Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of applying witch hazel oil on damaged hair.Methods: Adding 2, 4, and 6 g of witch hazel oil, applied to a sample of hairs bleached at level eight, produced formulations intended to enhance hair quality. This sample was compared with a cohort of damaged hair. Lightness (L*) value was measured using a color meter to identify changes in the brightness of the hair sample. In addition, tensile strength, absorbance using methylene blue, and glossiness were measured to verify improvement in damaged hair.Results: The mean L* values of the hairs in the sample were higher when compared with those of healthy hair. However, this effect declined with increased oil dosage. Moreover, no statistically significant difference was observed between damaged hair and the sample. After applying the oil, the mean values for tensile strength in the sample increased in comparison with those of the hair in the damaged hair cohort. However, significant differences were noted for hairs 8L(2), 8L(4), and 8L(6) from the sample. The mean values for absorbance decreased in all the hairs sampled, with significant differences noted for hairs 8L(2), 8L(4), and 8L(6) from the sample. Another measure is glossiness, the mean values of which increased for hairs 8L(2), 8L(4), and 8L(6) from the sample with significant differences.Conclusion: Significant differences in the mean values for tensile strength, absorbance, and glossiness were observed in hairs from the sample treated with varying doses of witch hazel oil, which indicates that the oil can improve the quality of damaged hair. However, we recommend that further studies be conducted to determine improvements in damaged hair using a variety of oils and natural extracts.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a systemic chronic bone metabolic disease caused by the imbalance between bone formation and bone resorption mediated by estrogen deficiency. Both exercise and natural extracts are safe and effective means to prevent and control PMOP. The additive effect of exercise synergy extract against PMOP may be no less than that of traditional medicine. However, the mechanism of action of this method has not been clarified in detail. A large number of studies have shown that the pathogenesis of PMOP mainly involves the OPG-RANKL-RANK system, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Based on the abovementioned approaches, the present study reviews the anti-PMOP effects and mechanisms of exercise and natural extracts. Finally, it aims to explore the possibility of the target of the two combined anti-PMOP through this approach, thereby providing a new perspective for joint intervention research and providing a new direction for the treatment strategy of PMOP.

Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most damaging pests in maize crops. In order to manage it, synthetic insecticides such as diamides, neonicotinoids, and pyrethroids are used, but they present a risk for humans and the environment. Investigations of safer alternatives include the use of natural extracts. Thus, this research evaluated the effects of chloroform extract (CHCl3Sc) (5000, 4000, 2000, 1000, and 500 ppm) on aerial parts of Salvia connivens and of nonanal and pyrocatechol (1000, 600, 400, and 80 ppm) on S. frugiperda mortality, duration of the larva and pupae phases, and pupae weight after 24 h. The second instars of S. frugiperda larvae were fed an artificial diet incorporating the extract and compounds. The CHCl3Sc had insecticidal activity against S. frugiperda, showing an LC50 of 1504 ppm. Insectistatic activity began at 1000 ppm, increasing pupal and larval duration in 7.6 and 1.4 days, respectively. Pyrocatechol and nonanal were found in this extract. The first did not have any significant difference in larval or pupal mortalities. On the other hand, insectistatic activity was shown at 500 ppm, increasing the larval duration by 1.7 days compared with the control. In the case of nonanal, the insecticide activity was LC50 of 200 ppm, and insectistatic activity started at 80 ppm, increasing larval duration by 3.2 days compared with the control and reducing pupal weight by 3.4%. The results show that chloroformic extract had insecticidal and insectistatic activities against S. frugiperda; nonanal was an aldehyde compound present in this extract, which confers insecticidal and insectistatic activities against this pest.

The aim of this study was to develop a new hybrid biomaterial that could photo-stabilize and improve the photoprotective capacity of a Baccharis antioquensis extract. Different combinations of lignin/gelatin/natural extract were applied to prepare hybrid biomaterial nanoparticles (NPs), which were then incorporated into an emulsion. The in vitro photoprotection and photostability were evaluated. The methanolic extract showed high phenolic content (646.4 ± 9.5 mg GAE/g dry extract) and a DPPH radical assay revealed that the antiradical capacity of the extract (0.13 to 0.05 g extract/mmol DPPH) was even better than that of BHT. The particle size of the hybrid biomaterial ranged from 100 to 255 nm; a polydispersity index (PdI) between 0.416 and 0.788 is suitable for topical use in dermocosmetic products. The loading capacity of the extract ranged from 27.0 to 44.5%, and the nanoparticles (NPs) showed electrostatic stability in accordance with the zeta potential value. We found that the formulation based on lignin: extract (1:1 ratio) and gelatin: lignin: extract (0.5:0.5:1 ratio) demonstrated photoprotection qualities with a sun protection factor (SPF) ranging from 9.4 to 22.6. In addition, all the hybrid NP-formulations were time-stable with %SPFeff and %UVAPFeff greater than 80% after exposure to 2 h of radiation. These results suggest that the hybrid biopolymer-natural extract improved the photoprotection and photostability properties, as well as the antiradical capacity, of the B. antioquensis extract, and may be useful for trapping high polyphenol content from natural extracts, with potential application in cosmeceutical formulations.

Infrastructures in coastal area are mostly made of metal which is susceptible to corrosion due to direct contact with the seawater. The Seawater greatly affects the corrosion rate of metals because it contains chloride ions which can penetrate metal surface. The process of corrosion can be inhibited or slowed by decreasing the corrosion rate in one way, namely the addition of corrosion inhibitors derived from natural materials containing tannin compounds. This study proposed organic corrosion inhibitors which were derived from natural material extracts (coffee leaves and catappa leaves), the effect of time variations on the efficiency of organic inhibitors was investigated, and the efficiency of each inhibitor organic was compared. The corrosion rate with and without inhibitors was analysed by using the method of weight loss. The results showed that the corrosion rate can be reduced by adding the natural ingredients extract. The addition of 2% concentration coffee leaves extract resulted in the lowest corrosion rate with the addition of 0.00226 mmpy. The addition of catappa leaves extract concentration as much as 2% yield the lowest corrosion rate with the addition of 0.0012 mmpy. The highest efficiency of inhibition system was obtained by using 2% catappa leaves extract at 14 days soaking time at 69.23%, and the lowest by using 1% coffee leaves extract.
