This study investigated the austenite stability and deformation behavior of cyclic quenching-austenite reverse transformation processed Fe-0.25C-3.98Mn-1.22Al-0.20Si-0.19Mo-0.03Nb medium Mn steel. A number of findings were obtained. Most importantly, the extent of the TRIP effect was mainly determined by an appropriately retained austenite stability rather than its content. Simultaneously, chemical elements were the key factors affecting austenite stability, of which Mn had the greatest impact, while the difference of retained austenite grain size and Mn content resulted in different degrees of retained austenite stability. Additionally, there were still large amounts of strip and granular-retained austenite shown in the microstructure of the CQ3-ART sample after tensile fracture, revealing that the excessively stable, retained austenite inhibited the generation of an extensive TRIP effect.

The tensile properties and damping capacity of cold-rolled Fe–20Mn–12Cr–3Ni–3Si alloys were investigated. The martensitic transformation was identified, including surface relief with a specific orientation and partial intersection. Besides, as the cold rolling degree increased, the volume fraction of ε-martensite increased, whereas α’-martensite started to form at the cold rolling degree of 15% and slightly increased to 6% at the maximum cold rolling degree. This difference may be caused by high austenite stability by adding alloying elements (Mn and Ni). As the cold rolling degree increased, the tensile strength linearly increased, and the elongation decreased due to the fractional increment in the volume of martensite. However, the damping capacity increased until a 30% cold rolling degree was approached, and then decreased. The irregular tendency of the damping capacity was confirmed, depicting that it increased to a specific degree and then decreased as the tensile strength and elongation increased. Concerning the relationship between the tensile properties and the damping capacity, the damping capacity increased and culminated, and then decreased as the tensile properties and elongation increased. The damping capacity in the high-strength area tended to decrease because it is difficult to dissipate vibration energy into thermal energy in alloys with high strength. In the low-strength area, on the other hand, the damping capacity increased as the strength increased since the increased volume fraction of ε-martensite is attributed to the increase in the damping source.

Additions of 3 and 5 wt.% Al have been investigated as a low-cost method for transformation acceleration in nano-bainitic steels. For both Al contents, two groups of steels with C-content in the range ~0.7 to ~0.95 wt.% were studied. Thermodynamic and physical simulations were used in alloy and heat treatment design. Characterization was performed via dilatometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and tensile and impact testing. Fast bainitic-transformation time-intervals ranging from 750–4600 s were recorded and tensile strengths up to 2000 MPa at a ductility of ~10 elongation percent were attainable for the 3 wt.% Al group at an austempering temperature of 265 °C. Higher Al additions were found to perform better than their lower Al counterparts as the austempering temperature is dropped. However, Al lowered the austenite stability, increased the martensite start temperature, austenitization temperatures and, consequently, the prior austenite grain size, as well as limiting the austempering temperatures to higher ones. Additionally, the lowered austenite stability coupled with higher additions of hardenability elements (here carbon) to maintain the martensite start at around 300 °C, causing the 5 wt.% Al group to have a large amount of low stability retained austenite (and consequently brittle martensite) in their microstructure, leading to a low elongation of around 5%.
