Abstract Relating visual images to textual messages may have great potential in facilitating students’ reading comprehension. The inevitable and important presence of visuals in textbooks obliges language teachers to exploit all semiotic resources to deepen students’ understanding. However, analysis of how images interact with text in textbooks has been rare, and among the efforts it has generally been found that visuals and text often fail to achieve coherence. This study investigates whether and how text and image complement each other ideationally (i.e., the “what”) by six sense relations (e.g., synonymy and hyponymy) and interpersonally (i.e., reader engagement) by the Mood system in ninth-grade English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks to reach intersemiotic complementarity (IC). The results revealed that ideational rather than interpersonal IC is more frequent, where many more Participants (i.e., the nominal groups) than Processes (i.e., the verbal groups) in the texts find their visual complements. Ideational IC is particularly high in Information Reports while Recounts generally mark higher percentages of interpersonal IC. To accomplish ideational IC, repetition is most frequent, followed by hyponymy (i.e., general-specific relation) and collocation (i.e., relations that naturally co-occur). Distinct IC patterns also characterize the different editions of textbooks investigated, which may suggest their different potentials in catering to students of varying proficiencies.

There is no doubt that data mining and linked data can enhance library service delivery. Data mining aspects such as text and image mining will enable libraries to have access to data that can be used to discover new knowledge aid planning for effective service delivery or service improvement. Also, linked data will enable libraries connect with other libraries to share such data that can enhance job performance leading to enhanced productivity, improved service delivery, and wider visibility and access to library resources.

This study is a multimodal discourse analysis study, it investigates the correlation between image and text. It studies the environmental slogans that contain text and image correlated together, with reference to other techniques that are used within these slogans, hence it analyses the semiotic side of slogans with reference to the semiotic tools like colors that are integrated within these slogans. Four different environmental slogans within the analysis show that the tools and texts are not the same, while the message is one and unique, different texts, color, gestures and draws might help to convey the same message to others, all these details are analyzed relation to the text.

The article deals with the use of the phraseological units in print advertisements in the German print media. The focus is the relations between phraseological units in the texts and images of the advertisements. The introductory part provides a brief overview of phraseology as a linguistic discipline and its role in advertisements, the structure of advertisements and possible modifications of phraseological units. The results of the analysis of semantic modifications showed certain relations between phraseological units in texts and images of the advertisements. According to the typology of Hartmut Stöckl (2004), we first defined the relation between a phraseological unit as a latent or explicit relation. In the latent relation phraseological units create a certain relation between text and image. There are two subgroups of the latent relation: phraseological units, which are visually evoked, and phraseological units, which are textually evoked and expressed. In the explicit relation phraseological units are materialized in image and text. Phraseological units, which appear isolated only in one place, are classified in the subgroup of the punctual relation. In the subgroup of the connected relation are phraseological units, to which other linguistic elements and structures refer. The analysis of 84 print advertisements showed that phraseological units are mostly used explicitly and in a connecting manner. This means phraseological units are not used isolated, but the text is characterized by an expressive or phraseological language that is linked to the advertisement’s message in image and text at the same time. The research confirmed that phraseological units are very popular as fixed and idiomatic units in advertisements, because they take on the persuasive functions and represent understandable, connotative and easily memorable structures.

The purpose of this study is to create a monitoring system for cluster housing. The method used in this research was experimental. Monitoring carried out in this system was installed and tested on ten houses. This system used an ESP-MESH for communication between ESP32 boards in residential areas. The process of sending data to the online server used two ESP32 boards that function as a mesh server and a gateway for data transmission. The data sent is in the form of data from ultrasonic sensors, PIR1 and PIR2 sensors, Flame sensors, Gas sensors, and Photos. The photo result was taking by ESP32CAM when the system detects an intruder. When something bad happens, such as fire detection, intruders, and gas leaks, residents will receive text and image notifications through the LINE application. The head of security will also get notifications via the web application. The web application is built using the Django framework. The results of this study are a monitoring system for cluster housing using ESP32, ESP-MESH, and Django. Based on the test results, this system has been running well by the initial objectives.

This essay will discuss the book Maldicidade (2014) by the Spanish-Brazilian photographer Miguel Rio Branco with a special attention to its organization as a narrative and poetic unity as a photobook. In focus is the book’s composition as an implicit dialogue between text and image and the use of modernist avantgarde techniques of montage and collage aiming at the expression of a contemporary reality of misery and hardship in the big cities of the Americas. The overarching argument is that the unity of the book as a photobook surpasses the referential nature of photography through visual narrativity in the effort to reveal the common condition of its posthuman urbanity.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the prigentian poetical experience of deconstruction and the poetry conceived as a work in progress based this time on an inter-art dialogue. At the crossroads of literary theory and comparative literature, we will explore the author’s efforts to redefine the limits of the poetical experience and his intentions to even erase the conventional boundaries between literary or artistic categories. Since the poetical oeuvres of Prigent, as well as his theoretical work advance various reflections on the limits of the language and the medium of expression, we aim to analyze how this aspects impact the relation between text and image in the prigentian poetical work. Eventually, our work interrogates the role of the intertextual and intermedial dialogue in Prigent’s attempt to radically redefine the limits of the poetical experience.

We present a multi-modal genre recognition framework that considers the modalities audio, text, and image by features extracted from audio signals, album cover images, and lyrics of music tracks. In contrast to pure learning of features by a neural network as done in the related work, handcrafted features designed for a respective modality are also integrated, allowing for higher interpretability of created models and further theoretical analysis of the impact of individual features on genre prediction. Genre recognition is performed by binary classification of a music track with respect to each genre based on combinations of elementary features. For feature combination a two-level technique is used, which combines aggregation into fixed-length feature vectors with confidence-based fusion of classification results. Extensive experiments have been conducted for three classifier models (Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest) and numerous feature combinations. The results are presented visually, with data reduction for improved perceptibility achieved by multi-objective analysis and restriction to non-dominated data. Feature- and classifier-related hypotheses are formulated based on the data, and their statistical significance is formally analyzed. The statistical analysis shows that the combination of two modalities almost always leads to a significant increase of performance and the combination of three modalities in several cases.
