Abstract: The following text is a personal reflection from my professional experience as a researcher in arte history and art criticism, as well as from my teaching work in art schools at undergraduate and graduate levels. That allows me to think about how the art theory, art history and practice of art necessarily coincide. It is argued, in general, that the notion of contemporary art, rather than a style or a fad, is a space for experimentation that can be used in art schools as a place to think about how it is perceived the immediate reality and how it is that you can single out certain experiences in a unique way, very differently from any other discipline or practice. In that sense, and contrary to what could be expected by the regulations and traditions that predetermine it, the academic space becomes a place where the practice of art can escape the institutionality of the global art world and of certain ways of doing that have become easily understandable codes. Thus, the notion of contemporary art incorporated into the school could even question the very foundations of artistic knowledge allowing certain mobility of the subjects, as well as of the practices. INTERVIEW WITH ROLANDO VÁSQUEZ ABSTRACT We have to hink the decoloniality in relation with the arts. This interview explores the difference between the modern/colonial aesthetic and the decolonial arts. The aesthetic decolonization leads to the release of the aesthesis, ergo it relates in every way to the connection and creation of a world through the senses. The decolonial aesthesis is particularly different from the contemporary art principles in the way it grasps the modern temporality consenting the creation of a path toward relational temporalities. The decolonial artists exercise a different temporality that results in not only a radical criticism to the modern representation and visuality but it makes possible to understand the decolonialization as a hopeful movement, full of possibilities for naming and experiencing neglected intercultural worlds. KEYWORDS Decolonialization, relational time, hope, body, interculturality ESTEHÉSIE DÉCOLONIALE ET LE TEMPS RELATIONNELS.

Palabras clave: Fondazione Prada, Miuccia Prada, Rem Koolhaas, museografía moderna, cultura contemporánea, arte contemporáneo   AbstractThe Fondazione Prada in Milan, Italy, is a paradigm and an example of modern patronage. Palabras clave: Alejandro González Trujillo, Apu-Rimak, Yolanda Bedregal, Cusco, La Paz, arte contemporáneo, enseñanza artística, indoamericanismo, Siglo XX AbstractFrom a wide range of letters, hitherto unpublished, by the Peruvian artist Alejandro González Trujillo, andsent to the young Bolivian writer Yolanda Bedregal 1934 and 1936, we have extracted various reflections that give us the possibility of composing a kind of artistic manifesto by the painter. The letters allow us to recreate that Cusco period of González Trujillo, his life, his efforts, and his works in artistic and patrimonial journeys through the south of Peru while evoking his discipline training in life and art, as well as his profound vocation as an educator. His thoughts reveal an unwavering commitment to pre-Hispanic Peruvian culture, his art, and his position within the tensions of the Peruvian artistic field of those years. It also shows the fervor with which Peruvian artists approached the immeasurable task of cataloging their ancestors’ legacy. This essay argues that curating brought back a kind of leverage that redressed the otherwise imbalanced relationship between aesthetics and ethics. Curating lends out to art its innocent and aspirational belief in such a balance because the ethical concerns in art theory and art criticism have long been toned down while form was prioritized over content. Ever since the curatorial profession created its own niche in the art world—started, for example, in the West, in the late 1960s with curators such as Siegelaub, Szeemann, or Lippard—curating began to mediate this relationship, thus helping to activate the catalyst potential of art without having to compromise its formal aspects. More specifically, this essay explores the ways in which theories and practices of curating brought back to mind the ancient Greek notion of kalokagathia, the intertwinement of aesthetics and ethics and, with it, other ethical responsibilities, principles, and values that art forgot to address while giving privilege to its formal aspects.

With reference to a number of contemporary cases, such as that surrounding the Guggenheim’s Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World exhibition, this chapter argues that some important controversies about the ethics of art can be explained in terms of a disconnect between people who tacitly adopt the perspectivist (or another interpretation-oriented) approach to ethical criticism and people who tacitly adopt a production-oriented approach to ethical criticism. The chapter argues that perspectivism tends to be favored not only in philosophical aesthetics, but also in art criticism and in many art world institutions. In contrast, non-specialists tend to tacitly adopt the production-oriented approach. In the case of the use of animals in contemporary art, current controversies are further explained by the fact that, given some fairly uncontroversial premises about the moral respect that we owe to non-human animals, people who evaluate such work from a production-oriented approach are likely to find much that is prima facie ethically blameworthy. Moreover, they are rationally warranted in doing so.

This paper begins to establish an ‘aesthetic of the unknown’ by drawing together theorists and approaches from mainstream art criticism to provide a starting-point for an aesthetic sympathetic with Jungian perspectives, in an attempt to bridge a gap between contemporary abstract painting, contemporary art theory, and Jungian studies. This is a framework for approaching abstract painting not as an object awaiting interpretation or ‘reading’, but rather as something that offers a numinous experience (or experience of the unknown), which can be thought about but may remain ultimately unknowable and irreducible. Such experience – involving both the unconscious and conscious mind – would provide glimpses of forms of meaning not accessible to full rational exposition. This type of unconsciously understood meaning is explored, acknowledging that there is a need to preserve this encounter with the unknown and a need for a contemporary critical, theoretical framework that recognises the importance of this within abstract painting.

In this paper, I seek to extend our understanding of global art markets by focusing on the relationships between different art world agents and their perceived responsibilities and roles in a market considered locally ‘incipient’ and emergent on the global scene. For this purpose, I draw on over 50 interviews with art gallerists, independent art spaces and visual artists represented by them, living in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the two largest clusters of the contemporary art market in Brazil, at a time of market expansion and internationalisation. In an incipient market, two main functions are considered important: Developing the commercial circuit and opening up the market, and; enhancing the value of art in society. Such functions occur against the backdrop of a large and complex country, where the ‘eixo’ (axis) of the main cities offers greater opportunities for visibility and valorization. The findings help to elucidate the perceptions of responsibility and roles in a context of market development, as well as the emerging boundaries between culture and the market. Moreover, the paper explores the emerging dynamics and strategies of art world development as they are enacted, offering insights into how art market actors perceive their roles and responsibilities, as well as the strategies available to them to support market consolidation.

Palabras clave: Pintura, narración, literatura, comunicación, bellas artes, arte contemporáneo Abstract: This article revolves around the constructive process of contemporary pictorial communication in Joan Millet’s production (Gandia, 1958). Thus, it addresses different issues that become essential for the configuration of his discourse, such as the original narrative intention, the semiotic structure of the image, or the expressive value of the subject itself. Understanding the conjunction between the narrative and the sensitive is paramount to the comprehension of the artist’s intention, as he always articulates his images meticulously, attending and using any compositional, literary, or experiential resource in his reach. Emphasis is placed on the position of the potential viewer in the communicative exchange that the artist begins with his work, hence being the receiver the one on whom the eventual jump to the symbolic level depends.
