Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMC) reinforced montmorillonite (MMT) was performed using cationic surfactant , Artificial Aging and stir casting method. The content of MMT as a filler is 3%wt. Characterization were performed using Xray Difractometer, ultrasonic testing, SEM, and Hardness Vickers. The results show increase in crystallographic parameter, decrease in density, shiffting in XRD pattern and increase in hardness. Keywords: metal, composite, matrix, aluminum, AMC, MMC, organoclay, heat treatment MMT, artificial aging, stir casting, automotive

The effects of graphite and magnesium (Mg) addition on mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) have been investigated in this work. Aluminum alloy (ADC-12) was combined with graphite and Mg produced by stir casting. The effect of addition of graphite into the matrix has been studied with variation 2, 4 and 6 wt-% for each composite. The addition of Mg as wetting agent was introduced wit 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 wt-% to promote wettability between ADC-12 and graphite. All composites were characterized both microstructures analysis and mechanical properties include tensile strength and hardness. The higher reinforcement content, the higher porosity formed, due to the tendency of de-wetting as well as particles agglomeration. One of the main intermetallic phase present evenly in aluminum matrix is Mg2Si. The addition of magnesium in the material that will form Mg2Si primary phases which have a high hardness value of these composites.

This work was carried out to investigate the effect of carbonized eggshells (CES) and fly ash on the microstructure, mechanical properties, wear, and corrosion characteristics of Al-Si12. The weight fraction (wt.%) of the CES particles was kept constant at 2.5 wt.%, while that of fly ash was varied at 2.5 wt.%, 5.0 wt.%, 7.5 wt.%, and 10.0 wt.%. The selected fabrication route was stir casting. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the cast aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) revealed the presence of phases including α-aluminum, SiO2, and Si with the formation of the intermetallic CuAl2 phase. The microhardness of the cast samples increased with increasing weight fraction of the reinforcements up to the 7.5 wt.% fly ash sample. The tensile strength and compressive strength were highest for the 2.5 wt.%/CES 2.5 wt.%. Tribology studies showed that the lowest wear rate of 4.91 × 10-5 mm3/Nmm was obtained for the 2.5 wt.% fly ash sample, while the corrosion studies showed that the corrosion rate of 2.70 × 10-5 g/hr was lowest for the 2.5 wt.% fly ash as well.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

Driven by the increasing requirements from aircraft producers, aluminium alloy matrix composites with carbon fiber reinforcement have been largely used in the modern industry. The method of traditional preparation of carbon fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites is not only high cost and complex to produce but also difficult to apply in the civilian. The present paper focuses on exploratory study on the preparation of carbon-fiber- reinforced aluminum composites, the intensifying material is continuous long carbon fiber. In order to avoid any interfacial reactions in the carbon fiber reinforced composites, the carbon fibers were coated with copper. We made The tensile samples were made by using the mould, the tensile properties determined, the strengthening mechanism studied, and the carbon fiber in the matrix observed with the microscope.

In this study, 7075 aluminum matrix composites reinforced with 1.5 wt.% nanosized Al2O3 were fabricated by ultrasonic vibration. The effect of T6 heat treatment on both microstructure and hardness of nanosized Al2O3 reinforced 7075 (Al2O3np/7075) composites were studied via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and hardness tests. The Mg(Zn,Cu,Al)2 phases gradually dissolved into the matrix under solution treatment at 480 °C for 5 h. However, the morphology and size of Al7Cu2Fe phases remained unchanged due to their high melting points. Furthermore, the slenderness strips MgZn2 phases precipitated under aging treatment at 120 °C for 24 h. Compared to as-cast composites, the hardness of the sample under T6 heat treatment was increased ~52%. The strengthening mechanisms underlying the achieved hardness of composites are revealed.

This paper deals with the mechanical properties in conventional heat treatment of Al (6061)-B4C-Graphite. Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) is fabricated through two step stir casting method. The composites were fabricated with various volume percentage levels as Aluminium reinforced with (5, 10 &15%) Boron Carbide and (5,10 & 15%) of Graphite. Fabricated composites were subjected to conventional heat treatment for enhancing the mechanical properties. Influences of Graphite reinforcement on mechanical properties of Aluminum-Boron carbide composites were analyzed. The microstructure studies were also carried out. It is observed that increasing the graphite content within the aluminum matrix results in significant decrease in ductility, hardness, ultimate tensile strength. The addition of boron carbide conversely increased the hardness of the composites.
