Text messaging or texting is economical and fastest means of exchanging written messages, hence, become popular and affordable to students. Its limited characters make texters follow a system of texting called “textese” as to its effects to users. This study examined the relationship between the perceived effects of texting and the spelling skills of the high school students in Misamis University. The results show that the students are highly aware of the positive and negative effects of texting. The students have a good level of spelling skills despite being avid texters. The study failed to gather evidences to associate the perceived effects of texting and the spelling skills of the students. However, students revealed that texting disturbs their study time, and they use texting in classroom cheating. The study calls for a regulation on the use of mobile phones during classes as this could be used by the students in academic dishonesty. Keywords – Texting, Cellular Phone, Texters and Textese, Perceived Effects, Spelling Skills, Descriptive-Correlational Study

The duration of study for Credit Semester System or Sistem Kredit Semester (SKS) students is 2 years at the earliest and 4 years at the longest. This condition can cause students to commit academic dishonesty for fear of failing to get good scores. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between fear of failure and academic dishonesty in high school students who run in the SKS format using correlational quantitative research methods. The sampling technique was purposive sampling. The research subjects are high school students who run the SKS for at least 1 year and the numbers are 186 subjects. The data collection method used a modified scale and a combination of the Academic Dishonesty Scale and the Academic Dishonesty Instrument and the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI) scale. The results of the data analysis test using the Pearson product moment method showed that there is no relationship between fear of failure and academic dishonesty in high school students who run the SKS. The correlation coefficient is 0.99 and the significance is 0.178 (p > 0.05).   Keywords: Academic dishonesty, fear of failure, high school students running the SKS

Academic dishonesty has become a global issue widely studied in many countries. Plagiarism using the Internet is prevalent across the world and seems to be increasing, affecting the reputation of schools and even countries. On the basis of the social cognitive theory and the theory of planned behavior, this study explored the relationship between ethical attitude and academic dishonesty, and we focused on the moderating effect of ethical climate on the relationship. A survey of 1271 students (745 female students, 526 male students; mean age = 16.38 years, SD = 0.76) from 31 senior high schools in Taiwan was conducted and analyzed using hierarchical regression by SPSS 26 to test the hypotheses of this study. The result shows that: (1) Compared with male students, female students had a more positive attitude towards ethical attitude and showed less academic dishonesty. Compared with general senior high school students, vocational senior high school students showed a more positive ethical attitude and a positive ethical climate; (2) ethical attitude was negatively related to academic dishonesty; (3) high ethical climate strengthened the negative relationship between ethical attitude and academic dishonesty. In addition, the theoretical implications, practical implications, and directions for future research are also discussed in this article. The result of the study can be a credible reference for educational researchers and educational administrative systems, when planning ethical-related courses or educational policies for high schools with more emphasis on academic dishonesty and other relevant issues.

Abstract. This study investigated the effects of politicians’ nonparticipatory and participatory Facebook posts on young people’s political efficacy – a key determinant of political participation. We employed an experimental design, using a sample of N = 125 high school students (15–20 years). Participants either saw a Facebook profile with no posts (control condition), nonparticipatory posts, or participatory posts. While nonparticipatory posts did not affect participants’ political efficacy, participatory posts exerted distinct effects. For those high in trait evaluations of the politician presented in the stimulus material or low in political cynicism, we found significant positive effects on external and collective efficacy. By contrast, for those low in trait evaluations or high in cynicism, we found significant negative effects on external and collective efficacy. We did not find any effects on internal efficacy. The importance of content-specific factors and individual predispositions in assessing the influence of social media use on participation is discussed.
