Aim: To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of the methanolic extract of the fruit pulp of Hyphaene thebaica (Doum), a famous natural product in Sudan. Methods: Agar-well diffusion test and minimum inhibition diffusion test (MIC). Results: The investigation revealed that the extract showed no antifungal effect against Aspergillus niger ATCC 6275 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. While it exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA 1026 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145. Whereas, weak antibacterial activity was recorded with Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 and Escherichia coli ATCC 1637. Conclusion: The fruit pulp of Hyphaene thebaica (Doum) has good antibacterial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Accordingly, the consumption of this fruit would exert several beneficial effects by virtue of its antibacterial activity, and further studies using different bacterial strains and clinical pathogens are recommended.

ABSTRACT Artabotrys odoratissimus R.Br.  (Annonaceae) a medium sizes shrub with hooks, sweet smelling flowers and aggregate fruits, was tested for activity against gram negative bacteria. The fruit of the experimental plant was extracted with water, methanol and toluene: methanol (2:1 v/v). Artabotrys fruits showed good antibacterial activity and produced zone of inhibition of 32mm. The methanolic extract of the fruit showed maximum zone of inhibition at 300 ?g/ml against Pseudomonas fluorescens. The present study clearly indicates that A. odoratissimus had a profound antimicrobial   activity and it may be useful in the treatment of various infectious caused by bacteria. The methanolic extract of the resin of Shorea robusta was subjected to investigate its antioxidant and antibacterial properties its utility in free radical mediated diseases including diabetic, cardiovascular, cancer etc. The methanol extract of the resin was tested for antioxidant activity using scavenging activity of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) radical method, reducing power by FeCl3 and antibacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria using disc diffusion method. The phytochemical screening considered the presence of triterpenoids, tannins and flavoniods. Overall, the plant extract is a source of natural antioxidants which might be helpful in preventing the progress of various oxidative stress mediated diseases including aging. The half inhibition concentration (IC50) of resin extract of Shorea robusta and ascorbic acid were 35.60 µg/ml and 31.91 µg/ml respectively. The resin extract exhibit a significant dose dependent inhibition of DPPH activity. Antibacterial activity was observed against gram positive and gram negative bacteria in dose dependent manner.Key Words: Shorea robusta, antioxidant, antibacterial, Disc-diffusion, DPPH.

The present study was aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of some endemic plant species used in folkloric medicine by the inhabitants of Andaman Islands, India. The ethanol extracts prepared from the leaves of four plants viz; Alstonia kurzii, Tabernaemontana crispa, Mangifera andamanica and Vitex diversifolia were assessed for antibacterial activity against clinically isolated human pathogenic bacteria and antifungal activity against some phytopathogenic fungi. The ethanol extracts showed more inhibition towards Gram positive than Gram negative bacteria and the bacterial strains showed more susceptibility than the fungal strains tested. Among the plants, Vitex diversifolia exhibited the highest antibacterial activity and Mangifera andamanica showed the highest antifungal activity.

Abstract Now a day’s multidrug resistance phenomenon has become the main cause for concern and there has been an inadequate achievement in the development of novel antibiotics to treat the bacterial infections. Therefore, there is an unmet need to search for novel adjuvant. Vitamin C is one such promising adjuvant. The present study was aimed to elucidate the antibacterial effect of vitamin C at various temperatures (4°C, 37°C and 50°C) and pH (3, 8, and 11), against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria at various concentrations (5-20 mg/ml) through agar well diffusion method. Growth inhibition of all bacterial strains by vitamin C was concentration-dependent. Vitamin C significantly inhibited the growth of Gram-positive bacteria: Bacillus licheniformis (25.3 ± 0.9 mm), Staphylococcus aureus (22.0 ± 0.6 mm), Bacillus subtilis (19.3 ± 0.3 mm) and Gram-negative bacteria: Proteus mirabilis (27.67 ± 0.882 mm), Klebsiella pneumoniae (21.33±0.9 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18.0 ± 1.5 mm) and Escherichia coli (18.3 ± 0.3 mm). The stability of vitamin C was observed at various pH values and various temperatures. Vitamin C showed significant antibacterial activity at acidic pH against all bacterial strains. Vitamin C remained the stable at different temperatures. It was concluded that vitamin C is an effective and safe antibacterial agent that can be used in the future as an adjunct treatment option to combat infections in humans.

Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus are gram negative bacteria that can produce several secondary metabolites, including antimicrobial compounds. They have a symbiotic association with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The aim of this study was to isolate and identify Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus species and their associated nematode symbionts from Northeastern region of Thailand. We also evaluated the antibacterial activity of these symbiotic bacteria. The recovery rate of EPNs was 7.82% (113/1445). A total of 62 Xenorhabdus and 51 Photorhabdus strains were isolated from the EPNs. Based on recA sequencing and phylogeny, Xenorhabdus isolates were identified as X. stockiae (n = 60), X. indica (n = 1) and X. eapokensis (n = 1). Photorhabdus isolates were identified as P. luminescens subsp. akhurstii (n = 29), P. luminescens subsp. hainanensis (n = 18), P. luminescens subsp. laumondii (n = 2), and P. asymbiotica subsp. australis (n = 2). The EPNs based on 28S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) analysis were identified as Steinernema surkhetense (n = 35), S. sangi (n = 1), unidentified Steinernema (n = 1), Heterorhabditis indica (n = 39), H. baujardi (n = 1), and Heterorhabditis sp. SGmg3 (n = 3). Antibacterial activity showed that X. stockiae (bMSK7.5_TH) extract inhibited several antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on mutualistic association between P. luminescens subsp. laumondii and Heterorhabditis sp. SGmg3. This study could act as a platform for future studies focusing on the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds from these bacterial isolates.

Antibiotic resistance has become a serious global problem that threatens public health. In our previous work, we found that ocotillol-type triterpenoid saponin showed good antibacterial activity. Based on preliminary structure-activity relationship, novel serious C-3 substituted ocotillol-type derivatives 7–26 were designed and synthesized. The in vitro antibacterial activity was tested on five bacterial strains (B. subtilis 168, S. aureus RN4220, E. coli DH5α, A. baum ATCC19606 and MRSA USA300) and compared with the tests on contrast. Among these derivatives, C-3 position free hydroxyl substituted compounds 7–14, showed good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, compound 22 exhibited excellent antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) values of 2 μg/mL against MRSA USA300 and 4 μg/mL against B. subtilis. The structure-activity relationships of all current ocotillol-type derivatives our team synthesised were summarized. In addition, the prediction of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties and the study of pharmacophores were also conducted. These results can provide a guide to further design and synthesis works.

The aim of this study was to determine the preliminary phytochemical component and antibacterial activity of the leaves extract of Guiera senegalensis lam (Combretaceae) against three clinical isolates (Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Klebsiella species) using standard method of analysis. The test for phytochemical component revealed the presence of alkaloid, anthraquinolones, tannin and phlobatanins. The result of antibacterial activity showed that the ethanolic extract exhibit higher zone of inhibition against all the clinical isolates, with E. coli and Klebsiella species showed zone of inhibition of 35mm followed Staphylococcus aureus 30mm. Similarly, both aqueous and methanolic extract were sensitive to all the clinical isolate except Klebsiella species which showed resistance to the methanolic extract of the leaves. The results obtained in this research imply that the leaves extract of Guiera senegalensis lam could be useful in the treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Klebsiella species. In the paper own prepared materials with addition fluorine sources were evaluated. The aim of the study was to assess the quality and quantity of fluoride source on fluoride ions release from composite materials. Antibacterial activity of analyzed materials in relation to four bacteria was investigated. Fluoride ions release was measured by direct potentiometry method with fluoride ion selective electrode. The measurements were carried out after 1, 4, 7, 14, 30, 60 days of storage in buffer at pH 6.8. The antibacterial activity of the materials was evaluated against standard bacterial strains using the agar diffusion test. Tests show that the highest level of fluoride ions emission was observed for composite with fluoridated glass (material A) on the seventh day of the study. Similar fluoride ions amount was released from material consisted of fluoridated glass and ytterbium fluoride (material C), but not until on the thirtieth day of the study. After 24 hours of composite bonding there was inhibition of bacterial growth by composite C, whereas composite A did not show similar activity. On the eighth day after polymerization, both materials were significantly more active towards two bacteria.

antibacterial activity of leaves, fruits and bark of acer syriacum was evaluated against both negative and positive gram bacterial strains. The powder of above parts were sequentially extracted with aqueous methanol 80%, acetone and petroleumether by maceration. The in vitro antibacterial activity of A. syriacum extracts (in concentration of 200 mg/mL) was performed by agar well diffusion method. Among the tested extracts, leaves methanolic extract has shown the highest growth inhibition. Further, the extract was fractionated, separated by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and submitted to bioautography. the results indicate that the ethyl acetate extract had  the most efficient antibacterial  compounds that displayed inhibition zones (25 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and (28mm) against Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC700603. the clear zones were located at RF= 0.15.
