un solo grupo, llevado a cabo en el centro quirúrgico de un hospital universitario terciario brasileño. Se realizó en siete etapas, se aplicó un cuestionario semiestructurado para evaluar los conocimientos de los participantes. Los participantes fueron expuestos a dos intervenciones educativas (clase expositiva, dialogada y video clase) y después de cada intervención se evaluó la retención de conocimientos. También se evaluaron indicadores de la aplicación de la unidad de electrocirugía durante los procedimientos quirúrgicos.Resultados: Participaron del estudio 4 enfermeros y 28 técnicos en enfermería. Los enfermeros tenían conocimientos previos sobre el tema de la mayor parte de los tópicos. Los técnicos en enfermería, mejoraron en los ítems verificación del equipamiento y colocación de la placa. Conclusiones: Los profesionales presentaron un buen desempeño teórico pero el mismo no se refleja en la práctica porque los profesionales son reacios a realizar prácticas que no coincidan con la teoría. La realización de este tipo de investigaciones es conveniente porque les permite a los gestores la posibilidad de proponer proyectos para una mejora continua de la asistencia perioperatoria. Objective: To evaluate the effect of educational interventions on the Nursing team's knowledge and applicability of electrosurgery.Material and Method: A quasi-experiment, with pre- and post-tests in a single group developed in the operating room of a Brazilian tertiary-level university hospital. It was developed in seven stages, with the application of a semi-structured questionnaire to assess the participants' knowledge. The participants were exposed to two educational interventions (lecture, dialogue and video-lesson) and, after each intervention, they were evaluated for knowledge retention. Indicators of the application of the electrosurgery unit during surgical procedures were also evaluated.Results: Four nurses and 28 nursing technicians participated in the study. The nurses had prior knowledge of the theme on most of the topics. Among the nursing technicians, there was an improvement in the “equipment check” and “electrodispersive plate positioning” items. Conclusions: The professionals presented good theoretical performance but the same is not evidenced in the practice because they are reluctant to having a practice different from the theory. Research of this nature is timely because it provides managers with a possibility to propose projects for continuous improvement of perioperative assistance. Entre os técnicos de enfermagem, observou-se melhora nos itens checagem do equipamento e posicionamento da placa eletrodispersiva. Conclusões: Os profissionais apresentaram um bom rendimento teórico, porém o mesmo não fica evidente na prática pois os profissionais relutam em ter uma prática diferente da teoria. Pesquisas dessa natureza são oportunas pois proporcionam aos gestores uma possibilidade de propor projetos de melhoria contínua da assistência perioperatória.

Background: Children are the precious gift from the Almightily Allah and breast milk is an ideal product given to the human being by nature to fulfill all requirements of the offspring until they are matured enough to take adult food. Objective: To assess the services provided for lactating mothers at lactation management centre in selected tertiary level hospitals. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted among 100 Lactating mothers who were selected conveniently and were interviewed by pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire and an observational checklist. Collected data were processed and analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science) software. Results: Lactation management centre (LMC) is supervised by a consultant and separate room is allotted in both out-patient and in-patient departments. Mothers came with lactation problems were more likely in the first month of the baby (73%) and feeling of not enough milk production was common (49%).Highly significant relationship was found between breast problems of lactating mother and age of child (p<0.001). About 84% respondents received practical demonstration on position and attachment of the baby during lactation. About 91% respondents got dietary advice for enough breast milk production, 75% got dietary advice regarding their child’s weaning food chart and69% got health education. Maximum mothers were informed about LMC by doctor & nurse (82%). Conclusion: Information about LMC services should be disseminated across the country. Lactating mothers should be familiarized with LMC and public awareness should be enhanced for effective management of breastfeeding problem to promote, protect and support the breastfeeding. Objective: The authors assessed whether anesthesia residents who acted as a scenario creators would have better knowledge retention than their juniors 90 days after participating in a simulation-based anesthetists’ non-technical skills (ANTS) workshop. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study via simulation ANTS workshop was conducted at a university hospital in southern Thailand in November 2017. Seven third-year post-graduate (PGY-3) residents volunteered as scenario creators, while the remaining anesthesia residents were randomly selected to participate in or observe three case scenarios, which were cardiac arrest, hypotension, and difficult ventilation. Resident’s knowledge was assessed before, immediately after, and 90 days after the workshop using a 20-item multiple-choice questionnaire. Predictors of change in knowledge scores were analyzed using multivariate linear regression analysis and presented as beta coefficient (β) and 95% confidence limits (CL). Results: Twenty-four anesthesia residents were recruited in the present study and included eight PGY-1, seven PGY-2, and nine PGY-3. The roles consisted of seven scenario creators, seven participants, and 10 observers. The overall immediate post-test and 90-day post-test scores increased significantly compared to the pre-test scores with a mean of 15.5 and 13.2 versus 11.7 (p<0.001 and p=0.007, respectively). The predictors of change in 90-day scores were PGY-3 versus PGY-1 (β 95% CL 4.0 [0.5 to 7.6], p=0.039), and role of participants and observers versus scenario creator (β 95% CL 5.5 [2.2 to 8.8] and 6.7 [2.8 to 10.6], p=0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Anesthesia residents who were participants or observers could improve their knowledge 90 days after a simulation-based ANTS workshop without necessarily being a scenario creator. BACKGROUND Medical students’ involvement in patients’ care varies due to patient’s willingness, as some consider it as an invasion of their privacy and exposure of their disease status. Thus, exploring patients' perceptions and attitudes towards this interaction should be thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVE To better understand the attitude of Jordanian patients towards the presence of medical students’ during their consultations and provide evidence-based data to improve the training of future doctors. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Jordan University Hospital using a structured questionnaire to interview 420 patients from the out-patients’ clinics of the departments; Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Surgery. Descriptive and multivariate data analysis was conducted using SPSS (version 25.0). RESULTS Of the patients interviewed, 94% were aware that they were in a teaching hospital, 92% approved the existence of medical students’ during their consultation and 80% accepted to be observed and examined by medical student in the presence of a senior doctor. Almost 83% of the patients believed that their consent should be obtained first and 58% of them indicated that the students asked for consent prior to interacting with them. Around 64% of the participants indicated that the maximum acceptable number of students during the consultation should not exceed 2-3, 64% had no preferred gender to interact with and 59% had no preferred training year. CONCLUSIONS Patients showed an overall positive stance towards the involvement of medical students’ in their healthcare. The majority were delighted to see medical students’ while some expressed concerns over their privacy due to the large number of students and because some do not ask for their consent. It is essential to apply medical ethics practices together with patient centered approach.

This article discusses the rights of patients who are attending hospital for the most common laboratory examinations and who may also be taking part in research studies. A distinction is made between five kinds of rights to: protection of privacy, physical integrity, mental integrity, information and self-determination. The data were collected ( n = 204) by means of a structured questionnaire specifically developed for this study in the clinical chemistry, haematological, physiological and neurophysiological laboratories of one randomly selected university hospital in Finland. The analysis of the data was statistical. On the whole, patients’ rights were realized reasonably well. This was most particularly the case with protection of privacy, as well as with the rights of physical and mental integrity. The rights to information and self-determination were less well realized. There are various steps that health care professionals and organizations can take to make sure that patients can enjoy their full rights, by counselling the patient, by giving opportunities to plan the examinations in advance, and by arranging a sufficient number of small examination rooms.

Objetivo: Caracterizar o perfil e o acesso à insulinoterapia dos usuários com diagnóstico de Diabetes Melittus atendidos no Ambulatório de Endocrinologia de um hospital universitário do Distrito Federal. Método: Estudo transversal, realizado de abril a maio de 2019. A amostra constituiu-se de 60 participantes com 18 anos ou mais. Foi aplicado questionário estruturado e os dados descritivos analisados pelo software PSPP. Resultados: Verificou-se que a maioria (86,7%) são mulheres, que os participantes obtêm insulina (93,3%), antidiabéticos orais (50,0%) e insumos (93,3%) no serviço público, e que metade desses participantes os adquirem na unidade de saúde. Ainda metade (53,3%) relatou ter interrompido o tratamento devido à falta desses medicamentos. Conclusão: O estudo evidenciou as fragilidades no acesso às redes de saúde do Distrito Federal em decorrência da falta de investimentos na Atenção Básica e da cultura hegemônica, sendo urgente o investimento nas redes de cuidado à luz das políticas de acesso.Descritores: Acesso aos Serviços de Saúde; Diabetes mellitus; Níveis de Atenção à Saúde; Assistência Integral à Saúde. Objective: To characterize the profile and access to insulin therapy of users with diabetes mellitus treated in the Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic in an university hospital of Distrito Federal. Method: Cross-sectional study, performed from April to May 2019. The sample consisted of 60 participants with 18 years or more. A structured questionnaire was applied and the descriptive data analyzed by the PSPP software. Results: It was found that the majority (86.7%) were women, that participants obtain insulin (93.3%), oral antidiabetics (50.0%) and inputs (93.3%) in the public service, and that half of these participants acquire it at the health unit. ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the knowledge and adherence of nurses to the standard precautions in critical care units. Method: descriptive and cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, with the population of nurses from a university hospital in the Distrito Federal, Brazil. For data collection, three instruments were used. A semi-structured questionnaire with identification and occupational data of nurses, the questionnaire to evaluate knowledge to standard precautions and the Questionnaire of adherence to standard precautions. Descriptive analysis was used with absolute and relative frequency values. Results: the population was composed of 40 participating nurses, 75% were female, with an average age of 32.5 years, ranging from 24 to 50 years. Professionals with five or more years of training (67.5%) predominated, 25 (62.5%) had only one job and had experience in the area of critical patient care for more than three years. Although with a high percentage of accuracy, with regard to the moments that required hand hygiene, this frequency was 97.5%. Gloves are always used for intramuscular or subcutaneous injection by 67.5% of professionals, but 17.5% still consider it unnecessary to wear disposable caps and surgical shoe covers. The use of sharps, handling and reporting of occupational accidents were not performed as expected. Conclusion: gaps were identified in relation to the knowledge and adherence of nurses in units that provide care to critical patients of a university hospital with regard to standard precautions.

The aim of the study was to explore the factors associated with the recall of basic medical physiology knowledge among medical interns and to determine the level of retained basic science knowledge. Two hundred and four interns, 114 women and 90 men, working in two major tertiary medical care centers, King Fahad Medical City (KFMC; 29 students) and King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH; 117 students), in Riyadh city, participated in the study. An anonymous knowledge test with 10 validated multiple-choice questions was developed specifically for this purpose. One hundred and forty-six interns (117 working at KKUH and 29 at KFMC) had graduated from medical schools adopting a conventional instructional system, whereas 58 (3 from KKUH and 55 from KFMC had graduated from schools adopting an integrated system (hybrid problem-based learning). Fifty-two students (26%) gained a score ≥60%, whereas 152 students (74%) obtained <60% of the score. Higher scores were associated with younger age ( P < 0.01), traditional curriculum ( P < 0.001), interns from KKUH ( P < 0.001), and candidates for postgraduate studies ( P < 0.02). There was no significant association between recall of physiology knowledge and all other variables studied, including sex. Multivariate analyses show that age and traditional curriculum are the only significant predictors of knowledge retention. Almost three-fourths of the interns scored <60%, and higher scores were significantly associated with younger interns, traditional curriculum, working in KKUH, and interns preparing for graduate studies. However, the difference between the two curricula disappears when the influence of hospital training is considered.
