Objective. To detect the carrier rates of deafness gene variants in populations in Ningbo and analyze the risk of hereditary hearing loss through concurrent hearing and genetic screening tests. Methods. Two thousand one hundred and seventy-four newborns were enrolled from November 2018 to August 2019. All subjects underwent hearing screening and newborn deafness genetic screening with 15 variants in 4 genes, and the positive sites were simultaneously verified by sequencing. Results. The total carrier rate of genetic variants in Ningbo reached 4.32%, when GJB2 c.235delC was the variant with the highest prevalence (2.12%), approximately accounting for 48.9% of the total carrier frequency. The carrier frequency of SLC26A4 c.919-2A>G was 0.87%, while the most common variant in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) MT-RNR1 gene was m.1555A>G, and its carrier frequency was 0.184%. In the OAE testing, 92 newborns passing hearing screening were tested positively for variants in 4 genes, and 2 of 42 newborns who failed in the first hearing test were found to mutate in 4 genes. Conclusion. Herein, the results concerning the carrier rates for deafness gene mutations of Ningbo population are reported. Our study is beneficial to the insight into the deafness genomic epidemiology for deafness genes in Ningbo population and provides the reference for healthcare in Ningbo.

Research on the acquisition of suprasegmental sounds in Japanese has been carried out both in terms of production and perception. The conducted research shows that there are difficulties in acquiring Japanese sounds. This study focused on the perception of Japanese accents, with the aim of describing the learner’s ability to identify Japanese accent patterns. The data sources of this research are Japanese learners at beginner level. Data were collected using a test instrument, through a hearing test, in the form of a set of words which selected based on the category of words and patterns of Japanese accents to be measured by listening and recording techniques. The results showed that based on the results of the hearing test, of the 17 participants who completed the test reached the highest score 47.14 (S01), and the lowest score of 15.41 (S14), with an overall average score of 29.16 and Standard Deviation (SD) 7.9018. These scores represent the participants’ ability to identify Japanese accent patterns is in the very low category. The results indicate that the learners have difficulty identifying Japanese accent patterns. In fact, the vocabulary in research instrument was the basic vocabulary that had been learned by them. It can be concluded that the acquisition of vocabulary is not in line with the suprasegmental elements attached to these words. The results of this research need to be continued by applying listening exercises of Japanese accent.

Abstract Background Combining a mobile application-based vestibular diary called the DizzyQuest and an iPad-based hearing test enables evaluation of the relationship between experienced neuro-otological symptoms and hearing thresholds in daily life setting. The aim was to investigate the relationship between self-reported hearing symptoms and hearing thresholds in patients with Meniere’s disease (MD), using the DizzyQuest and the iPad-based hearing test simultaneously. Methods The DizzyQuest was administered for 3 weeks in 21 patients. Using the experience-sampling-method (ESM), it assessed hearing loss and tinnitus severity for both ears separately. Each day after the DizzyQuest, an iPad-based hearing test was used to measure hearing thresholds. A mixed model regression analysis was performed to investigate relationships between hearing thresholds and self-reported hearing loss and tinnitus severity. Results Fifteen patients were included. Overall, pure-tone averages (PTAs) were not correlated with self-reported hearing loss severity and tinnitus. Individual differences in PTA results between both ears did not significantly influence the difference in self-reported hearing loss severity between both ears. Self-reported hearing loss and tinnitus scores were significantly higher in ears that corresponded with audiometric criteria of MD (p < 0.001). Self-reported tinnitus severity significantly increased with self-reported hearing loss severity in affected (p = 0.011) and unaffected ears (p < 0.001). Conclusion Combining the DizzyQuest and iPad-based hearing test, facilitated assessment of self-reported hearing loss and tinnitus severity and their relationship with hearing thresholds, in a daily life setting. This study illustrated the importance of investigating neuro-otological symptoms at an individual level, using multiple measurements. ESM strategies like the DizzyQuest should therefore be considered in neuro-otological research.

Abstract Background With the evolving knowledge on hearing as a potentially modifiable mid-life risk factor for dementia, identification of people at risk becomes increasingly important. People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) presenting to specialist memory services represent a key “at-risk” target population for audiological evaluation, but few services have established this pathway. This study sought to examine the patient experience and understanding of this process. Methods All patients with MCI attending a tertiary referral memory service referred for audiology review were contacted. A patient survey was delivered over the phone. Outpatient letters and the memory clinic database were reviewed. Results Twenty patients with MCI were included in the survey. Eight (8/20, 40%) had self-reported hearing loss. Upon formal audiological assessment seventeen (17/20, 85%) had objective evidence of hearing loss; nine (9/17, 52.9%) with mild-moderate and eight (8/17, 47%) with moderate-severe hearing loss. Only six patients (6/20, 30%) recalled having the rationale behind having a hearing test as part of their memory work-up explained to them. However, the majority (15/20, 75%) felt a hearing test was an important part of their memory assessment. Just seven patients overall (7/20, 35%) identified a link between hearing-loss and cognition. All patients who provided feedback on the service itself made positive comments, although (4/20, 20%) felt they did not get adequate information about the results. Conclusions A significant proportion of people with MCI had de-novo evidence of hearing impairment upon assessment. Patients are satisfied with incorporating audiological evaluation into a memory clinic assessment, however clear communication around indication, recommendations, and follow-up ensuring compliance is required.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018 reported that the prevalence for children under five with growth and development disorders was 28.7%, and Indonesia was included in the third country with the highest prevalence in the Southeast Asia region. As such, monitoring child growth and development is pivotal to determine necessary intervention and prevention. With technological advancement, monitoring child growth and development has become more accessible. The main objective of this paper is to explain the process of designing an Android software application for anthropometry, hearing test, and visual test to monitor children's developmental status. We employed to research and development methods, including need analysis, data collection, application design, user trial, and evaluation. The findings showed that the application could monitor growth and development in children from the age of zero to 72 months based on anthropometric testing related to auditory and visual stimulation in children. The application is useful in detecting the growth and development of children based on the results of the child's stimulation response. Based on the results of user trials by medical experts, parents, technological experts, it can be concluded that the software is applicable in monitoring the status of children's growth and development.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to validate a novel iPad-based rapid hearing loss screening tool (SHOEBOX QuickTest) in individuals with cognitive impairment.Design: Cross-sectional validation study.Setting: Bruyère Research Institute, Ottawa, Canada.Subjects and Methods: Twenty-five individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia from the Bruyère Memory Program were included in this study. The study consisted of two components: (1) SHOEBOX QuickTest hearing screener and (2) a conventional hearing test (pure tone audiometry).Measurements: Hearing was assessed at 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz separately for each ear. The agreement between hearing ability groupings (good vs. reduced) from conventional hearing test and SHOEBOX QuickTest was determined. Specifically, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, as well as alignment between conventional thresholds and hearing threshold ranges.Results: An overall accuracy of 84% was observed for SHOEBOX QuickTest, and a sensitivity and specificity of 100 and 66.7%, respectively. 72% ([95% CI], 60.0–84.1%) of conventional audiometry thresholds were within the pre-established 10 dB SHOEBOX QuickTest.Conclusion: SHOEBOX QuickTest is a valid hearing loss screening tool for individuals with cognitive impairment. Implementing this iPad-based screening tool in memory clinics could not only aid in the timely diagnosis of hearing loss, but also assist physicians in providing a better assessment of cognitive impairment by ruling out hearing loss as a confounding variable.

With the aging of the world population, age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) and other hearing disorders such as tinnitus become more prevalent, leading to reduced quality of life and social isolation. Unveiling the genetic and environmental factors leading to age-related auditory disorders could suggest lifestyle and therapeutic interventions to slow auditory aging. In the following, we built the first machine learning-based hearing age predictor by training models to predict chronological age from hearing test results (root mean squared error=7.10+/-0.07 years; R-Squared=31.4+/-0.8%). We defined hearing age as the prediction outputted by the model on unseen samples, and accelerated auditory aging as the difference between a participant's hearing age and age. We then performed a genome wide association study [GWAS] and found that accelerated hearing aging is 14.1+/-0.4% GWAS-heritable. Specifically, accelerated auditory aging is associated with 662 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 243 genes (e.g OR2B4P, involved in smell perception). Similarly, it is associated with biomarkers (e.g cognitive tests), clinical phenotypes (e.g chest pain), diseases (e.g depression), environmental (e.g smoking, sleep) and socioeconomic (e.g income, education, social support) variables. The hearing age predictor could be used to evaluate the efficiency of emerging rejuvenation therapies on hearing.

Purpose: The hearing condition of pilots and the level of noise of helicopter were of interest. This study aimed to analyze the noise environment and hearing loss of the pilots of Korean army aviation.Methods: A total of 242 pilots who did not have any middle ear problems or other ear diseases were selected: 34, 69, 70, and 69 from the age group 20, 30, 40, and 50, respectively. The physical examination records of hearing test from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. The noise environment was measured at the two indoor positions of pilot and crew and one outside position which was 1 m away from the 8 helicopters owned by Korean army aviation: 500MD, UH-1H, UH-60, KUH-1, AH-1S, BO-105, CH-47, AH-64.Results: The thresholds of pilots were statistically different in term of frequency, age, and flight time (<i>p</i> < 0.05). The range of measured noise level of helicopters at the position of pilot, crew, and outside were 88.6 (AH-1S)-104.1 dB A (CH-47), 93.9 (UH-1H)-108.6 dB A (CH-47), 105 (500MD, AH-1S)-109 dB A (AH-64). When compared hearing thresholds of the pilots to normal groups according to age groups, they were higher at 6 kHz and lower at 0.5 kHz for all age groups.Conclusion: The hearing thresholds of Korean army aviation pilots increased as age and flight time were increased while showing the typical noise-induced hearing loss with high frequency involvement. We suggest that hearing protection education should be provided and the appropriate hearing conservation program should be established for pilot hearing health care in the future.
