Abstract Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) is widely used in PDO in low permeability tight gas formations to enhance production. The application of HF has been expanded to the Oil South as conventional practice in enhancing the recovery and production at lower cost. HF stimulation is used in a number of prospects in the south Oman, targeting sandstone formations such as Gharif, Al Khlata, Karim and Khaleel, most of which have undergone depletion. Fracture dimension are influenced by a combination of operational, well design and subsurface parameters such as injected fluid properties, injection rate, well inclination and azimuth, rock mechanical properties, formation stresses (i.e. fracture pressures) etc. Accurate fracture pressure estimate in HF design and modeling improves reliability of HF placement, which is the key for improved production performance of HF. HF treatments in the studied fields provide large volumes of valuable data. Developing standardized tables and charts can streamline the process to generate input parameters for HF modeling and design in an efficient and consistent manner. Results of the study can assist with developing guidelines and workflow and for HF operations. Field HF data from more than 100 wells in south Oman fields were analyzed to derive the magnitude of breakdown pressure (BP), Fracture Breakdown Pressure (FBP), Instantaneous Shut-In Pressure (ISIP) pressure, and Fracture Closure Pressure (FCP) and develop input correlations for HF design. Estimated initial FCP (in-situ pore pressure conditions) is in the range of 15.6 - 16 kPa/mTVD at reservoir formation pressure gradient of about 10.8 kPa/m TVD bdf. However, most of the fields have undergone variable degree of depletion prior to the HF operation. Horizontal stresses in the reservoir decrease with depletion, it is therefore important to assess the reduction of FCP with reduction in pore pressure (stress depletion). Depletion stress path coefficient (i.e. change on FCP as a fraction of change in pore pressure) was derived based on historic field data and used to predict reduction of FCP as a function of future depletion. Data from this field indicates that the magnitude of decrease in fracture pressure is about 50% of the pore pressure change. Based on the data analysis of available HF data, standardized charts and tables were developed to estimate FCP, FBP, and ISIP values. Ratios of FBP and ISIP to FCP were computed to establish trend with depth to provide inputs to HF planning and design. Results indicate FBP/FCP ratio ranges between 1.24-1.35 and ISIP/FCP ratio ranges between 1.1 to 1.2. Developed workflow and standardized tables, charts and trends provide reliable predictions inputs for HF modeling and design. Incorporating these data can be leveraged to optimize parameters for HF design and modeling for future wells.

We performed a hydrogen combustion analysis in the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MWe (APR1400) containment during a severe accident initiated by a small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) which occurred at a lower part of the cold leg using a multi-dimensional hydrogen analysis system (MHAS) to confirm the integrity of the APR1400 containment. The MHAS was developed by combining MAAP, GASFLOW, and COM3D to simulate hydrogen release, distribution and combustion in the containment of a nuclear power plant during the severe accidents in the containment of a nuclear power reactor. The calculated peak pressure due to the flame acceleration by the COM3D, using the GASFLOW results as an initial condition of the hydrogen distribution, was approximately 555 kPa, which is lower than the fracture pressure 1223 kPa of the APR1400 containment. To induce a higher peak pressure resulted from a strong flame acceleration in the containment, we intentionally assumed several things in developing an accident scenario of the SBLOCA. Therefore, we may judge that the integrity of the APR1400 containment can be maintained even though the hydrogen combustion occurs during the severe accident initiated by the SBLOCA.

The purpose of this paper is to stabilize the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore continuously while drilling. A new nonlinear dynamical system is developed and a controller is designed to stabilize the annular pressure and achieve asymptotic tracking by applying feedback control of the main pumps. Hence, the paper studies the control design for the well known Managed Pressure Drilling system (MPD). MPD provides a closedloop drilling process in which pore pressure, formation fracture pressure, and bottomhole pressure are balanced and managed at the surface. Although, responses must provide a solution for critical downhole pressures to preserve drilling efficiency and safety. Our MPD scheme is elaborated in reference to a nontrivial backstepping control procedure and the effectiveness of the proposed control laws are shown by simulations.

Abstract The presence of conductive and extended heterogeneous features not connected to the wellbore and located beyond the investigation depths of standard characterization tools can be the reason for unexpected loss of net pressure during stimulation treatments due to the hydraulic fracture breakthrough into these heterogeneous areas. In current field practice, if such breakthrough occurs, it is considered as bad luck without the possibility of the quantitative analysis. This mindset can be changed in favor of the stimulation and reservoir management success using an approach that ties the thorough fracture pressure analysis with the output of the specific acoustic reflectivity survey capable of identifying position, shape, and orientation of far-field heterogeneous features. The approach consists of four steps and is applicable to cases when the hydraulic fracture experiences breakthrough into the heterogeneity. First, before the stimulation treatments, at the reservoir characterization stage, a borehole acoustic reflectivity survey is run. Gathered data are interpreted and visualized according to a specific workflow that yields the image of the heterogeneous areas located around the wellbore in the radius of several tens of meters. Second, the hydraulic fracturing treatment is performed, and fracture pressure analysis is performed, which identifies the pressure drops typical for the breakthrough. Third, after the breakthrough into the heterogeneity is confirmed, the distance to this heterogeneity is used as a marker for calibration of the fracture properties and geometry. Finally, the post-stimulation pressure and production data are used to define the properties of the heterogeneous features, such as conductivity and approximate dimensions. The comprehensive field application example of the suggested approach confirmed its effectiveness. For the tight carbonate formations, the heterogeneity in a form of fracture corridor was revealed by the acoustic reflectivity survey at least 20 m away from the wellbore. The breakthrough into this heterogeneity was observed during the acid fracturing treatment. The distance to the heterogeneity and observed pumping time to breakthrough were used as markers characterizing fracture propagation; reservoir and rock properties were adjusted using a fracturing simulator to obtain this fracture propagation. Finally, the post-stimulation production data were analyzed to determine infinite conductivity of the fracture corridor and quantify its extent downward. Data gathered during reservoir and hydraulic fracture properties calibration allowed for optimization of stimulation strategy of the target layer throughout the field; the information about the heterogeneity’s properties allowed for optimization of the completion and reservoir development strategy.

Abstract Wellbore instability is one of the most important causes of Non-Productive Time causing billions of dollars of losses every year in the petroleum industry. During the drilling operations, the drilling mud is generally utilized to maintain the wellbore stability. However, the drilling mud is subjected to fluctuations caused by several processes such as the drill string vibration cyclic loads which can result into wellbore instability. In this paper, a nonlinear finite element software ABAQUS is utilized as the numerical simulator to evaluate the time dependent pore pressure and stress distribution around the wellbore after integration of drill string vibration cyclic loads. A MATLAB program is then developed to investigate the wellbore stability by computation of the time dependent wellbore collapse pressure and fracture pressure. The numerical results showed that the safe mud window which was initially constant became narrower with the time after integration of vibration cyclic load. The collapse pressure without vibration cyclic load increased by 14.33 % at the final simulation time while the fracture pressure decreased by 13.80 %. Interestingly, the safe mud windows widened with the increase of the normalized wellbore radius as the wellbore fracture pressure increased and the collapse pressure decreased. This study provides an insight into the coupling of the wellbore stability and the continuous cyclic loads generated by drill string vibrations which is an aspect that has been rarely discussed in the literature.

Shunted screen gravel packing is a kind of technology which is difficult to complete gravel packing with the conventional method in low fracture pressure formation and long wellbore length condition. According to the characteristics of LS 17-2 deepwater gas field, the shunted screen packing tool was designed and the gravel packing process and packing mechanism were analyzed. The variation law of the flow friction, flow rate distribution in multichannel, and other parameters of the shunted screen gravel packing were analyzed and calculated. The friction calculation model of different stages of gravel packing was established. A gravel packing simulation software was developed to simulate the friction in different stages of shunted screen gravel packing. The parameters such as sand-dune ratio, pumping sand amount, packing length, and packing time in the process of packing were also calculated. In deepwater horizontal well gravel packing, the results show that the friction ratio of the string is the largest in the stage of injection and α-wave packing. While the friction increases rapidly in the stage of β-wave packing because the carrier fluid needs to flow through the long and narrow washpipe/screen annulus. Particularly when the β-wave packing is near the beginning of the open hole, the packing pressure reaches the maximum. The calculated results are in good agreement with the measured results of the downhole pressure gauge. The model and software can provide technical support for the prediction and optimization of gravel packing parameters in the future.

Abstract Leak-off pressure is a main factor to induce formation leak-off so that it can be utilized as a crucial parameter to analyze the causation of well leak-off accidents, and that in-depth investigation on leak-off pressure is of vital importance for secure drilling. By analyzing the characteristics of leak-off formation, this paper divides the leak-off into natural leak-off and fractured leak-off, and then defines the conception of minimal leak-off pressure. The leak-off mechanism of fractured formation is investigated. Investigation results show that the currently existent prediction method of fracture pressure is established on the foundations of non-filtration borehole wall assumption as well as the Terzaghi effective stress model. These foundations are not consistent with the practical features of thief formation, which would inevitably cause deviation of calculated results with actualization. Natural leak-off formation constitutes the majority of formation leak-off phenomena. Therefore, it is urgent to build up the leak-off pressure curve instead of fractured pressure curve and take precautions against natural leak-off. The technique of leak-off pressure prediction with fully-coupled 3D natural fracture modeling was applied in the fractured reservoir which located in the northwest of Junggar Basin, China. Case analyses have proved that this lost circulation pressure model is of sufficiency in scientific bases and pertinence. The prediction result derived from the model is relatively consistent with the actual situation and consequently provides a substantial basis for a rational design of the drilling fluid density as well as the leak resistance and sealing. Therefore it is suggested that the design of drilling engineering should take the lost circulation pressure into consideration.

Abstract This study deals with a lazy well completed with no packer in place. The main producing formation is showing strong signs of depletion where it lost more 2000 psig of reservoir pressure since the production started. Previous experiences in this well and other offset wells show there is demand for Nitrogen Injection Through Coiled Tubing Unit in the tubing in order to lift the well and bring it online whenever the well is shut-in for any reason. Direct natural gas injection at the casing head is a cost-effective alternative to rigless well lift operations. However, this is a challenging thing to achieve since it requires precise knowledge of injection rates and casing head pressure, additional to that formation fracture pressure and other reservoir characteristics should be taken into consideration. Data were collected and dynamic wellbore is created and linked to near well reservoir model to capture the transient behavior of the reservoir during start-up process. From Dynamic Modeling and simulation of the production system, best injection pressure, production choke, injection time and quantities are estimated and optimized for more efficient lifting process. After Initiating the well, production stability is observed in the transient simulator to ensure the success of the well lifting method. This method of production initiation is cost effective, and if implemented properly should bring the well back in production fast. Successful implementation this method demands a precise wellbore model to be created and shut-in surveys should be used to match the well status when it's not producing to tune the wellbore and fluid parameters.

AbstractThe harvest of hydrocarbon from the depleted reservoir is crucial during field development. Therefore, drilling operations in the depleted reservoir faced several problems like partial and total lost circulation. Continuing production without an active water drive or water injection to support reservoir pressure will decrease the pore and fracture pressure. Moreover, this depletion will affect the distribution of stress and change the mud weight window. This study focused on vertical stress, maximum and minimum horizontal stress redistributions in the depleted reservoirs due to decreases in pore pressure and, consequently, the effect on the mud weight window. 1D and 4D robust geomechanical models are built based on all available data in a mature oil field. The 1D model was used to estimate all mechanical rock properties, stress, and pore pressure. The minimum and maximum horizontal stress were determined using the poroelastic horizontal strain model. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were calibrated using drained triaxial and uniaxial compression tests. The pore pressure was tested using modular dynamic tester log MDT. The Mohr–Coulomb model was applied in the 4D model to calculate the stress distribution in the depleted reservoir. According to study wells, the target area has been classified into four main groups in Mishrif reservoir based on depletion: highly, moderately, slightly, and no depleted region. Also, the results showed that the units had been classified into three main categories based on depletion state (from above to low depleted): L1.1, L1.2, and M1. The mean average reduction in minimum horizontal stress magnitude was 322 psi for L1.1, 183.86 psi for L1.2, and 115.56 psi for M1. Thus, the lower limit of fracture pressure dropped to a high value in L1.1, which is considered a weak point. As a result of changing horizontal stress, the mud weight window became narrow.
