Objetivo: determinar a prevalência de Síndrome de Burnout em estudantes de graduação da área da saúde, em especial do curso de Enfermagem de uma instituição privada de ensino superior do Distrito Federal. Método: trata-se de estudo quantitativo, descritivo por meio da aplicação de dois questionários: um sociodemográfico e educacional e o Maslach Burnout Inventory – Students Survey. Resultados: participaram 356 estudantes de enfermagem, os quais não apresentaram a Síndrome de Burnout, mas obtiveram índices altos de despersonalização e baixa eficácia acadêmica. Acadêmicos do terceiro ano do curso foram os mais suscetíveis a desenvolver tal patologia. Conclusão: reforça-se a necessidade de novas reflexões e discussões acerca da concepção acadêmica dos estudantes de Enfermagem, em especial os acadêmicos que se encontram na metade do curso.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the burnout syndrome and its relationship with demographic and academic variables among undergraduate nursing students at a public university in Southern Brazil.METHOD: a quantitative study with 168 students, by applying an adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey, validated for this study. We used descriptive and variance analysis of the data analysis.RESULTS: we found that students do not have the burnout syndrome, manifesting high average scores in Emotional Exhaustion, low in Disbelief and high in Professional Effectiveness; that younger students who perform leisure activities have greater Professional Effectiveness, unlike students in early grades with no extracurricular activities; combining work and studies negatively influenced only the Professional Effectiveness factor, while the intention of giving up influenced negatively Disbelief and Professional Effectiveness factors.CONCLUSION: the situations that lead students to Emotional Exhaustion need to be recognized, considering the specificity of their study environments.

Objective: to evaluate the association of the burnout syndrome with daytime sleepiness and sleep quality among technical-level Nursing students. Method: a cross-sectional, analytical and quantitative study, conducted with 213 students from four technical Nursing courses in a city of Paraná, Brazil. Data collection was carried out using an instrument containing characterization information, the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results: the prevalence values of the burnout syndrome, excessive daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality were 4.7%, 34.7% and 58.7%, respectively. Excessive daytime sleepiness significantly increased the chances of high emotional exhaustion (ORadj: 5.714; p<0.001) and high depersonalization (ORadj: 4.259; p<0.001). Poor sleep quality, especially sleep disorders, was associated with all dimensions of the syndrome (p<0.05). Conclusion: high levels of the burnout syndrome dimensions were associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality. Educational institutions should include sleep hygiene and psychosocial support in their student health promotion programs.

Objective. Investigate the burnout syndrome among undergraduate students in nursing. Methods. Explanatory sequential mixed method study conducted at a public university in Brazil. Of the 119 nursing students, 114 consented to participate and answered a questionnaire composed of sociodemographic, academic variables, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey, which were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The participants of the quantitative phase with the indicative / risk of burnout were interviewed individually (n=21) to provide an in-depth understanding of the students' experiences regarding the dimensions of the syndrome, whose statements were analyzed by the Collective Subject Discourse. Results. The prevalence of burnout syndrome was 10.5% among the surveyed. The more advanced the school year, the higher were the exhaustion (p=0.003), depersonalization (p<0.001) and low academic effectiveness (p=0.012) scores. Students with a higher workload of assignments also had higher scores of exhaustion (p=0.001), depersonalization (p<0.001) and academic (in)effectiveness (p=0.042). Dissatisfaction with the course was related to higher exhaustion (p=0.049) and depersonalization (p=0.001). The collective speeches showed the daily demands of the course, considered as intense, producing overload and exhaustion, which produced symptoms of physical and mental illness. Thus, there was the student's distancing from the course activities, as a defensive attitude, which culminated in feelings of incompetence and frustration. Conclusion. The occurrence of burnout syndrome dimensions among nursing students was related to the activities of academic daily life. The aim of this research was to determine resilience and burnout levels among nursing students, and to analyze the relationship between these two variables and the sociodemographic profile of the sample. This sample was composed of 218 second grade nursing students belonging to the University of Murcia. Three instruments were used: an ad hoc questionnaire which included sociodemographic and relationship with peers and teachers questions, a Spanish adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The results showed a high level of emotional exhaustion in 28% of the sample, and a high level of cynicism in 19.7%. In addition, the data support the relationship between resilience and burnout in the sample of students analyzed (r Resilience-emotional fatigue = -0.25, r-Realization Personal Resilience / efficiency = 0.52). In conclusion of the study, we emphasize that students who showed a higher level of resilience experienced less emotional exhaustion and greater personal accomplishment. Similarly, the quality of relationship with teachers was associated with a higher presence of burnout syndrome.

Objective: The stressful college environment may cause Burnout Syndrome in nursing students, but few of them present stress resistance and do not show Burnout signs. Investigations that simultaneously assess these groups are limited. So, we assessed the impact of nursing students’ profile (biosocial and academic features) on the occurrence of Burnout Syndrome and Hardiness Personality.Methods: Cross-sectional, analytic and quantitative study. We applied a biosocial and academic form, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Hardiness Scale in 570 Brazilian nursing students. Logistic and linear regression analysis were used to assess the impact of biosocial and academic features on Burnout and Hardiness. The Ethics Research Committee at the University approved this project under protocol No. 0380.0.243.000-10.Results: Interest of keeping enrolled in course, sedentary lifestyle, semester and number of disciplines taken by students significantly contributed to increase the Burnout scores. Age, absence of children, living with family, dissatisfaction with nursing course and the unemployment significantly increased Hardiness scores. The variable “academic load” contributed to both phenomena.Conclusions: While biosocial features strength the hardy components in nursing students, protecting them from negative stress outcomes, nursing training characteristics seem negatively impact on student’s health. Thus, identifying the factors that contribute to stress resistance and those that may increase the risk of Burnout, will support interventions that to promote Hardy personality and prevent Burnout in academic environment.

Abstract Objective: To identify the prevalence and analyze the existence of predictive factors of burnout syndrome in nursing students of a public university unit. Method: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Data were collected from two instruments: a sociodemographic instrument and the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey. Simple and multiple logistic regression models were adjusted to assess the association between variables. Results: There were 100 students who participated in the research, of which 20% presented burnout syndrome. Second (p = 0.036) and third year students (p = 0.046), those using medication (p = 0.002) and those considering dropping out (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with burnout. Only students who were thinking of dropping out of the course (p = 0.025) maintained a significant association in the multiple logistic regression model, which means that the probability of an individual from the population from which the sample was extracted presenting burnout syndrome was higher in this variable. Conclusion: The burnout syndrome prevalence corresponded to 20%. The predictors of burnout were: second and third years of the course, use of medication and thinking of dropping out from the course.

Abstract Background Work stress is associated with a wide range of mental and physical symptoms and presents a challenge in public health. In this study, we highlighted burnout syndrome and musculoskeletal pain. The main goal was to test the efficacy of an intervention based on compensatory workplace exercises in the reduction of burnout levels and musculoskeletal pain. The questions were: 1) How high are the levels of burnout and musculoskeletal pain before the intervention? 2) Does the intervention contribute to reduce the levels of burnout and musculoskeletal pain? Methods This study was conducted in a hospital and employed a pre pos-test design using the following measures: Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. The participants are 49 administrative employees, 61.2% females with a mean age of 38.3 years (SD = 11.6). The intervention program consisted of 18 sessions of compensatory workplace exercises, held for five weeks, with a frequency of three sessions per week. Results In relation to burnout, the results obtained before the intervention (mean values) suggest moderate Exhaustion (2.50±0.94), higher Cynicism (3.27±0.92) and lower Professional Efficacy (1.81±0.41). Concerning musculoskeletal pain, it was more prevalent in the shoulders (69.4%) and back (upper 67.3% and lower 65.3%), followed by the thighs and neck (both 61.2%). After intervention, the results showed a significant (p &lt; 0.05) decrease of burnout and all musculoskeletal symptoms evaluated. Conclusions The results support the effectiveness of the compensatory workplace exercises in the reduction of burnout and musculoskeletal symptoms contributing to mental and physical health of the workers involved. This study was innovative due to the studied link between burnout and compensatory workplace exercises. Moreover, this study led to changes in the hospital, which implemented better practices for a healthier life of the workers. Key messages The intervention based on compensatory workplace exercises reduced burnout and musculoskeletal pain in a sample of administrative employees and had impact in the health policies of the hospital. The implemented intervention promoted workers' physical and mental health and led to better health practices in the hospital.

Abstract Background Burnout syndrome is a frequent syndrome related to people that feel a deterioration in their daily activities due to highly demandant psychological requirements in their workplaces. Within last decades, this syndrome has been studied across medical professionals, concluding that stress levels that physicians suffer is high enough to make them develop burnout syndrome. In the case of medical students, there are some recent studies, although with small samples. For this reason, given that this phenomenon may produce a huge impact in medical students’ development, the aim of this study is to analyze the influential factors that may contribute to its occurrence. Methods The necessary information was gathered through a web-based questionnaire, divided in two parts. The first part of the survey included questions related to personal aspects of the students. Burnout related questions (second part) were divided in three subscales to evaluate exhaustion, cynicism, and academic efficacy levels. Results Family support for studying medicine is associated with lower burnout levels in all three scales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The number of years spent in the degree show the opposite trend: the more years in the degree, the higher score in all burnout scales. Conclusions Burnout syndrome is a problem among medical students in Spain that increases with the number of years studying medicine. It should be also noticed that family support and vocational studies are independent factors related to lower levels of burnout.

Background: burnout syndrome is a serious and growing problem among medical staff. Its adverse outcomes not only affect health-care providers’ health, but also extend to their patients, resulting in bad-quality care. The COVID-19 pandemic puts frontline health-care providers at greater risk of psychological stress and burnout syndrome. Objectives: this study aimed to identify the levels of burnout among health-care professionals currently working at Assiut University hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: the current study adopted an online cross-sectional design using the SurveyMonkey® website for data collection. A total of 201 physicians were included and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scale was used to assess the three burnout syndrome dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Results: about one-third, two-thirds, and one-quarter of the respondents had high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, respectively. Younger, resident, and single physicians reported higher burnout scores. The personal accomplishment score was significantly higher among males. Those working more than eight hours/day and dealing with COVID-19 patients had significantly higher scores. Conclusion: during the COVID-19 pandemic, a high prevalence of burnout was recorded among physicians. Age, job title, working duration, and working hours/day were significant predictors for burnout syndrome subscale results. Preventive and interventive programs should be applied in health-care organizations during pandemics.

IntroductionThis is the first comprehensive evaluation of Burnout Syndrome across the UK Intensive Care Unit workforce and in all three Burnout Syndrome domains: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and lack of Personal Accomplishment.MethodsA questionnaire was emailed to UK Intensive Care Society members, incorporating the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for medical personnel. Burnout Syndrome domain scores were stratified by ‘risk’. Associations with gender, profession and age-group were explored.ResultsIn total, 996 multi-disciplinary responses were analysed. For Emotional Exhaustion, females scored higher and nurses scored higher than doctors. For Depersonalisation, males and younger respondents scored higher.ConclusionApproximately one-third of Intensive Care Unit team-members are at ‘high-risk’ for Burnout Syndrome, though there are important differences according to domain, gender, age-group and profession. This data may encourage a more nuanced understanding of Burnout Syndrome and more personalised strategies for our heterogeneous workforce.
