A diagnostic study has been carried out to analyse and understand the causes of unusual rainfall activity over Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) State during 2nd to 5th September, 2014. The careful examination of available historical rainfall data of India Meteorological Department (IMD) network reveals that many stations in the region received ever-highest 24, 48 & 72 hours cumulative rainfall during first week of September in 2014, breaking all previous records. In result, there was flooding in most parts of the State, which has caused loss of human lives and huge loss of property. The synoptic interpretation of this unusual event carried out in the study confirms very favourable meteorological conditions, as there was a western disturbance (WD) in form of cyclonic circulation/trough in mid-tropospheric level, which remained practically stationary over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir from 2nd to 5th September, 2014 and its interaction with a monsoon Low-Pressure Area (LPA) over northwest & adjoining central India during the same period.  In addition, jet maxima of the order 60-80 knots and high moisture advection from the Bay of Bengal as well as from Arabian Sea over the region were also responsible for this unusual rainfall.

Abstract Introduction: Ventriculo-Peritoneal Shunt (VPS) related ascites is a rare complication of pediatric Low Grade Gliomas (pLGG). Physiopathology of this complication is not fully understood and there is paucity of data regarding the molecular profile of pLGG gliomas complicating with ascites and the optimal management of this unusual event. Methods: International multi-institutional retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with BRAF altered pLGG and ascites arising as a complication of VPS. Demographics, tumor characteristics, therapeutic approaches and outcomes were recorded. Results: Nineteen patients were identified. Median age at diagnosis was 14 months (IQR:7-16). Most patients (16;84.2%) presented with lesions involving the optic pathway. Mean tumor standard volume was 34.8 cm2 (range:12.5-85.4). Pilocytic Astrocytoma was the most frequent histological diagnosis (14;73.7%). Eight (42.1%) tumors harbored BRAF V600-E mutation and seven (36.8%) KIAA1549 fusion. The onset of ascites was documented at a median time of 5 months following VPS insertion. Four (21%) patients were managed with paracentesis only, 7(36.8%) required both paracentesis and shunt diversion, 7(36.8%) required only a shunt diversion and 1 (5,2%) patient was managed conservatively. Ascites was the indication to change chemotherapy regimen in 10 patients. Eight patients received targeted therapy (4 dabrafenib/4 trametinib) and 5 were radiated. Eleven patients were alive at the time of this report with a median OS of 69 months (range:3-144). Conclusions: Ascites is an early feature in the course of pLGG irrespective of alterations in the RAS/MAPK pathway with high mortality rate and should be considered as an adverse prognostic risk factor in pLGG.

Background: Intimal sarcomas are rare malignant mesenchymal tumors arising from the heart and large blood vessels. Their intraluminal growth leads to vascular obstructive symptoms and peripheral neoplastic embolization. Direct infiltration of the lungs or metastases to the pulmonary system, occur in 40% of cases and extrathoracic spread is frequent, also in presentation. Intussusception is an unusual event in adults, accounting for <5% of bowel obstructions. In most cases it is caused by a malignancy and requires surgical resection.Case Presentation: We describe a rare case of a 50-year-old man suffering of bowel obstruction due to intussusception sustained by a small bowel metastasis of a primary cardiac intimal sarcoma. One year and a half before the onset of abdominal symptoms, a grade II intimal sarcoma was removed from his left atrium and consequently he followed a chemotherapy protocol. Four months later a CT scan revealed local recurrence. Eighteen months after heart surgery he referred to the ER with abdominal pain. CT scan showed an ileal intussusception and the patient was scheduled for surgery. A tract of 10 cm ileus was removed containing an intramural polypoid solid mass. Histological analyses revealed a grade II intimal sarcoma consistent with his first diagnosis. Conclusion: Primary heart tumors are late found and often partially resected, therefore metastatic pathways are to be expected. Adult small bowel intussusception is a rare event and caused by a malignancy in one third of cases. Therefore, our recommendation is to always resect the tract involved in order to perform a proper diagnosis.

A new species of shrimp-goby was collected at depths of 60–80 m off the southern Israeli Mediterranean coast. A unique ‘DNA barcoding’ signature (mtDNA COI and Cytb) revealed that it differs from any other previously bar-coded goby species clustered phylogenetically with the shrimp-gobies group, in which Cryptocentrus is the most speciose genus. A morphological study supported the assignment of the fish to Cryptocentrus and differentiated the new species from its congeners. The species is described here as Cryptocentrus steinhardti n. sp. However, the present phylogenetic analysis demonstrates a paraphyly of Cryptocentrus and emphasizes the need for revision of the genus based on integrating morphological and genetic characteristics. This finding constitutes the third record of an invasive shrimp goby in the Mediterranean Sea. An intriguing ecological issue arises regarding the possible formation of a fish-shrimp symbiosis in a newly invaded territory. Describing an alien tropical species in the Mediterranean prior to its discovery in native distribution is an unusual event, although not the first such case. Several similar examples are provided in the present article.

An un-erupted permanent canine crossing the midline is called transmigration and is considered to be an unusual event.1 The incidence of maxillary canine impaction ranges between 0.8–2.8%. The proper diagnosis of the transmigrated canines is achieved by radiographic evaluation. In this case report a rare phenomenon of bilateral impacted and migrated maxillary canines in a kissing position is discussed.

Nowadays, the Portuguese population is aging at a fast pace. The situation is more severe in the interior regions of the country, where the rural areas have few people and have been constantly losing population; these are mostly elderly who, in some cases, live socially isolated. They are also often deprived of some types of social, health and technological services. One of the current challenges with respect to the elderly is that of improving the quality of life for those who still have some autonomy and live in their own residences so that they may continue living autonomously, while receiving the assistance of some exterior monitoring and supporting services. The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm demonstrates great potential for creating technological solutions in this area as it aims to seamlessly integrate information technology with the daily lives of people. In this context, it is necessary to develop services that monitor the activity and health of the elderly in real time and alert caregivers or other family members in the case of an unusual event or behaviour. It is crucial that the technological system is able to collect data in a nonintrusive manner and without requiring much interaction with the elderly. Smartband devices are very good candidates for this purpose and, therefore, this work proposes assessing the level of acceptance of the usage of a smartbands by senior users in their daily activities. By using the definition of an architecture and the development of a prototype, it was possible to test the level of acceptance of smartbands by a sample of the elderly population—with surprising results from both the elderly and the caregivers—which constitutes an important contribution to the research field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). The evaluation showed that most users did not feel that the smartband was intrusive to their daily tasks and even considered using it in the future, while caregivers considered that the platform was very intuitive.

The latest COVID-19 pandemic is a specific and unusual event. It forced universities to close their doors and move fully to distance education. The sudden shift from traditional education to full distance education created many challenges and difficulties for universities, faculty members, and students. This study aims to investigate the challenges and obstacles faced by undergraduate women in Saudi Arabia universities while using online-only learning during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Moreover, this study provides some recommendations to address these challenges from undergraduate women’s perspectives. The study used a qualitative research methodology to investigate the challenges and difficulties. The participants were undergraduate women selected using random purposive sampling technique from the population of College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The final sample consisted of 68 undergraduate women who responded to a predesigned open-ended questionnaire that was sent via e-mail to targeted respondents. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results of the research revealed that the most obvious challenges identified by the participants were technical issues, lack of in-person interaction, distractions and time management, lack of a systematic schedule, stress and psychological pressure, missing the traditional university environment, limited availability of digital devices, and lack of access to external learning resources.

As an unusual event, fasting can induce strong physiological and psychological reactions, but there is still no clear understanding of how previous fasting experiences affect people’s responses to current fasting. This study aimed to investigate the influence of previous fasting experiences on participants’ basic physiological and psychological responses in a fasting experiment conducted under intensive medical monitoring. For a 22-day experiment divided into four phases (3-day Baseline; 10-day Complete Fasting; 4-day Calorie Restriction; and 5-day Recovery phases), a total of 13 persons participated; the participants were divided into a group with prior fasting experience (Experienced: N = 6) and a group without prior fasting experience (Newbie: N = 7). The results indicate no group differences in physiological responses (i.e., weight, glucose, and ketone bodies); however, differences in psychological states were observed, with the Newbie group showing more negative psychological states overall throughout the experiment (i.e., greater appetite, more negative mood states, more stress, less vitality, and fewer recovery resources). Hence, previous fasting experience may be a buffer against negative feelings during current fasting. For this reason, it is important to consider fasting experiences as a vital factor in future research.
