A series of thiosemicarbazone-coumarin hybrids (HL1-HL3 and H2L4) has been synthesised in 12 steps and used for the preparation of mono- and dinuclear copper(II) complexes, namely Cu(HL1)Cl2 (1), Cu(HL2)Cl2 (2), Cu(HL3)Cl2 (3) and Cu2(H2L4)Cl4 (4), isolated in hydrated or solvated forms. Both the organic hybrids and their copper(II) and dicopper(II) complexes were comprehensively characterised by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, i.e., elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, 1D and 2D NMR, IR and UV–vis spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and spectroelectrochemistry (SEC). Re-crystallisation of 1 from methanol afforded single crystals of copper(II) complex with monoanionic ligand Cu(L1)Cl, which could be studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). The prepared copper(II) complexes and their metal-free ligands revealed antiproliferative activity against highly resistant cancer cell lines, including triple negative breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231, sensitive COLO-205 and multidrug resistant COLO-320 colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines, as well as in healthy human lung fibroblasts MRC-5 and compared to those for triapine and doxorubicin. In addition, their ability to reduce the tyrosyl radical in mouse R2 protein of ribonucleotide reductase has been ascertained by EPR spectroscopy and the results were compared with those for triapine.

AbstractAmmonium benzyldithiocarbamate, represented as NH4L, was prepared and used in the complexation reaction involving three organotin(iv) salts, represented as R2SnCl2 (R = CH3, C4H9, and C6H5). The structures of the synthesized complexes [(CH3)2SnL2] (1), [(C4H9)2SnL2] (2), and [(C6H5)2SnL2] (3) were established using various spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and 119Sn NMR) and elemental analysis. Thermal decomposition of the complexes using thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen showed no definite pathway in the pattern of the complexes even though they are structurally related. X-ray diffraction studies of the final residue showed a common diffraction pattern for the complexes and confirmed SnS as the product of the thermal treatment. Cytotoxicity studies of these complexes against the human tumor cell lines (HeLa and MCF-7) compared favorably with the used standard 5-fluorouracil drug, with complexes 2 and 3 showing very good activity toward the used cell lines.

A new (1) and a known (2) β-dihydroagarofuran sesquiterpene polyol esters were isolated from Celastrus rosthornianus and their structures were established by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic techniques. The two compounds exhibited anti-tumor activities against a panel of human tumor cell lines.

A new pyrrolidine derivative, 3-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)-4-(4′-hydroxyphenoxy)pyrrolidin-2-one (1), and eight known steroids, (22 E,24 R)-7β,8β-epoxy-3β,5α,9α-trihydroxyergosta-22-en-6-one (2, a reassigned structure of (22 E,24 R)-5α,6α-epoxy-3β,8β,14α-trihydroxyergosta-22-en-7-one), (22 E,24 R)-3β,5α,9α-trihydroxyergosta-7,22-dien-6-one (3), (22 E,24 R)-3β,5α-dihydroxyergosta-7,22-dien-6-one (4), (22 E,24 R)-ergosta-7,22-dien-3β,5α,6β-triol (5), (22 E,24 R)-ergosta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (6), (22 E,24 R)-5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-ol (7), (22 E,24 R)-5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,9(11),22-trien-3β-ol (8), and (22 E,24 R)-1(10→6)- abeo-ergosta-5,7,9,22-tetraen-3α-ol (9), were isolated from the cultures of Gibberella zeae, an endophytic fungus isolated from the marine green alga Codium fragile. Their structures and relative stereochemistry were elucidated by 1D, 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques. Compound 1 showed cytotoxicity against A-549 and BEL-7402 cell lines.

The structure of peucedanin, isolated from Peucedanum tauricum Bieb. (Apiaceae), has been established using single crystal X-ray diffraction. This furanocoumarin isolated from the light petroleum extract of P. tauricum fruits was characterized by high resolution EI-MS, sATR-FTIR and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques. The EI-MS showed the typical fragmentation pattern of methoxyfuranocoumarins. Extensive 1D (1H and 13C) as well as 2D NMR data enabled complete assignment of the carbon atoms in the peucedanin molecule. The FTIR data confirms intermolecular hydrogen bonding between peucedanin molecules in polar solvents. Peucedanin crystallises in the R-3 space group from the trigonal system with one molecule in the asymmetric part of the unit cell. The crystal lattice of peucedanin consists of the molecules arranged in separate columns. They are related by two fold screw axes and centres of symmetry. Interestingly, peucedanin columns form two channels per unit cell with a diameter of 7.5Å going through the crystal lattice in the Z-direction. These channels are filled with disordered water molecules, which are surrounded by hydrophobic methyl groups and are located exactly at the centres of the channels. The peucedanin molecules are stacked in a single column with the opposite orientation of the neighbouring molecules. These results could be interesting in further application of this molecule, for example in biological tests of its activity.

N-acylhydrazones 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-N0 -(2-hydroxybenzylidene)acetohydrazide, N0 -(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)acetohydrazide, 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-N0 -(2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)-acetohydrazide, and N0 -(2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)acetohydrazide were successfully synthesized by a multistep procedure. The obtained organic molecules were characterized by spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, 1D and 2D NMR, UV-Vis) and mass spectrometry. The structure of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-N0 -(2-hydroxybenzylidene)acetohydrazide was also confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Ab initio computational simulations of the ligand spectra were in good agreement with experimental data and validated the hypothesis about the existence of a conformational mixture of each ligand in solution. Finally, the complexation potential of the synthesized ligands to Cu2+ was assessed by continuous variation experiments and FT-IR spectroscopy.

:Here in we report the number of strategies for the synthesis of differently substituted benzimidazole derivatives. The protocols involved in the syntheses of these derivatives were one-pot or multi-component. The characterization studies of these derivatives were carried by using different spectroscopic techniques (1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS) and elemental analyses. The biological screening studies revealed that these benzimidazole derivatives show potential antibacterial as well as antifungal behavior. These benzimidazole derivatives not only depicted potential antiulcer properties but also showed moderate to good anticancer/cytotoxic behavior against different cancer cell lines.

Aim and Objective: Formation of the gallbladder stones is a common disease and a major health problem. The present study aimed to identify the structures of the most common types of gallbladder stones using X-ray spectroscopic techniques, which provide information about the process of stone formation. Material and Method: Phase and elemental compositions of pure cholesterol and mixed gallstones removed from gallbladders of patients were studied using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy combined with scanning electron microscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction. Results: The crystal structures of gallstones which coincide with standard patterns were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Plate-like cholesterol crystals with laminar shaped and thin layered structures were clearly observed for gallstone of pure cholesterol by scanning electron microscopy; it also revealed different morphologies from mixed cholesterol stones. Elemental analysis of pure cholesterol and mixed gallstones using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the different formation processes of the different types of gallstones. Conclusion: The method of fast and reliable X-ray spectroscopic techniques has numerous advantages over the traditional chemical analysis and other analytical techniques. The results also revealed that the X-ray spectroscopy technique is a promising technique that can aid in understanding the pathogenesis of gallstone disease.

In this report, two new steroidal glycosides were isolated and determined from n-butanol fraction of A.asphodeloides. The structures were confirmed in comparison with the spectral data of known compounds by using different spectroscopic analysis approaches including 1D & 2D-NMR techniques and HRMS. The anti-proliferation screening against cancer cell lines A549 and HeLa indicated that compound 1 exhibited good inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 0.79 and 0.55 µg/mL, respectively.
