Abstract Objective: This qualitative study aimed to identify the service and support needs of people with a recent history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) living in the community. Methods: A postal survey was sent to 662 people 6–18 months after hospital admission for a mild-to-severe TBI. The survey included an open-ended item (‘wish-basket’) for collecting ideas about important unmet needs. Results: Responses from 53 individuals were coded and processed using thematic analysis. Five themes (n = 39) were identified, three of which were related to personal needs. These personal wishes were about being symptom-free, independent and emotionally supported by, and connected to, loved ones. The remaining themes were about the wished-for changes to the health system and society, such as wishing for health care continuity (as opposed to being abandoned), and for greater understanding and support by society. Conclusions: There is scope to improve the services and support for people living with TBI in the community. This includes reconsidering the way that discharge occurs, addressing the personal needs that remain when living in the community and promoting greater social awareness of TBI to counteract disadvantage.

The High School for Recording Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, serves students who’ve had trouble in more traditional schools. Yet, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the school was able to maintain, and even exceed, its prepandemic metrics of achievement. Michael Lipset and Linda Nathan attribute this success to the school’s unique staffing structure. Instead of having content teachers attempt to meet the wide array of student needs on their own, the school takes a team-based approach, with traditional certified teachers serving as content advisers who manage student learning and other team members (many of whom have similar backgrounds as the students) addressing students’ personal needs. All faculty, no matter their specific role, are called facilitators of learning, but they focus on different ways of engaging students.

Abstract: Utilitarianism Before and During the Pandemic The pandemic reveals shortages and forces some countries to ration access to intensive care. The supply of ICU beds and personal needs to be determined before the pandemic hits. The rules for planning and use of capacities can be the same and follow utilitarian norms. We illustrate this for the hold-back capacities in acute hospital care. In addition, we deal with the reasons that justify the regulatory measures and criticize the inconsistent attitude of governments with regard to the massive containment measures in the lockdowns as compared to the absence of any compulsion within vaccination programs.
