Reading diagrams is an important ability needed by college students, particularly to writing their thesis. This ability could help students in describing and communicating the results of their research. Conversely, the inability to read diagrams causes errors in interpreting the results of the research. This descriptive qualitative study aims to describe the ability of students to read diagrams in terms of gender differences and the tendency to choose problems between bar/line diagrams, and the reasons behind the difficulties for students reading diagrams. This study involved 25 students of Mathematics Education, University of Lampung. Research data were collected using test and interview instrument. The results showed that students’ability both male and female to read diagrams was classified as moderate, the ability to read bar charts of female students was higher than that of male students but the ability to read line diagrams of male students was higher than female students, female students tend to choose bar diagrams rather than line diagrams while male students tend to choose line diagrams rather than bar diagrams, and the cause of difficulties in reading diagrams for female students were errors in understanding the meaning words while male students were errors of logical thinking in associating data with other data.

This study describes a method for collecting data from nonliterate, non-English-speaking populations. Our audio computer-assisted self-interview instrument with color-labeled response categories was designed for use with helper assistance. The study included 30 dyads of nonliterate older Hmong respondents and family helpers answering questions about health. Analysis of video recordings identified respondents’ problems and helpers’ strategies to address these problems. Seven dyads displayed the paradigmatic question–answer sequence for all items, while 23 departed from the paradigmatic sequence at least once. Reports and pauses were the most common signs of problems displayed by respondents. Paraphrasing questions or response categories and providing examples were the most common helper strategies. Future research could assess the impact of helpers’ strategies on data quality.

The purpose of the residency interview is to determine the extent to which a well-qualified applicant is a good fit with a residency program. However, questions asked during residency interviews tend to be standard and repetitive, and they may not elicit information that best differentiates one applicant from another. The iCAT (interactive Candidate Assessment Tool) is a novel interview instrument that allows both interviewers and interviewees to learn about each other in a meaningful way. The iCAT uses a tablet computer to enable the candidate to select questions from an array of video and nonvideo vignettes. Vignettes include recorded videos regarding some aspect of the program, while other icons include questions within recognizable categories. Postinterview surveys demonstrated advantages over traditional interview methods, with 93% agreeing that it was an innovative and effective tool for conducting residency program interviews. The iCAT for residency interviews is a technological advancement that facilitates in-depth candidate assessment.
