Ad personalization is becoming the dominant promotional tactic, further enhanced by new technologies applications. Greater efficiency is the main goal of such an advertising approach, but it can cause the appearance of the so-called “privacy paradox” that can induce negative consumer reactions in terms of avoiding such ads. This paper investigates the factors influencing the avoidance of personalized ads communicated through the social network Facebook. Part of the research model deals with the impact of perceived personalization, perceived irritation, and perceived privacy concerns on skepticism towards advertising and advertising avoidance. Furthermore, the empirical research was conducted on data collected through the Facebook and WhatsApp mobile applications. Following the obtained results, there is no negative effect of perceived personalization to skepticism towards advertising while it exists toward advertising avoidance. Furthermore, a positive effect of perceived irritation to skepticism towards advertising does not exist, but positive effects to ad avoidance do. The direct positive effect of perceived privacy concerns to skepticism and ad avoidance was not found. Also, skepticism about personalized ads was found not to be positively associated with avoiding personalized ads. In addition to new insights, the results can help design and implement promotional campaigns through social media technologies.

It is known that perceived intrusiveness and privacy concerns, mediated by irritation, indirectly affect advertising avoidance. This research attempts to verify the importance of perceived advertising value by investigating its moderated mediation effect on the links between those endogenous variables. The research model was empirically verified with data derived from 374 valid off-line responses. Analysis found that both perceived intrusiveness and privacy concerns increased irritation in using mobile social media. Irritation caused by perceived intrusiveness and privacy concerns had positive mediating effects on advertising avoidance. Ubiquity increased perceived intrusiveness and privacy concerns, whereas personalization reduced perceived intrusiveness. Customization increased perceived intrusiveness, whereas informativeness significantly reduced it. Social interaction increased privacy concerns, whereas social integration decreased them. The moderated mediation effect of perceived advertising value among women was negative. In the low-exposure group, a negative moderated mediation effect of perceived advertising value on the relationship between irritation and advertising avoidance was also found.

Purpose - This paper aims to explore antecedents of ad avoidance with the context in the Vietnam pawnbroking industry. Furthermore, the differences in ad avoidance under personal characteristics will firstly appear in this study. Methodology - A qualitative method from 412 social media users was used to test the proposed model. All data were assessed reliability and validity on SPSS version 26 before conducting into CFA and CB-SEM in AMOS software. Findings - The findings indicate that while ad skepticism and perceptions ad as controversial partially mediates the relationship between ad avoidance and its three determinants (Advertising invasiveness, Perceived Value value and Expectation of Negative), perceived space invasiveness has the most potent effect on pawn ad avoidance. Skeptical customers are more likely to avoid pawnbroking advertisements than those who perceive such ads as controversial. The results also show that ethical judgement moderates both the relationship of perceived controversial ads and ad avoidance and the relationship between ad skepticism and ad avoidance. Implications - Social media platform owners were suggested to reinforce their censoring system and advertising placements. Marketers in this study were convinced to generate advertisements with emotional and informative appeals. Besides, appropriate marketing activities, channels, and ad formats with campaigns should be considered strictly. Originality/value - The mediating role of attitude in the relationship between perception and ad avoidance has been firstly affirmed by qualitative data in this study. Interestingly, researchers explored a new variable - Negative eWOM with a medium impact of ad skepticism. Ethical judgement was demonstrated as a drastically important factor in pawnbroking research.

Understanding how to more effectively advertise is an important area for practitioners, many of whom are struggling to stay in business. Nowadays, both product and corporate branding are important and given the increase in online advertising, additional research to better understand advertising avoidance is needed. Most advertising avoidance studies to date measure either task attention or attention to advertising. This paper contributes to a more holistic view of attention by examining two distinct online tasks, such as reading information and buying products, and two forms of advertising, such as product brand advertisements and corporate brand advertisements. An eye-tracking experiment with 121 respondents show that when reading, users look more at advertisements that increase the memory of the ads. Regardless of the task performed, the corporate brand ads are more memorable than the product brand ads even if the product ads attract more attention. The longer the user stays on a website, the more the user will look at the ads and the easier it will be to remember them. However, ads are considered to be distractors for online users, therefore, to increase their effectiveness they must be more engaging and provide value for the audience.

Location-based Advertising (LBA) is a marketing strategy using cellular devices such as smartphones to offer products to potential customers at the nearest sales or service location. Intrusiveness and irritation are disorders that appear in the LBA. The conceptual framework of the research is built on the Advertising Avoidance Theory. Data collection was carried out with a self-administered survey involving 356 Politeknik Pos Indonesia students. The results showed that Intrusiveness and Irritation had a positive and significant effect on consumer attitudes toward LBA messages. Meanwhile, Intrusiveness has a negative and significant impact on consumer purchase intention, while irritation has a positive and significant impact on purchase intention. The more positive consumer attitudes towards LBA, the more positive the consumer's intention to buy.

The increase in internet users has made marketers move to online media. The existence of adertisements in online media has the potential to disturb consumers and cause them to avoid advertising. The purpose of this study is to find out the factors that marketers need to pay attention to in marketing their products so that the level of advertising avoidance is low. This study uses a quantitative survey, by distributing 200 questionnaires to Instagram users who have seen paid advertisements. This study uses SEM analysis techniques with the results showing that the level of ad relevance is one of the important things that must be considered by marketers, while the level of ad salience has no effect on advertising avoidance. The results also indicate the effect of ad relevance and ad salience towards advertising avoidance. The results of this study suggest that marketers need to pay attention to the level of relevance of advertisements with their users in making advertisements and also pay attention to the level of disruption of advertising by creating ads that do not interfere with someone's attention in conducting online activities.
