The strong chiral preferences of some magic clusters of amino acids have attracted continually increasing interests due to their unique structures, properties and possible roles in homochirogenesis. However, how chirality can influence the generation and stability of cluster ions in a wild range of cluster sizes is still unknown for most amino acids. In this study, the preference for threonine clusters to form homochiral and heterochiral complex ions has been investigated by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. Abundant cluster [Thrn+mH]m+ ions (7 ≤ n ≤ 78, 1 ≤ m ≤ 5) have been observed for both samples of enantiopure (100% L) and racemic (50:50 L:D) threonine solutions. Further analyses of the spectra show that the [Thr14+2H]2+ ion is characterized by its most outstanding homochiral preference, and [Thr7+H]+ and [Thr8+H]+ ions also clearly exhibit their homochiral preferences. Although most of the triply charged clusters (20 ≤ n ≤ 36) are characterized by heterochiral preferences, the quadruply charged [Thrn+4H]4+ ions (40 ≤ n ≤ 59) have no obvious chiral preference in general. On the other hand, a weak homochiral preference exists for most of the quintuply charged ions observed in the experiment.

A new polymeric NHC carrier was synthesized by sequential supramolecular self-assembly and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) of amphiphilic imidazolium calix[4]arenes with octyl lipophilic fragments. Obtained polytriazole-imidazolium particles were found as monodisperse submicron particles, with the average diameter of 236 ± 34 nm and average molecular weight of 1380 ± 96 kDa. Successful CuAAC polymerization has been proved using IR spectroscopy and high-resolution ESI mass spectrometry. Polymeric particles, as well as aggregates made from precursor macrocycles, were decorated by Pd clusters (2 nm) for further catalytic investigations. Pd nanoclusters, supported on the polymeric surface, were found highly catalytically active in the model reduction of p-nitrophenol, giving reaction rates an order of magnitude higher compared to literature examples. The reaction was recycled using the same catalyst five times without any loss of activity.

Abstract This work proposes a new method for the synthesis of N-borylated amino acids based on nucleophilic substitution reactions in the [B12H11IPh]– anion. Esters of glycine and L-phenylalanine were used as nucleophiles. The structure of the products has been determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and ESI mass spectrometry.

Abstract In this study, chiral bis(pyrazolyl)methane copper(I) acetonitrile complexes were applied to generate two novel terminal copper tosyl nitrene complexes with the nitrene generating agent SPhINTs in dichloromethane at low temperatures. The syntheses of the chiral bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands are based on pulegone and camphor, members of the natural chiral pool. The chiral copper(I) acetonitrile complexes were applied as catalysts in the copper nitrene mediated aziridination reaction of different styrene derivatives and the C–H amination of various substrates. The reactions afforded good yields, but low enantiomeric excess under mild conditions. The nitrene species have been characterized with UV/Vis and EPR spectroscopy and the products of the decay by ESI mass spectrometry.

Three new flavone glycosides, one known flavone glycoside, and the phenolic derivative apiopaenonside were isolated and identified from the ethyl acetate fraction of the aerial parts of Scleranthus perennis. The planar structures were elucidated through extensive analysis of UV-Vis, IR, and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectral data, including the 2D techniques COSY, HSQC, and HMBC, as well as ESI mass spectrometry. The isolated compounds were established as 5,7,3′-trihydroxy-4′-acetoxyflavone-8-C-β-d-xylopyranoside-2′′-O-glucoside (1), 5,7,3′-trihydroxy-4′-methoxyflavone-8-C-β-d-xylopyranoside-2′′-O-glucoside (2), 5,7-dihydroxy-3′-methoxy-4′-acetoxyflavone-8-C-β-d-xylopyranoside-2′′-O-glucoside (3), 5,7-dihydroxy-3′-methoxy-4′-acetoxyflavone-8-C-β-d-xylopyranoside-2′′-O-(4′′′-acetoxy)-glucoside (4), and apiopaenonside (5). Moreover, all isolated compounds were evaluated for anti-collagenase activity. All compounds exhibited moderate inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 36.06 to 70.24 µM.

A decanuclear silver chalcogenide cluster, [Ag10(Se){Se2P(OiPr)2}8] (2) was isolated from a hydride-encapsulated silver diisopropyl diselenophosphates, [Ag7(H){Se2P(OiPr)2}6], under thermal condition. The time-dependent NMR spectroscopy showed that 2 was generated at the first three hours and the hydrido silver cluster was completely consumed after thirty-six hours. This method illustrated as cluster-to-cluster transformations can be applied to prepare selenide-centered decanuclear bimetallic clusters, [CuxAg10-x(Se){Se2P(OiPr)2}8] (x = 0–7, 3), via heating [CuxAg7−x(H){Se2P(OiPr)2}6] (x = 1–6) at 60 °C. Compositions of 3 were accurately confirmed by the ESI mass spectrometry. While the crystal 2 revealed two un-identical [Ag10(Se){Se2P(OiPr)2}8] structures in the asymmetric unit, a co-crystal of [Cu3Ag7(Se){Se2P(OiPr)2}8]0.6[Cu4Ag6(Se){Se2P(OiPr)2}8]0.4 ([3a]0.6[3b]0.4) was eventually characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Even though compositions of 2, [3a]0.6[3b]0.4 and the previous published [Ag10(Se){Se2P(OEt)2}8] (1) are quite similar (10 metals, 1 Se2−, 8 ligands), their metal core arrangements are completely different. These results show that different synthetic methods by using different starting reagents can affect the structure of the resulting products, leading to polymorphism.

Abstract A new multistage synthesis of the N-borylated dipeptide B12-PheGlyOH has been proposed. The approach is based on the reaction of nucleophilic addition of amino acid derivatives to the [B12H11NCCH3]– anion. The products of each stage have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, IR absorption spectroscopy, and ESI mass spectrometry.

We report the effect of thermolysis time on the morphological and optical properties of CuS nanoparticles prepared from Cu(II) dithiocarbamate single-source precursor. The as-prepared copper sulfide nanoparticles were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and a ternary mixture of the three dyes (CV/MB/RhB). Powder XRD patterns confirmed the hexagonal covellite phase for the CuS nanoparticles. At the same time, HRTEM images revealed mixed shapes with a particle size of 31.47 nm for CuS1 prepared at 30 min while CuS2 prepared at 1 h consists of mixtures of hexagonal and nanorods shaped particles with an average size of 21.59 nm. Mixed hexagonal and spherically shaped particles with a size of 17.77 nm were obtained for CuS3 prepared at 2 h. The optical bandgaps of the nanoparticles are 3.00 eV for CuS1, 3.26 eV for CuS2 and 3.13 eV for CuS3. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency showed that CuS3 with the smallest particle size is the most efficient photocatalyst and degraded 85% of CV, 100% of MB, and 81% of RhB. The as-prepared CuS showed good stability and recyclability and also degraded ternary dyes mixture (CV/MB/RhB) effectively. The byproducts of the dye degradation were evaluated using ESI-mass spectrometry.

A series of thiosemicarbazone-coumarin hybrids (HL1-HL3 and H2L4) has been synthesised in 12 steps and used for the preparation of mono- and dinuclear copper(II) complexes, namely Cu(HL1)Cl2 (1), Cu(HL2)Cl2 (2), Cu(HL3)Cl2 (3) and Cu2(H2L4)Cl4 (4), isolated in hydrated or solvated forms. Both the organic hybrids and their copper(II) and dicopper(II) complexes were comprehensively characterised by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, i.e., elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR, IR and UV–vis spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and spectroelectrochemistry (SEC). Re-crystallisation of 1 from methanol afforded single crystals of copper(II) complex with monoanionic ligand Cu(L1)Cl, which could be studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). The prepared copper(II) complexes and their metal-free ligands revealed antiproliferative activity against highly resistant cancer cell lines, including triple negative breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231, sensitive COLO-205 and multidrug resistant COLO-320 colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines, as well as in healthy human lung fibroblasts MRC-5 and compared to those for triapine and doxorubicin. In addition, their ability to reduce the tyrosyl radical in mouse R2 protein of ribonucleotide reductase has been ascertained by EPR spectroscopy and the results were compared with those for triapine.
