Purpose: This study examined the role of uncertainty and perceived control in predicting the communicative participation and mental health of adults who stutter. Method: Two hundred sixty-nine adults who stutter completed measures of uncertainty about stuttering, perceived control of stuttering, communicative participation, and global mental health. In addition, participants self-reported on a variety of demographic and speech-related measures. Correlational analyses and hierarchical regression were performed to determine associations between variables of interest. Results: Uncertainty accounted for significant variance in communicative participation and global mental health after statistically controlling for the effects of demographic and speech-related variables. Perceived control accounted for significant variance in communicative participation over and above what was accounted for by demographic variables, speech-related variables, and uncertainty. Conclusions: The findings suggest that uncertainty about stuttering and perceived control of stuttering should be accounted for during assessment and intervention with adults who stutter. Interventions that specifically target uncertainty and perceived control may be useful in improving therapeutic outcomes for individuals who stutter.

This study describes the influence of polymer flow length on mechanical properties of tested polymer, specifically polycarbonate. The flow length was examined in a spiral shaped mould. The mould cavity’s surface was machined by several methods, which led to differing roughness of the surface. The cavity was finished by milling, grinding and polishing. In order to thoroughly understand the influence of the mould surface quality on the flow length, varying processing parameters, specifically the pressure, were used. The polymer part was divided into several segments, in which the micro-mechanical properties, such as hardness and indentation modulus were measured. The results of this study provide interesting data concerning the flow length, which was up to 3% longer for rougher surfaces, but shorter in cavities with polished surface. These results are in disagreement with the commonly practiced theory, which states that better surface quality leads to greater flow length. Furthermore, evaluation of the micro-mechanical properties measured along the flow path demonstrated significant variance in researched properties, which increased by 35% (indentation hardness) and 86% by indentation modulus) in latter segments of the spiral in comparison with the gate.

An increase in narcissism has been reported by experts over the years. Narcissists bring a lot of negative consequences to themselves and to the people around them. This study investigates that perceived parenting leads to the development of inflated, unstable self-concept. The inflated self-concept lays the framework for the development of narcissistic traits among individuals; perceived parenting affects this relationship. A sample of 628 adults was taken from North Cyprus through purposive sampling. Scales for perceived parenting, self-concept, and narcissism were administered. Results showed that the statistically significant variance in the self-concept is explained by perceived parenting. Both mothers and fathers contributed significantly to the development of inflated self-concept. Moreover, multiple linear regression results showed a higher significant variance in narcissistic traits due to self-concept compared with perceived parenting. Mediational tests also showed that high levels of narcissistic traits were indirectly related to self-concept through perceived parenting. The study findings have challenged the notion of only mothers being responsible for narcissistic traits among their children. The study results also suggest that targeting self-concept in individuals with narcissistic traits may be a good directive for therapeutic interventions.

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between specific aspects of core stability and knee injury risk factors during drop-jump (DJ) landing.Methods: Eighteen college-aged male amateur basketball players participated in the project. Kinetic and kinematic data for DJ tasks were collected with force plates and infrared cameras. Raw data were processed to calculate knee joint angles and joint moments during DJ landing. Different components of core stability were represented by the sit-ups in 20 s (SU), trunk extensor endurance, trunk flexion and extension range of motion, dominant extremity single-leg stance time (DLS), and dominant extremity single-leg hop distance, respectively.Methods: Correlation and regression were used to determine the relationship between jumping-related biomechanical parameters and core stability components.Results: SU shared significant variance with the peak moment of knee extension (PMKE, p < 0.05), the peak moment of knee abduction (PMKA, p < 0.05), and the angle of knee internal rotation at initial contact (AKRI, p < 0.05). DLS shared significant variance with the angular motion of knee internal rotation (AMKR, p < 0.05) and the AKRI (p < 0.01). SU and DLS together could explain 52% of the variance observed in the AKRI, and the result was significant.Conclusion: Core stability’s strength and motor control aspects played an essential role in preventing knee injury during DJ landing. An integrative training program addressing core strength and motor control could be considered for coaches and athletes to prevent knee injury through core training and conditioning.

Highly methylated Long Interspersed Nucleotide Elements 1 (LINE-1) constitute approximately 20% of the human genome, thus serving as a surrogate marker of global genomic DNA methylation. To date, there is still lacking a consensus about the precise location in LINE-1 promoter and its methylation threshold value, making challenging the use of LINE-1 methylation as a diagnostic, prognostic markers in cancer. This study reports on a technical standardization of bisulfite-based DNA methylation analysis, which ensures the complete bisulfite conversion of repeated LINE-1 sequences, thus allowing accurate LINE-1 methylation value. In addition, the study also indicated the precise location in LINE-1 promoter of which significant variance in methylation level makes LINE-1 methylation as a potential diagnostic biomarker for lung cancer. A serial concentration of 5-50-500 ng of DNA from 275 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded lung tissues were converted by bisulfite; methylation level of two local regions (at nucleotide position 300–368 as LINE-1.1 and 368–460 as LINE-1.2) in LINE-1 promoter was measured by real time PCR. The use of 5 ng of genomic DNA but no more allowed to detect LINE-1 hypomethylation in lung cancer tissue (14.34% versus 16.69% in non-cancerous lung diseases for LINE-1.1, p < 0.0001, and 30.28% versus 32.35% for LINE-1.2, p < 0.05). Our study thus highlighted the optimal and primordial concentration less than 5 ng of genomic DNA guarantees the complete LINE-1 bisulfite conversion, and significant variance in methylation level of the LINE-1 sequence position from 300 to 368 allowed to discriminate lung cancer from non-cancer samples.

Purpose Narrative skill represents a higher-level linguistic skill that shows incremental development in the preschool years. During these years, there are considerable individual differences in this skill, with some children being highly skilled narrators (i.e., precocious) relative to peers of their age. In this study, we explored the contribution of three lower-level language skills to a range of narrative abilities, from children performing below expected levels for their age to those performing much higher than the expected levels for their age. We speculated that individual differences in lower-level skills would contribute meaningfully to variability in narrative skills. Method Using a sample of 336 children between 3 and 6 years of age ( M = 4.27 years, SD = 0.65), both multiple regression and quantile regression approaches were used to explore how vocabulary, grammar, and phonological awareness account for variance in children's “narrative ability index” (NAI), an index of how children scored on the Narrative Assessment Protocol–Second Edition relative to the expected performance for their age. Results Multiple regression results indicated that lower-level language skills explained a significant amount of variance (approximately 13%) in children's NAI scores. Quantile regression results indicated that phonological awareness and vocabulary accounted for significant variance in children's NAI scores at lower quantiles. At the median quantile, vocabulary and grammar accounted for significant variance in children's NAI scores. For precocious narrators, only vocabulary accounted for a significant amount of variance in children's NAI scores. Conclusion Results indicate that lower-level language skills work in conjunction to support narrative skills at different ability levels, improving understanding of how lower-level language skills contribute across a spectrum of higher-level linguistic abilities.

The leptin system plays a crucial role in the regulation of appetite and energy homeostasis in vertebrates. While the phenotype of morbid obesity due to leptin or leptin receptor (lepr) loss of function is well established in mammals, evidence in fish is controversial, questioning the role of leptin as the vertebrate adipostat. Here we report on 3 lepr loss of function (lof) and one leptin loss of function allele in zebrafish. In order to demonstrate that the lepr lof alleles cannot transduce a leptin signal, we measured socs3a transcription after intraperitoneal leptin which is abolished by lepr lof. None of the lepr/lepa lof alleles lead to obesity / a body growth phenotype. We explore possible reasons leading to the difference in published results and find that even slight changes in background genetics such as inbreeding siblings and cousins can lead to significant variance in growth.

The present study aimed at investigating the student-teachers’ beliefs towards learning mathematics, and beliefs of mathematics teaching efficacy and their relation to their perception of the development of pupils’ understanding of mathematics. Three measures were used in this study: The beliefs towards learning mathematics, the mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs, and the mathematics teacher's perception of the development of pupils’ understanding. Validity and reliability were established. A sample of student-teachers participated in the study. The results of the study showed that the more the positive student-teachers’ beliefs towards learning mathematics, the greater their mathematics teaching-efficacy was. Similarly, the greater the positive student-teachers’ belief towards learning mathematics, the more they become aware of the development of pupils’ understanding of mathematics. Finally, increasing the teaching efficacy of mathematics student-teachers was associated with an increase in their perception of the development of pupils’ understanding of mathematics. Both beliefs and teaching efficacy explained significant variance in the perception of their pupils’ understanding of mathematics.

Abstract In Chile, as in other countries, there are large gender gaps in reading achievement. One factor that may explain some of these results is male and female students’ motivation towards reading and books. The present study examined gender-related factors that contribute to explain students’ reading motivation. One hundred and fifteen Chilean secondary students completed measures of reading motivation, gender identity and reading gender stereotypes. A multivariate analysis of variance showed that after controlling for language arts achievement, female students exhibited higher levels of reading motivation, in both dimensions: self-concept and value. Paired samples t-tests showed that all participants, male and female, viewed reading as a more feminine endeavor, revealing reading gender stereotypes. A multiple regression analysis showed that reading gender stereotypes explained significant variance in students’ reading self-concept. Expressive identity traits (stereotypically feminine) as well as self-reported sexism both explained significant variance in the value that students associated with reading. The study offers empirical evidence about a relevant but understudied topic, especially in this region. These findings may contribute to the promotion of equal literacy development opportunities for students of both sexes in Latin America.
