This practical study is concerned with flows of attention and distraction that are associated with experiences of the internet. Taking the term ‘internet’ to stand for a range of networked social, media-consumption, and data practices carried out on devices such as smartphones, this study sets out to explore how distraction might arise, how it might be conceptualised, and the potential consequences for agency of the conditions of its emergence. The study is led by the production and analysis of artworks, using practical approaches that engage critically with aspects of the experience of the internet. This thesis begins by exploring conceptions of the ‘attention economy’ articulated by Goldhaber (1997), Beller (2006), and Citton (2017), developing an understanding that counters mainstream deterministic positions regarding the impact of digital technologies on the capacity for focused attention. Distraction is considered as an experience that may be sought out by individuals but can be captured and extended by third parties such as social media platforms. The importance of the data generated by habitual or compulsive engagement with internet-enabled devices and services (Zuboff, 2015) is considered against a backdrop of quantification and managerialism that extends beyond experiences of the internet. The study reviews existing artworks made in response to these concerns, focusing on expressions of the ‘attention economy’ prevalent in ‘postinternet’ art. Works by Vierkant (2010), Roth (2015) and others that interrogate infrastructure, data-gathering, or networked methods of distribution are identified as relevant, and a position is developed from which the consequences of metricised display platforms for an artistic ‘attention economy’ can be explored. Prototype artworks made during the study are appraised using an artistic research methodology that foregrounds the role of the researcher as both producer and reader of the artwork. Works that actively create distraction, that gather and visualise data, and that emphasise calm self-interrogation, are discussed and evaluated. The practical aspects of the research contribute to knowledge by extending understanding of the spatial, infrastructural, and algorithmic dimensions of the relationship between distraction and agency.

BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, which can be affected by stress. Living with psoriasis can trigger negative emotions, which may influence quality of life. OBJECTIVE This study explored the experiences of people with psoriasis with attention to the potential role of anger in the onset and progression of the chronic skin condition. METHODS Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with twelve participants (n=5 females, n=7 males) recruited online from an advert on a patient charity’s social media platforms. Data were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Four key themes were identified: (1) ‘I get really angry with the whole situation:’ anger at the self and others, (2) the impact of anger on psoriasis: angry skin, (3) shared experiences of distress, and (4) moving past anger to affirmation. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that anger can have a perceived impact on psoriasis through contributing to sensory symptoms and unhelpful coping cycles and point to a need for enhanced treatment with more psychological support. The findings also highlight the continued stigma which exists for people living with skin conditions and how this may contribute to, and sustain, anger for those individuals. Future research could usefully focus on developing targeted psychosocial interventions to promote healthy emotional coping with psoriasis.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting stay-at-home orders have disrupted all aspects of life globally, most notably our relationship with the internet and social media platforms. People are online more than ever before, working and attending school from home and socializing with friends and family via video conferencing. Marketers and brands have been forced to adapt to a new normal and, as a result, have shifted their brand communication and marketing mix to digital approaches. Hence, this study aims to examine the shift of influencer marketing on Instagram during this period and the possible future implications. By employing an online survey for exploratory research, individuals answered questions addressing their perceptions about the impact of the pandemic, brands and influencers’ relationship, and the overall changes made in marketing strategy.

This chapter provides a better understanding of the impact that the Internet and mobile sports marketing are having on a business's ability to achieve customer engagement. To achieve this goal, the case of Real Madrid football team is analyzed, as it is calculated to have over 200 million supporters worldwide. Information about Real Madrid was gathered from September 2012 to March 2013 by repeatedly browsing the team's Website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and apps. Data from interviews of Real Madrid's marketing department published in business press and posts was also compiled. Additionally, a focus group was conducted to discuss the customer engagement of Real Madrid's fans. The findings offer new opportunities to get customer engagement. They also highlight the important role of social media to gain insight about the fans.

New opportunities and challenges are emerging thanks to the growing Internet importance and social media usage. Although practitioners have already recognized the strategic dimension of e-reputation and the power of social media, academic research is still in its infancy when it comes to e-reputation determinants in a social networks context. A study was conducted in the sports setting to explore the impact of social networks on the sportspeople's e-reputation. Whereas the study emphasized (1) the influence of social networks' perception on the sportspeople's e-reputation, and the neutral roles of (2) the motives for following sportspeople online, and (3) the negative content on the Internet, additional insights are formulated on maintaining, restoring and managing e-reputation on social networks. Finally, future research directions are suggested on the role of image to control e-reputation.

This chapter discusses the role of social media in the uprisings of the Arab world. It argues that the seemingly democratizing impact of online activism is not due to the inherent nature of social media as a tool for democracy but rather an outcome of the equilibrium of forces that shaped the use of social media platforms by all three main players. Activists, governments, and social media firms formed a triangle of powers that influenced the use of social media during the Arab movements. In a different context, the outcome of such power balance can arguably inhibit citizens' rights and empower governments. To this end, the chapter first explores the use of social media platforms from the perspective of activists, governments, and social media firms, then presents a framework to understand the impact of all three in shaping the use of social media during the uprisings. The chapter then concludes that the projections of the role of social media on other movements in the world must not be made without understanding the underlying complexities and dynamics of these movements.

Purpose Today with the internet expansion, social media has also been identified as a factor in evolutions. Social media is the title used to refer to the set of sites and tools that have been born and developed in the space created by modern media such as communication networks, the internet and mobile phones. The effects of emerging phenomena, such as social media on human health, especially mental health, are important. As the effects of social media on users mental health is unclear, and the evidence in this field is contradictory, this study aims to determine the role of social media on mental health. Design/methodology/approach The current study was a review conducted in 2020. According to keywords, an extensive search was conducted on Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Magiran and SID databases. In total, 501 articles were obtained. The articles were screened in three stages. Finally, out of 501 evaluated articles, 50 cases were carefully assessed and included in the study. Findings The findings showed that social media has negative and positive effects on mental health. Negative effects included anxiety, depression, loneliness, poor sleep quality, poor mental health indicators, thoughts of self-harm and suicide, increased levels of psychological distress, cyber bullying, body image dissatisfaction, fear of missing out and decreased life satisfaction. Positive effects included accessing other people’s health experiences and expert health information, managing depression, emotional support and community building, expanding and strengthening offline networks and interactions, self-expression and self-identity, establish and maintain relationships. Originality/value The impact of social media on mental health can be considered as a double-edged sword. The important thing is to be able to reduce the negative effects of social media on mental health and turn it into an opportunity by implementing appropriate strategies and actions and to increase and strengthen the positive effects.

The concept of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) was introduced in the mid-1990s, when the Internet was beginning to change the ways consumers interacted with each other. eWOM can be generally defined as consumers’ information sharing and exchange about a product or company via the Internet, social media, and mobile communication. eWOM has been recognized to lead to high retransmission intentions because it is easy for consumers to generate conversations online. It also allows information to be passed along globally and quickly. Because of the impact of eWOM on consumer behavior, academic research on eWOM has been documented in disciplines such as advertising, marketing, communication, management, and electronic commerce. Over the past few decades, research has demonstrated the impact of eWOM on sales, product evaluations, purchase decisions, customer satisfaction and loyalty, and consumer-brand relationships. Research has also examined antecedents and motives of eWOM. Factors such as consumers’ desire for social interaction, desire for economic incentives, concern for other consumers, and the potential approval utility have been identified as important motives that drive consumers’ eWOM behavior. In addition, individuals’ social relationship factors (e.g., social capital), as well as message source and characteristics, are antecedents that lead to eWOM behavior. In this article, eWOM is considered in many different formats, such as product review sites, emails, discussion boards, user-generated content, social media, and online communities. This article begins with citations concerning the Role of eWOM in Advertising, Communication, and Marketing. Next, Special Journal Issues on eWOM and Overview Articles are presented. Finally, key research areas are highlighted: Social Media–Based eWOM and Purchase Intentions; the Role of Influencers as a new source of eWOM; the impact of eWOM on Corporate Reputation and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); and Cross-Cultural Differences in eWOM. These areas together explain the antecedents and consequences of eWOM.

Social media use is essential for success in today's television news industry. Broadcast journalists use social media platforms to gather and disseminate news in more efficient ways. Broadcasters are also using social media to engage with news consumers in innovative ways. This study employs a mixed-method approach to better understand how social media impacts broadcast journalists’ routines and values and explores the role of gender in broadcasters’ social media strategies. Qualitative in-depth interviews with top broadcast journalists and a social media discourse analysis of their Twitter pages produces this study's findings. Findings suggest that in many television newsrooms social media have become more important than traditional platforms like evening newscasts, and social media metrics are being used to gauge journalists’ success. Additionally, women broadcasters are disadvantaged by the current social media practices in many newsrooms. Implications are discussed.

Although juror misconduct has always been a concern, the prevalence of technology available to jurors has increased the ease with which jurors can improperly communicate with others, publish information regarding the trial, and conduct outside research on the case. This chapter discusses the role of the Internet and social media in the courtroom and how access to this information in the form of midtrial publicity might impact juror decision-making. Additionally, it discusses steps that have been taken by courts around the United States to address the issue of Internet use by jurors as well as recommendations to limit the impact of the Internet and social media on juror decision-making.
