Understanding sustainability requires a system-wide perspective to guide the interpretation of problems and conceptualization of solutions. A lake sustainability Trust provided an opportunity for students to gain this perspective by examining societal, commercial, and environmental policy perspectives associated with a local endangered lake and surrounding wetlands. This was an ideal project to bring sustainability issues to life for students but was too complex for a single class to attack. This article describes a multicourse initiative that sought to heighten students’ awareness of sustainability issues using a design thinking problem-solving approach. Interviews conducted revealed concerns that educators may have in considering similar projects. The authors respond to these perceived obstacles with recommendations and a discussion of mitigation strategies. In addition to the Trust gaining direction, the design and implementation of this cross-course experiential learning initiative allowed Marketing Research and Product Design students to develop an appreciation for macrolevel sustainability issues, and environmental policy students to appreciate the value of marketing research in the development of land use plans.

<p>Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture that decouples the network control and forwarding functions. In SDN, the functionality of static configuration and routing table in a traditional network has been replaced by forwarding table entries (FTEs). Thus a systematic research on FTE to better monitor traffic and manage networking resources becomes crucial in SDN. There are already some initial works on FTE representation from mathematical/logical perspective. However, they usually concentrate on the abstraction and expression of FTE rather than the applications in real network. Based on existing research, a controller is unable to monitor networking traffic and manage networking resources from a network-wide perspective. To address these challenges, Boolean algebra is chosen and extended in this thesis to examine the relations and manipulations among FTEs together with traffic statistics. Specifically, three SDN applications: i) equivalence evaluation during FTE deployment, ii) non-invasive traffic estimation and iii) anomaly detection, have been proposed and verified with the help of Boolean algebra. All of these applications rely on the mining of the FTEs and their associated statistics, thus no overhead will be introduced to the switch's original packet forwarding functionalities. They can be easily deployed in production networks due to the non-invasive strategy as well as the feasibility and flexibility in real networking scenarios.</p>

Long-read sequencing is driving a new reality for genome science where highly contiguous assemblies can be produced efficiently with modest resources. Genome assemblies from long-read sequencing are particularly exciting for understanding the evolution of complex genomic regions that are often difficult to assemble. In this study, we leveraged long-read sequencing to generate a high-quality genome assembly for an Antarctic eelpout, Opthalmolycus amberensis, the first for the globally distributed family Zoarcidae. We used this assembly to understand how O. amberensis has adapted to the harsh Southern Ocean and compared it to another group of Antarctic fishes: the notothenioids. We showed that from a genome-wide perspective, selection has largely acted on different targets in eelpouts relative to notothenioids. However, we did find some overlap; in both groups, selection has acted on genes involved in membrane structure and DNA repair. We found evidence for historical shifts of transposable element activity in O. amberensis and other polar fishes, perhaps reflecting a response to environmental change. We were specifically interested in the evolution of two complex genomic regions known to underlie key adaptations to polar seas: hemoglobin and antifreeze proteins (AFPs). We observed unique evolution of the hemoglobin MN cluster in eelpouts and related fishes in the suborder Zoarcoidei relative to other teleosts. For AFPs, we identified the first species in the suborder with no evidence of afpIII sequences (Cebidichthys violaceus), potentially reflecting a lineage-specific loss of this gene cluster. Beyond polar fishes, our results highlight the power of long-read sequencing to understand genome evolution.

Translation in captivity is nothing new, nor is it restricted to a particular place or historical period. However, this social and cultural phenomenon is marked by a far more frequent occurrence in totalitarian societies. This article examines the practice of literary translation in Soviet labour camps, where, as a result of political repression, Ukrainian scholars, writers, translators, and lexicographers (aka prisoners of conscience) constituted a large part of the incarcerated population. The fact that translation activity thrived behind bars despite brutal and dehumanizing conditions testifies to the phenomenon of cultural resistance and translators’ activism, both of which deserve close scholarly attention. This study provides insights into practical, historical, psychological, and philosophical aspects of translation in extreme conditions. It seeks answers to the questions of why prisoners of conscience felt moved to translate, and how they pursued their work in situations of extreme pressure. Through the lens of translation in prison, the article offers a wide perspective on the issues of retranslation, pseudotranslation, translation editing, text selection, and the functions of literary translation. The focus of the paper is on Soviet Ukraine in the 1970s-80s, when a wave of political repressions led to the appearance of a new generation of prisoners of conscience. Case studies of Vasyl' Stus and Ivan Svitlychnyi are discussed, drawing on their letters during the incarceration period and the memoirs of their inmates.

In this contribution, the main guidelines that, in the opinion of the authors, will address bioinspired technologies in the next future are discussed. The topics are related to some specific subjects. The presented perspectives could be useful to remark how bioinspired technologies can be applied to solve every day problems in a low cost and sustainable way. Moreover, all the considerations reported hallmark the need of changing the paradigm to design innovative bionspired systems. Efficient and alternative bioinspired systems cannot be designed by only looking at macroscopic scale as observed in nature. The efforts of this paper are oriented towards providing a wide perspective on bioinspired technologies as complex systems where nonlinear phenomena are fundamental elements.
