In this study, a sandwich piezoelectric nano-energy harvester model under compressive axial loading with a core layer fabricated of functionally graded (FG) porous material is presented based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). The von Karman type geometric nonlinearity and the axial loading were considered. The electromechanical governing equations were obtained using Hamilton’s principle. The nonlinear vibration frequencies, root mean square (RMS) voltage output and static buckling were obtained using the Galerkin method. The effects of different types of porous distribution, porosity coefficients, length scale parameters, nonlocal parameters, flexoelectricity, excitation frequencies, lumped mass and axial loads on the natural frequency and voltage output of nanobeams were investigated. Results show that the porous distributions, porosity coefficient of porous materials, the excitation frequencies and the axial load have a large effect on the natural frequency and voltage output of the sandwiched piezoelectric nanobeams. When the NSGT is considered, the critical buckling load depends on the values of the nonlocal parameters and strain gradient constants. In addition, the electromechanical conversion efficiency of the post-buckling process is significantly higher than that of the pre-buckling process. The flexoelectric effect can significantly increase the RMS voltage output of the energy harvester.

Nonlinear ultrasound crack detection methods are used as modern, non-destructive testing tools for inspecting early damages in various materials. Nonlinear ultrasonic wave modulation, where typically two or more frequencies are excited, was demonstrated to be a robust method for failure indicators when using measured harmonics and modulated response frequencies. The aim of this study is to address the capability of multi-frequency wave excitation, where more than two excitation frequencies are used, for better damage identification when compared to single and double excitation frequencies without the calculation of dispersion curves. The excitation frequencies were chosen in such a way that harmonic and modulated response frequencies meet at a specific frequency to amplify signal energy. A new concept of nonlinearity parameter grouping with multi-frequency excitation was developed as an early failure parameter. An analytical solution of the one-dimensional wave equation was derived with four fundamental frequencies, and a total of 64 individual and 30 group nonlinearity parameters. Experimental validation of the approach was conducted on metal plates with different types of cracks and on turbine blades where cracks originated under service conditions. The results showed that the use of multi-frequency excitation offers advantages in detecting cracks.

One of the main tasks in the research of a helicopter two-speed transmission system was to improve its dynamic characteristics. For the low gear mode of the system, a dynamic model was established by using the lumped parameter method, the method of Runge-Kutta was used to solve the nonlinear dynamic system equations. The effect of the gear module on the dynamic transmission error, dynamic load of the gear pair and the dynamic windup angle of a one-way clutch were studied. And the effect of the one-way clutch torsional stiffness on the dynamic transmission error and dynamic load of the gear pair was also studied. The results show that: 1)~the dynamic transmission error of the gear pair decreases and the dynamic load of the gear pair increases with the increase of the gear module at the lower range of excitation frequencies; 2)~the dynamic windup angle of the one-way clutch increases with an increase of the gear module. 3)~the dynamic transmission error of the gear pair and the maximum dynamic load increases with an increase of the one-way clutch torsional stiffness at the lower and medium range of excitation frequencies. The above results can provide reference for the subsequent upgrade and improvement of the two-speed transmission system.

The tuned mass damper (TMD) can be applied to suppress earthquake, wind, and pedestrian- and machine-induced vibration in factory buildings or large span structures. However, the traditional TMD with a fixed frequency will not be able to perform effectively against the frequency variations in multiple hazards. This paper proposed a frequency-adjustable tuned mass damper (FATMD) to solve this limitation of current TMD. The FATMD presented in this paper is composed of a simple assembly consisting of a supported beam with a mass, in which the frequency of the FATMD is changed by adjusting the span of the beam. The kinematic equation of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) structure installed with an FATMD is established to analyze the effect of the damping ratio, mass ratio, and stiffness on the vibration damping. The fundamental frequency of the FATMD at different spans is verified by simulation and experiments. Forced vibration experiments with different excitation frequencies are also conducted to verify the performance of the FATMD. The results show that the proposed FATMD can effectively suppress the vertical vibration of structures at different excitation frequencies, including frequencies at a range higher than what a traditional TMD may not be able to suppress. Additionally, the proposed FATMD is applied to a long-span pedestrian bridge which vibrates frequently due to the walking of pedestrians, the running of escalators, and earthquakes. The numerical results indicate that the FATMD can effectively reduce the vertical vibration of the pedestrian bridge under the excitations of pedestrians, escalators, and earthquakes.

This paper describes the design and the performance of simultaneous, multifrequency impedance measurement system for four inductive-loop (IL) sensors which have been developed for vehicle parameters measurement based on vehicle magnetic profile (VMP) analysis. Simultaneous impedance measurement on several excitation frequencies increases the VMP measurement reliability because typical electromagnetic interferences (EMI) are narrowband, and should not simultaneously affect, in the same way, all measurement bands that are spread in the frequency, i.e., it is expected that at least one measurement band is disturbance-free. The system consists of two standard and two slim IL sensors, specially designed and installed, the analogue front-end, and an industrial computer with digital-to-analogue and analogue-to-digital converters accessed via field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The impedance of the IL sensors is obtained by vector measurement of voltages from auto-balancing bridge (ABB) front-end. Complex voltages are demodulated from excitation frequencies with FIR filters designed with the flat-top windows. The system is capable of delivering VMPs in real-time mode, and also storing voltages for off-line postprocessing and analysis. Field distributions and sensitivities of slim and standard IL sensors are also discussed. Field test confirmed assumed increased reliability of VMP measurement for proposed simultaneous multifrequency operational mode.
