Aims: To investigate the direct and residual effect of boron application on yield and nutrient content under rice-wheat cropping system in middle Gangatic alluvial plan. Study Design: Completely random design (CRD). Place and Duration of Study: Net-house of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India during 2017-18. Methodology: The pot experiment was comprised with ten treatments among them eight for boron (ranges from 0.5 to 4.0 mg B kg-1) along with control and recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF). Rice (Oryza sativa L.) variety ARIZE 6444 was used as test crop and after harvesting of rice crop, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) variety HUW 468 was grown in the same pot without fresh application B. The yield data was recorded after harvesting of rice and wheat. The nutrient content in grain and straw and post-harvest soil properties were analyzed using standard protocol. Results: The maximum grain yield in rice (44.07 g pot-1) was recorded in T5 (RDF + 1.5 kg B ha-1), whereas in wheat (19.70 g pot-1) was observed in T8 (RDF + 3 kg B ha-1). The maximum straw yield in rice (24.35 g pot-1) was recorded in T5 (RDF+ 1.5 kg B ka-1), whereas in wheat (48.65 g pot-1) was in T8 (RDF + 3 kg B ha-1). Application of RDF along with 1.5 kg B ha-1 was recorded the maximum (48.99%) harvest index in rice, whereas its (B) residual effect in wheat crop was maximum in RDF + 2 kg B ha-1. Application of B @ 1.5 kg B ha-1 significantly enhanced the Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn content in rice grain, whereas residual effect of 3 kg ha-1 B application has significantly improved the Fe, Cu and Mn content in wheat grain. Conclusion: It was found that application of B did not increased grain yield of rice and wheat significantly over RDF. A significant residual effect of B application in rice was noticed even after the harvest of wheat crop particularly at highest doses of B application.

Continuous cropping of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) deplete soil fertility, reduced crop productivity, and grower’s income. Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies are considered important nutritional constraints under rice-wheat cropping system. One strategy to increase crop productivity and grower’s income under the rice-wheat system is the balanced application of P and Zn fertilizers. The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of sole and various combinations of P (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha−1) and Zn levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 kg ha−1) on productivity (grain yield and yield components) and profitability (net returns) of different rice genotypes (cultivars) (fine (cv.Bamati-385) vs. coarse (cv. Fakhre-e-Malakand and cv. Pukhraj)) and their residual effect on the income of the succeeding wheat crop (cv. Siran-2010). The results revealed that both rice and wheat productivity and profitability was higher with the combined application of both nutrients at higher rates (80 and 120 kg P ha−1 and 10 and 15 kg Zn ha−1). The highest productivity and profitability was obtained with the cultivation of hybrid rice “Pukhraj” (Pukhraj > Fakhre-e-Malakand > Basmati-385). It was concluded from this study that application of higher P and Zn levels and growing of hybrid rice increased productivity and profitability under the rice-wheat cropping system.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif and rabi seasons of 2015 and 2016 at farmer’s field of Banka District as an On Farm Trial to study the crop residues management with different crop establishment methods in rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping system. Treatment comprised two levels of crop residue management ie. residue removal and residue retention (33%) and three levels of crop establishment methods ie. (a) conventional puddled transplanted rice fb conventional-till wheat (PTR-CTW), two times ploughing with cultivator followed by two times puddling and one planking was done before the manual transplanting of 21 days old seedling at 20 cm spacing from row to row. After rice harvesting, wheat was sown by broadcasting in conventional tillage plots with two times harrowing with cultivator followed by one planking; (b) unpuddled transplanted rice fb zero-till wheat (UPTR-ZTW): two times ploughing with cultivator followed by planking, after that water is submerged for transplanting and wet tillage was avoided. 21 days old rice seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 20 x 15 cm. Wheat crop was sown under ZT using zero tillage machines; (c) zero-till direct-seeded rice fb zero-till wheat (ZTDSR-ZTW): direct-seeding of rice was done using zero-till seed-cum-fertilizer drill in ZT-flat plots at 20 cm row spacing. Wheat crop was sown in zero tillage using zero till machine. Rice variety (Rajendra Sweta) was sown directly by zero till in ZTDSR-ZT plots in the first fortnight of June. On the same date, rice seedlings for transplanting were raised in nursery by ‘Wet bed method’. Experiment was conducted in a split plot design which is replicated by thrice. Grain/panicle or spike, panicle or ear length and effective tillers/m2 recorded more in residue retention treatment and it was registered significantly superior with residue removal treatment under crop residue management in rice and wheat crop during both the years of experiment. Amongst crop establishment method, ZTDSR-ZTW was recorded more Grain/panicle or spike, panicle or ear length and effective tillers/m2 and it was significantly superior with UPTR-ZTW and PTR-CTW treatments under crop establishment methods in rice and wheat crop during both the years of experiment. Residues retention (33%) significantly improved the grain yield of both the component crops. For rice crop, 8.2–10.0% higher grain yield was realized with retention of crop residues. Grain and straw yield of rice were registered more in ZTDSR-ZTW (3.86-3.99 t/ha) & (5.56-5.75 t/ha) closely followed by UPTR-ZTW (4.38-4.45 t/ha). Concerning the data of residue management on economics revealed that the residue retention was recorded more gross return, net return as well as B: C ratio followed by residue removal treatment in both years of experimentation for rice and wheat crop and ZTDSR-ZTW was recorded more gross return, net return as well as B: C ratio followed by UPTR-ZTW and PTR-CTW treatments under crop establishment methods in rice and wheat crop during both the years of experiment.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of integrated nutrient management in scented rice and its residual effect on pea under paira cropping system at Regional Research and Technology Transfer Station (RRTTS), Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi, Odisha during 2015-16 and 2016-17. Twelve treatment combinations comprising of T1 - FYM @ 10 t ha-1 + vermicompost @ 2.5 t ha-1 + neem cake @ 2.5 q ha-1 + Azospirillum @ 5 kg ha-1 + PSM @ 5 kg ha-1, T2 - STBFR (Soil test based fertilizer recommendation 75 : 30 : 20 kg N:P2O5: K2O ha-1), T3 - STBFR + FYM @ 5 t ha-1, T4 - STBFR + Azospirillum @ 5 kg ha-1 + PSM @ 5 kg ha-1, T5 - STBFR + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1, T6- STBFR + S @ 20 kg ha-1, T7- STBFR + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1, T8- STBFR + FYM @ 5 t /ha + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1, T9 - STBFR + FYM @ 5 t ha-1 + Azospirillum @ 5 kg ha-1 + PSM @ 5 kg ha-1, T10 - STBFR + FYM @ 5 t ha-1 + Azospirillum @ 5kg ha-1+ PSM @ 5kg ha-1 + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1, T11 - Farmers practice (only chemical fertilizer @ 40 : 20 : 20 kg N : P2O5 : K2O ha-1), T12 - STBFR + vermicompost @ 2.5 t ha-1 were tried in RBD with three replications. The soil of the experimental site was black cotton type having pH- 6.11 , O.C.- 0.72 %, E.C- 0.004 (dS m-1), available N -175.9 kg ha-1 (low), available P-36.7 kg ha-1 (medium) and available K- 283.6 kg ha-1 (high). Geetanjali was the test variety for rice and Azad Pea-1 for pea. Application of STBFR (75 : 30 : 20 kg N : P2O5 : K2O ha-1) + FYM @ 5 t ha-1 + Azospirillum @ 5 kg ha-1 + PSM @ 5 kg ha-1 + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1 (T10) to medium duration aromatic rice (var. Geetanjali) produced higher rice grain yield (4065 kg ha-1) and pea seed yield (1044 kg ha-1) from aromatic rice -pea paira cropping system. However, application of STBFR + FYM @ 5 t ha-1 + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1 producing grain yield (3944 kg ha-1) and pea seed yield 977 kg ha-1 is another option. Application of STBFR (75 : 30 : 20 kg N : P2O5 : K2O ha-1) + FYM @ 5 t ha-1 + Azospirillum @ 5 kg ha-1 + PSM @ 5 kg ha-1 + Zn @ 5 kg ha-1 + S @ 20 kg ha-1 (T10) recorded maximum gross return (Rs. 1,26,991 ha-1) , net return (Rs. 80,146 ha-1) and B : C ratio of 2.71. The increase in rice equivalent yield (REY) in this treatment was 51.4% higher than the farmer practice i,e., application of chemical fertilizers alone (40 : 20 : 20 kg N : P2O5 : K2O ha-1).

A four year rice-wheat cropping (2012-15) was developed on Nursery Jhilli area of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar, where zinc applied in four different doses (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 kg ha-1) and 3 modes of application under rice – wheat cropping system, to investigate the effect of different doses of Zn and modes of application on rice growth parameters, yield and Zn use efficiency. Results reveled that among the different growth and yield attributing characteristics of rice the highest of number of tillers m-2, number of productive tillers m-2 and number of filled grain panicle-1 were observed in 7.5 kg Zn ha-1 at alternate year applied plot. Root weight were highest in 7.5 kg Zn ha-1 every year applied plot. The grain and straw yield data clearly indicated that application of zinc significantly increased both yields. The highest grain yield was found in 5 kg Zn ha-1 applied every year (40.20 q ha-1) and 7.5 kg Zn ha-1 in initial year application was the lowest dose for optimum rice grain yield in the fourth year. Highest Agronomic Efficiency was found in 7.5 kg Zn ha-1 (101.33 kg grain/ kg Zn) and the order of apparent Zn recovery efficiency was in the order of, 2.5 kg Zn, alternate year (3.72%) > 2.5 kg Zn, initial year (3.70%) > 7.5 kg Zn, every year (3.61%) > 2.5 kg Zn, every year (3.58%). A suitable dose (5 kg Zn ha-1) of Zn found more efficient in term of yield and recovery efficiency than high or low doses, this can be helpful to farming communities for better earning and reduce excessive application.

A series of on-farm fi eld experiments were conducted in two locations in Padang, Koto Panjang and Koto Tingga, West Sumatera, Indonesia in 2015. The purpose of the experiment was to establish the formula of organic fertilizer derived from Tithonia supplied with micro nutrients, Zn and Mn, on rice. The experiments were conducted using completely-randomized block design with six treatments and three replications. The treatments were P = Tithonia Organic Fertilizer Plus (TOFP) + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1, Q = TOFP + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+ 3.0 kg Zn.ha-1, R = TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1 + 6 kg Zn.ha-1, S= TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1+ 9 kg Zn.ha-1, T = TOFP only, U = 100% chemical fertilizer only. Treatment with micro nutrients as addition to TOFP (TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1 and TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+3.0 kg Zn.ha-1) increased rice grain yield by 80 g per clump.

The study was designed to asses the residual effect of organic N (Poultry Manure) and mineral N on maize crop in field experiments carried out on silty clay loam soil at NIFA, Tarnab, Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Pakistan during 2014-15. Combined dose of N from both sources were 120 kg ha-1 applied to wheat crop alone and in different combination making six treatments. Maize variety (Azam) was sown in Randomized complete block (RCB) design with four replications. Agronomic data, grains ear-1, 1000 grain weight, biomass grain yield data, N-uptake in maize grain and straw were recorded. Results showed that maximum grain ear−1, 1000 grain weight, biomass and grain yield was obtained from treatment where 25% N applied from poultry manure + 75% from mineral N source applied to previous wheat crop. Agronomic efficiency and nitrogen use efficiency were also found maximum in treatment where 75% poultry manure + 25% mineral N was applied. It was concluded from the study that residual effect of organic manure with mineral N in different ratios enhances crop productivity and soil fertility.

Study was aimed to determine the effect of mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP, NH4H2PO4) and K-Humate application on grain yield and grain phosphorus uptake efficiency which applied on Central Anatolian calcareous and basic reaction soil. The research was conducted at Bahri Dağdaş Agricultural Research Institute field in dry conditions during 2018 - 19 to determine the effect of phosphorus doses @ 0, 17.5 and 35.0 kg ha-1 and K-Humate @ 0 and 12 kg ha-1 on Bayraktar 2000 variety of bread wheat crop grain yield, agronomic (AE), physiological (PE) and apparent recovery (AR) phosphorus uptake efficiency. Results of the research revealed that increased phosphorus rate, enhances grain yield and amount of grain phosphorus uptake increase, while the grain AE, PE and AR were decreasing significantly. Additionally, with the K-Humate application with respect to control, the grain yield was positively affected in P0 and P17.5, while the grain phosphorus uptake amount was increased by 13%, in the P35 application the grain yield and the grain phosphorus uptake amount decreased by 9% and 5% respectively. In another direction, with the K-Humate application depending on control, in P17.5 application grain AE and AR were increased by 13% and 12% respectively, while grain PE decreased by 54%. Besides, with the K-Humate application according to control and in the P35 application grain AE, PE and AR were decreased by 66%, 51% and 40% respectively.

A number of alternative options to summerfallow are feasible on the Dark Brown soils of the Canadian prairies. These include recropping to cereal or pulse crops, as well as use of summerfallow substitute crops, such as legume green manures. The objective of this study was to evaluate these options for their impact on the productivity of subsequent crops. Green-manure lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.), incorporated at either the bud or full-bloom stage of growth, field pew (Pisum sativum L.), grain lentil, and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown as grain were compared with conventional summerfallow for their impact on yield of a succeeding wheat crop and of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown the year after wheat on a Dark Brown Chernozemic soil at Scott, Saskatchewan. During the 5-yr period, 1984–1988, above-ground dry-matter production of green-manure lentil averaged 500 kg ha−1 at the bud stage of growth but more than doubled to 3170 kg ha−1, by full bloom. Grain yield of field pea averaged 1470 kg ha−1, while that of grain lentil, unfertilized wheat, and N-fertilized wheat averaged 1220, 1290 and 1490 kg ha−1, respectively. Considerable year-to-year yield variation occurred with all crops, variability being greatest for lentil. Yield of wheat grown after lentil green manure was similar to yield of wheat on summerfallow (2340 kg ha−1) during each of the 5 yr for both early (2360 kg ha−1) and late (2250 kg ha−1) incorporation. Wheat yield after pea (2210 kg ha−1) or grain lentil (2080 kg ha−) was reduced in 1987, but it was equal to wheat yield after summerfallow during the remaining 4 yr. Yield of wheat on wheat stubble, whether fertilized with N (1830 kg ha−1) or not (1610 kg ha−1), was generally lower than on summerfallow. Yield of barley grown the following year was generally unaffected by summerfallow or summerfallow substitute treatments. The higher value and similar productivity of pea and grain lentil, compared with wheat, combined with their favourable impact on subsequent wheat yield, should make these crops attractive alternatives to summerfallow. On fields unsuited to pea or grain lentil production, lentil green manures may be a suitable alternative to summerfallow because they should reduce soil degradation, although lentil green manures leave little residue to protect against soil erosion where through incorporation is practised. Summerfallow or green manure incorporated early or late generally resulted in greater available soil water and N for a succeeding crop than did grain lentil, pea or wheat.
