During the 2020 lockdown in response to COVID-19, students in the Master of Psychotherapy at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) were required to rapidly move their clinical work online. We surveyed these students about their experience of working clinically online. We used a mixed-methods approach and analysed qualitative data using grounded theory methods. Students found the move online difficult, with technological challenges, the loss of a professional clinical space, and having to establish and maintain the therapeutic alliance in the unfamiliar online setting. They showed a strong preference for in-person clinical work, along with scepticism about the efficacy of online therapy, though some acknowledged its convenience and others its currency and relevance. Most expressed a need for more specific training in online therapy. Students rated their technological skill level higher than their levels of interest in online communication. This suggests that preferences, rather than technical skill, influenced their hesitancy for working clinically online. While online therapy can impose increased strain on clinicians and directly impact their capacity to manage online clinical work, the literature finds strong and consistent evidence that online therapy has equivalent outcomes to in-person therapy. There is significant emphasis in the literature on the disjunct between the outcomes evidence and therapist expectations. This is modified somewhat by training and experience in online therapy. We recommend that research- active psychotherapists engage actively and collaboratively with the profession, through professional bodies, to encourage research-informed professional development and practice for clinicians; and that further research is conducted into effective strategies for training in online clinical delivery.

The working environment of nurses contains numerous hazards that can be particularly harmful to pregnant women. In addition, pregnancy-induced changes can themselves cause discomfort. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze pregnant nurses’ experiences of clinical work. This qualitative study analyzed data collected through in-depth interviews. From January to June in 2020, 12 shift-work nurses who had experienced pregnancy within three years were interviewed. The main question was “Could you describe your clinical work experience during pregnancy?” Qualitative data from field notes and transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. Six categories were extracted that described the nurses’ clinical work experience during pregnancy, as follows: “enduring alone,” “organizational characteristics of nursing,” “risky work environment,” “strengths that sustain work during pregnancy,” “growth as a nurse,” and “methods to protect pregnant nurses.” Pregnant nurses experienced various difficulties due to physical and mental changes during pregnancy, and the clinical working environment did not provide them with adequate support. The findings of this study will be helpful for developing and implementing practical maternity protection policies and work guidelines.

Project based learning (PoBL) is a constructivism learning approach that focuses around student centred learning. PoBL has been found to be effective in different tertiary institutions of learning across the globe. However, in spite the effectiveness of PoBL, it has not been adopted in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effective strategies for integrating PoBL in teaching and learning Woodwork Technology Education (WTE) at tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Three research questions were posed in this study. A mixed method approach involving both quantitative and qualitative method was employed for the study. The sample of the study comprised 50 in-service postgraduate students from Nigerian tertiary institutions studying Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for the quantitative aspect, and 9 in-service post graduate students for the qualitative part. A 16-item structured questionnaire was used for quantitative data collection while semi structured interview was used for qualitative data collection. Data was analyse using the SPSS software version 24 to analyse quantitative data and NVIVO 12 was used for qualitative data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that traditional instructional approach is the predominant method used in teaching and learning WTE at tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It was also revealed from the findings that PoBL encourage student ownership of learning, enhances students critical thinking, effective collaboration and communication. The findings from the study also revealed that restructuring of WTE curriculum at tertiary institutions in Nigeria to focus on a learner centred approach, as well as organising seminars and workshops for WTE lecturers to be acquainted with the application of PoBL in WTE teaching and learning were among the effective strategies for integrating PoBL in teaching and learning WTE at tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Finally, this paper calls for the integration of PoBL into the teaching and learning of WTE at Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of education in Nigeria for effectiveness in skills acquisition.

This study explores the perceptions of EFL instructors about their reflective practice and its effect on their professional development in a Saudi Arabian university. This study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Two study instruments were used; a survey questionnaire with a study sample of 100 male and female participants and semi-structured interviews with a study sample of seven female instructors. The findings show that some instructors in general have a positive perception of reflective practices and they utilize a diversity of reflective tools. Female instructors show a greater degree of involvement in a reflective practice than male instructors in three of the four examined dimensions (cognitive and meta-cognitive, moral and learner and reflective teaching in general). However, no significant difference is reported between males’ and females’ perceptions in terms of the fourth dimension (practical). Based on the findings, recommendations have been made to encourage reflective practices in the Saudi EFL context.

Our understanding of gentrification outside of the Anglo-Saxon core is relatively undeveloped. In order to contribute to a more de-centered approach, we ask who are the gentrifiers and how do they change central city neighbourhoods in a post-socialist context? The answers are explored through a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data: construction permits analysis, census tract data, field trips, and interviews with tenants, former owners, and real estate agents. Findings indicate that gentrifiers vary in nature. They include state tenants, former owners, marginal gentrifiers, political capitalists, and institutional investors. Through their actions, central neighbourhoods have gained younger, more educated, and smaller households. Beyond this case study, we emphasize the usefulness of rent gap theories, the need to study displaced households, and the potential of property rights to enrich theories of gentrification.

Abstract Social media offer an unprecedented opportunity for companies to interact more closely with customers and market their products and services. But social media also present reputational risks as negative word-of-mouth can spread more quickly and widely through these platforms than ever before. This study investigates how companies respond to customer complaints on Twitter. We propose an innovative mixed methods approach (i) to identify the key features that mark the styles used by a sample of companies in their replies to customers and (ii) to determine the most effective strategies for responding to complaints. Our results reveal that an affective style, expressed through devices such as stance markers, emphatics, and amplifiers, elicits the most positive response from complainants, regardless of the formality of the message. The study advances our understanding of the features and effects of corporate social media discourse. It also provides business communication practitioners with linguistically grounded insights that can inform the development of appropriate strategies for dealing with negative word-of-mouth online.

In view of the negative impact of pain on the quality of life of cancer patients, identifying and stimulating the use of effective strategies to minimize these painful feelings is highly relevant for care. The aim of this study was to identify painful experiences of adolescents with cancer and to get to know their strategies for pain relief. This is an exploratory research, using qualitative data analysis. Semistructured interviews were held with nine adolescents with cancer, who reported on acute, recurring and chronic, physical and emotional painful experiences. To relieve these pains, they described pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, including: distraction, presence of relatives, bed positioning, cooperation to accomplish procedures and keeping up positive thinking. Therefore, it is essential for health professionals to know available evidence for pain relief and to develop skills to articulate this knowledge with their professional experience and with the patients' own strategies.

Abstract The current study examines the ways in which grandparents raising their grandchildren (GRCs) understand custody, perceive the legal system, and access resources related to their grandchild(ren)’s welfare. Due to the detrimental impact of the opioid crisis over the last decade, the number of skipped generation households is growing significantly not only in Alabama, but across the U.S.. Many GRCs lack crucial information regarding custody arrangements in a general sense or as it applies to education, healthcare, mental health, and financial aid. Critical gaps remain present in the GRC literature necessary to aid in future intervention studies and promote more effective support, resources, and policy for this population. The present study sought to examine the unique needs and experiences of GRCs, and to specifically explore legal aspects associated to their grandchild(ren)’s welfare. Using a mixed methods approach, GRCs in Tuscaloosa, Alabama completed a quiz of custodial knowledge, a survey on legal perception, and a semi-structured interview. Quantitative data revealed the most and least commonly understood aspects of custody, as well as opinions on associated legal systems related to a child’s “best interest.” Qualitative data analysis revealed the common themes related to custody to be unexpected assistance, ineffective assistance, leniency for parental deviance, fear of losing custody, and time and cost demands.

This paper provides an overview and a synthesis of the findings of a large, multifaceted study investigating outcomes from paediatric cochlear implantation. The study included children implanted at several Australian implant clinics and attending a variety of early intervention and educational settings across a range of locations in eastern Australia. It investigated three major aspects of childhood cochlear implantation: (1) parental expectations of their children's implantation, (2) families' decision-making processes, and (3) the communication, social, and educational outcomes of cochlear implantation for deaf children. It employed a mixed-methods approach in which quantitative survey data were gathered from 247 parents and 151 teachers, and qualitative data from semistructured interviews with 27 parents, 15 teachers, and 11 children and adolescents with cochlear implants. The summarised findings highlight several areas where challenges remain for implant clinics, parents, and educators if children with cochlear implants are to reach their full potential personally, educationally, and socially.

Abstract Background: Maternal overweight and obesity are associated with numerous adverse outcomes including higher rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Overweight and obesity before, during and after pregnancy are therefore a significant public health priority in England. This project explored and mapped healthy weight service availability at different stages of the childbearing cycle.Methods: A mixed methods approach included a questionnaire-based survey disseminated through Local Maternity Systems and semi-structured interviews or focus groups with providers and commissioners. Current maternal weight service provision was explored along with some of the barriers and facilitators for providing, delivering and accessing healthy weight services. Descriptive statistics were reported for quantitative data and content analysis was used for thematic reporting of qualitative data. Results: A total of 88 participants responded to the survey. All services were offered most frequently during pregnancy; with healthy eating and/or weight management services offered more often than physical activity services. Few services were targeted specifically at women with a raised body mass index. There was a high degree of inconsistency of service provision in different geographical areas. Several themes were identified from qualitative data including "equity and variation in service provision", "need for rigorous evaluation", "facilitators” to encourage better access or more effective service provision, including prioritisation, a change in focus and co-design of services, "barriers" encountered including financial and time obstacles, poor communication and insufficiently clear strategic national guidance and "the need for additional support”.Conclusions: There is a need to reduce geographical variation in services and the potential health inequalities that this may cause. Improving services for women with a raised body mass index as well as services which encourage physical activity require additional emphasis. There is a need for more robust evaluation of services to ensure they are fit for purpose. An urgent need for clear national guidance so that healthcare providers can more effectively assist mothers achieve a healthy weight gain was identified. Commissioners should consider implementing strategies to reduce the barriers of access identified such as childcare, transport, location and making services free at the point of use.

Abstract Aim Core Surgical Training (CST) programs are associated with a 60% risk of burnout and failure to progress. This study aimed to assess the influence of a novel Enhanced Stress and Resilience Training (ESRT) course delivered alongside a focused induction at the start of CST in a single UK Statutory Education Body. Method All CST1s were invited to participate in a six-week ESRT course teaching mindfulness-based exercises to develop tools to deal with stress at work and burnout. Primary outcome measures were compliance with ESRT programme and degree of burnout measured using Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scoring. Results Of 43 boot camp attendees, 38 trainees completed questionnaires, with 24 choosing to participate (63.2%; male 13, female 11, median age 28 yr.) Burnout was identified in 23 trainees (60.5%) with no evident difference in baseline MBI scores between participants or not (p = 0.77, median 4 [0-11] vs. 4 [1-11]). MBI scores were comparable before and after ESRT in the intervention cohort (p = 0.63, median 4 [0-11] vs. 4 [1-10]). Qualitative data reflected challenges delivering ESRT because of arduous and inflexible clinical on-call rotas and time pressures related to academic curriculum demands. Despite these challenges, 22 (91.6%) considered the course valuable, 14 (58.3%) continued to use the techniques in daily clinical work there was and unanimous support to continue the program in future. Conclusion ESRT was feasible and further research is warranted to determine its medium-term efficacy.
