The article focuses on issues demonstrating the role of architecture in the development of Prussian psychiatry in the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. The Provincial Treatment and Care Institution Allenberg (now Znamensk, Russian Federation) is used as a case study to demonstrate the perception of model solutions used in Prussian asylums located in distant provinces. The asylum discussed in this article met the contemporary requirements, proving that these models and newest trends reached East Prussia very quickly. The asylum complex in Allenberg was a testimony to the development of Prussian and European architectural thought in the service of medicine. Unfortunately, today the former asylum remains in a poor condition and is treated as unwanted legacy rather than a cultural monument.

Abstract: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and portable seismic property analyzer (PSPA), was used in concrete structures for monitoring, quantifying, and mapping the deterioration of bridge decks. The Montauk Bridge deck was assessed based on PSPA and GPR data. Based on the analysis of the PSPA data, it was determined that over 65% of bridge conditions were rated serious to poor condition with an average compressive strength of less than 2500 psi; less than 35% of bridge deck conditions were rated fair to good with an average compressive strength over 2500 psi. Based on GPR data, it was determined that 72% of the bridge deck was in serious to poor condition, and only 28% of the bridge deck was in fair to good condition. Additionally, the analyses of the ground penetrating radar data indicated possible rebar corrosion in places. For these reasons, it is recommended that the Montauk bridge’s deck be completely replaced. Keywords: Condition assessment, NDT, GPR, PSPA, bridge deck

Every year all over the world, many lives are lost due to accidents on the roads. Different factors have contributed to this tragic death, such as the poor condition of roads and bad weather such as rain. To solve this problem, an Integrated Speed Bump Detector to notify road users using the Internet of Things (IoT) has been proposed to help road users to detect speed bumps earlier by getting notified through sound from the buzzer and red light from an LED. This also increases the safety of road users during their trips and provides information if a speed bump is approaching. The ultimate goal of this project is to prevent an accident from occurring during road trips and to promote a careful attitude among road users.

Here, we provide updates to our recent paper reviewing the taxonomy and nomenclature of the Eastern ratsnakes (Pantherophis obsoletus complex, Colubridae, Serpentes). Specifically, we clarify that Coluber alleghaniensis Holbrook, 1836 is a subjective, rather than objective, senior synonym of Elaphis holbrookii Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854. Contrary to our statement that USNM 1733–4 were syntypes of Scotophis lindheimerii Baird & Girard, 1853, the former is the holotype and the latter is the paratype. The holotype is lost and the paratype is in poor condition, but no neotype designation is warranted at present. We note that USNM 248870, which we designated as the lectotype of Coluber obsoletus lemniscatus Cope, 1888, was originally cataloged as USNM 4710. This catalog number was shared with the type of the salamander Amblystoma tenebrosum Baird & Girard, 1852, and the snake was re-cataloged as USNM 248870 in 1985. Finally, we originally treated C. reticulatus La Cépède, 1789 and C. reticularis Daudin, 1803 as senior subjective synonyms of C. corais Boie, 1827, but here corroborate recent authors in designating it a senior subjective synonym of C. obsoletus Say in James, 1823. As the Commission suppressed C. reticulatus La Cépède, 1789 (an exoplonym), this subsequently rendered C. reticularis Daudin, 1803 (an exoploneonym) unavailable as well.

In the paper, we have a look at one of the most popular and most used forms of protection of industrial heritage today: transformation. Central Slovakia is the region with the most industrial monuments and sites in Slovakia and many of them are more or less aesthetic elements of the local landscape since the Middle Ages. However, except of some popular destinations, Central Slovakia does not belong among the regions with high attendance of domestic and foreign tourists. Several industrial monuments are in poor condition and located in remote places where tourists rarely venture. In this article, we would like to point out transformation and adaptive reuse as an appropriate form of protection for industrial monuments and have a closer look at the potential of rural regions and small towns. As a positive example of a conversion, we analyze the Čiernohronská Forest Railway in Čierny Balog in more detail. We focus not only on its positive economic and aesthetic impact on the surrounding landscape and people’s lives, but also on building prestige and an important position of the rural and unattractive touristically region in comparison with popular and prestigious tourist destinations.

<p>The neglected coastal edge of the port landscape has left behind unreceptive scars on the city’s urban fabric. These prominent locations are pivotal links between coastal towns and the sea; they are currently in very poor condition.¹ This thesis explores a site with these characteristics, Nelson, nestled between the Southern Alps at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The compact and intimate geography of the Nelson region is surrounded by the ocean; with the city growing central to its port. Due to the once thriving local exports and industrial trade the port hastily expanded, the inevitable decline of the industrial era has resulted in a landscape of disregard which has distanced the city from the water. These neglected waterfront locations now taint the pristine image of the Nelson Haven.  This thesis examines how a carefully considered architectural design can reintegrate this pivotal location back into the city’s urban fabric while reinforcing the relationship between the people of Nelson and the water. This design-led research utilises the sport of rowing with its link to the water as the catalyst to reconnect the people of Nelson to the waterfront and the water itself.  This design-led thesis employs the ideologies of atmospheric experiences to materialise the importance of water to sense of place. This is achieved by exploiting the atmospheric experiences of material, space and time through an architectural dialogue with the water’s duality. The Nelson Haven experiences vast tidal movements which forms the foundations for the experience observed at the interface of architecture and water. The assortment and condition of flower beds at the Soborniy district of Dnipro city were researched. 513 flower beds were identified on the territory of 18 objects (10 streets, 4 boulevards and 4 park zones). 151 flower beds, 21 ridges, 322 containers, 5 mixborders, 7 borders, 1 rockery, 6 near-barrel tree circle decorated with flowers were identified. The total area of flower beds is 7844.3 m2, of which almost 80 % falls on flower beds, about 10 % - on ridges, other types of flower beds make up an insignificant part. The assortment of flowering plants is represented by 15 species of annuals and 33 species of perennials. The leaders in the frequency of use in flower beds among annuals can be called brilliant salvia, marigolds erect and rejected, hybrid petunia, ever-flowering begonia. Garden roses, irises, stonecrops, hosts, perennial heliopsis prevail among perennial flowers. Analysis of the flower beds condition showed that landscaping objects located on boulevards look best. More than half of them are in good condition, the rest are in satisfactory condition. Flower gardens located in parks and squares are in poor condition. Only 5,7 % of flower beds were found in good condition - mainly on the territory of Shevchenko Park. Almost 40 % of flower beds are in poor condition, often completely overgrown with weeds. The flower beds located in the highways are also in most unsatisfactory condition due to the lack of regular professional care. Marigolds, ever-flowering begonia, hybrid petunia, rock alyssum retain the best condition among annuals by the end of the season. The most decorative during the season among perennials remained various types of sedum and hosta lancifolia. It is undesirable to use plants that quickly lose their decorative effect: irises, perennial heliopsis, whitewashed cornflower. Combined flower beds look best with the involvement of annual and perennial flowering plants, as well as ornamental shrubs.

Lots of entertainment and game facilities that are no longer active on Kumala Tenggarong Island have caused a decline in the number of visitors each year, one of the facilities is outdoor Gokart Arena which currently in poor condition. The solution to increase visitor attraction and reintroduce Karting to the public is by planning Gokart Arena and RC Cars Indoor Arena as entertainment and game-themed racing facilities on Kumala Tenggarong Island. However Gokart racing activities have a negative impact on the environment such as residual liquid (oil) and solid waste (iron frame, etc.), cause noise and pollution and require good lighting for the safety of racers, therefore building design is emphasized on utilities, especially wastewater, natural lighting and natural ventilation for sustainability and comfort of buildings and the environment can be maintained properly. The application of the industrialist architectural style to the facade and interior layout through material exposure elements creates a unique character in the building with a rough and masculine look.

This research is to study the quality of living environment in workers’ accommodation for construction workers in Malaysia. In Malaysia, workers’ accommodation known as rumah kongsi. The research aim to identify appropriate and quality of living environment for construction workers. Majority the construction workers accommodation in Malaysia are currently in a poor condition. The poor condition of accommodation for construction workers have raised many issues affecting their surroundings and built environment. Some of the issues include health, social and finance. However, there are initiatives made by the Malaysian government especially Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (KLCH) in which they have come out with guidelines in providing accommodation for the construction workers. Previous studies showed that some developers and contractors providing improper and inadequate living environment for the construction workers, which lead to several issues, including safety and poor living facilities. The objectives of the studies, firstly to study the existing code of practice and guidelines in providing workers accommodation, secondly, to evaluate the existing workers accommodation in Malaysia and finally to propose the good, safety and practical living environment for workers accommodation. The methodology apply in this study include mix method or combine method which are, interview, case study, observation and content analysis. The data obtained from various methods are using descriptive analysis. In conclusion, this research findings attempts to provide guidelines and model of the most suitable living environment for workers accommodation in construction industry in Malaysia.
