The Wuhan Ionospheric Oblique Backscatter Sounding System (WIOBSS) was applied as a bistatic radar to record the ionospheric E-region responses to a solar eclipse on 22 July 2009. The transmitter was located in Wuhan and the receiver was located in Huaian. The receiver observed anomalous echoes with larger Doppler shifts at the farther ranges compared with the echoes reflected by Es. According to the simulated ray propagation paths of the reflected and scattered waves, we considered that the anomalous echoes were scattered by E-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs). The locations of the FAIs recorded by the WIOBSS were estimated with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) and the observed propagation parameters. These irregularities occurred at around the eclipse maximum and lasted for ~20–40 min. The steep plasma density gradient induced by the fast drop photo ionization under the lunar shadow was beneficial to the occurrence of gradient drift instability to generate the FAIs. They were different from the gravity wave-induced irregularities occurring in the recovery phase of the solar eclipse.

Abstract In this paper, (pure, slow, and fast) Alfvèn waves for the accepted conditions in Northern-hemisphere at E-region of ionospheric plasma were calculated with low latitudes by using Eq. (20,25-26) and the real geometry of Earth’s magnetic field, at hours 12.00 LT for the 1990 year which sunspot is maximum. One of the most important results of this study is to show analytically that the “MHD modes= (pure, slow and fast) Alfvèn waves” depend not only on the angle between the wave propagation vector (k) and the magnetic field (B) but also on the declination (D=It is the angle value between the direction of the sun's rays and the equatorial plane) and magnetic dip angle (I=It is the angle between real north and magnetic north). From the results obtained, the behavior of the magnitudes of the squares of the phase velocities of all MHD modes is consistent with the behavior of the distribution of electron density with low geographic latitude, even if the magnetic field vector is both perpendicular and parallel to the propagation vector of the wave. In parallel, the phase velocities of the waves are greater in summer than in winter. It has been determined that the propagation velocities of the fast and slow MHD mode in the magnetic equatorial trough region at (q = I) are very small, the energy is almost non-existent, but if q = 90 + I, the energy increases with latitude and is approximately maximum at the low latitude limit. It can be said that the minimum points are between 0-10 oN latitudes where the wave energies are the smallest, and the maximum points are between 20-30 oN latitudes the wave energies are the biggest.

In the lower ionospheric E region, shallow regions of high electron density are found, which are called sporadic E (ES) layers. ES layers consist of thin clouds of accumulated ions. They occur mainly at middle latitudes, and they are most frequently found during the summer season. ES are generally formed at heights between 90 and 120 km. At midlatitudes, their occurrence can be described through the wind shear theory. According to this theory, ES formation is due to interaction between the metallic ion concentration, the Earth’s magnetic field, and the vertical shear of the neutral wind. Here, we analyze ES occurrence rates (OR) obtained from ionospheric radio occultation measurements by the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC constellation. To derive information on ES from RO, we use the Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) profiles of the GPS L1 phase measurements. If large SNR standard deviation values occur that are concentrated within a layer of less than 10 km thickness, we assume that the respective SNR profile disturbance is owing to an ES layer.

Midlatitude ES are found to be mainly connected with a migrating diurnal and semidiurnal component. Especially at high latitudes of the southern hemisphere, nonmigrating components such as a diurnal westward wave 2 and a semidiurnal westward wave 1 are also visible. Near the equator, a strong diurnal eastward wavenumber 3 component and a semidiurnal eastward wavenumber 2 component are found in summer and autumn. Terdiurnal and quarterdiurnal components are weaker than the diurnal and semidiurnal ones. We discuss seasonal and global distributions of migrating and nonmigrating components, and their relation to neutral wind shear derived from ground-based observations and numerical modeling.

Abstract This paper introduces a new approach for the determination of the source region of BW (beat wave) modulation. This type of modulation is achieved by transmitting HF continuous waves with a frequency difference of f, where f is the frequency of modulated ELF/VLF (extremely low frequency/very low frequency) waves from two sub-arrays of a high power HF transmitter. Despite the advantages of BW modulation in terms of generating more stable ELF/VLF signal and high modulation efficiency, there exists a controversy on the physical mechanism of BW and its source region. In this paper, the two controversial theories, i.e. BW based on D-E region thermal nonlinearity and BW based on F region ponderomotive nonlinearity are examined for cases where each of these two theories exists exclusively or both of them exist simultaneously. According to the analysis and the simulation results presented in this paper, it is found that the generated VLF signal amplitude exhibits significant variation as a function of HF frequency in different source regions. Therefore, this characteristic can be utilised as a potential new approach to determine the physical mechanism and source location of BW.

Abstract. Using OI6300 airglow images collected over São João do Cariri (7.4∘ S, 36.5∘ W) from 2000 to 2007, the equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) zonal drifts were calculated. A strong day-to-day variability was observed in the EPB zonal drifts, which is directly associated with the very complex dynamics of the nighttime thermosphere–ionosphere system near the Equator. The present work investigated the contribution of the semidiurnal lunar tide M2 for the EPB zonal drifts. The M2 presented an amplitude of 3.1 m s−1 in the EPB zonal drifts, which corresponds to 5.6 % of the average drifts. The results showed that the M2 amplitudes in the EPB zonal drifts were solar cycle and seasonally dependent. The amplitude of the M2 was stronger during the high solar activity, reaching over 10 % of the EPB zonal drift average. Regarding the seasons, during the Southern Hemisphere summer, the M2 amplitude was twice as large (12 %) compared to the equinox ones. The seasonality agrees with other observations of the M2 in the ionospheric parameters such as vertical drifts and electron concentration, for instance. On the other hand, the very large M2 amplitudes found during the high solar activity agree with previous observations of the lunar tide in the ionospheric E region.
