In recent years it has been observed that insulation failure in electrical motors is caused by adjustable speed drives fed by power electronic converters. These converters produce impulse waveforms having a high slew rate generated by the high switching frequency of IGBTs. This paper focuses on high switching frequency stress in low voltage electrical motors for adjustable speeds. To examine the motor winding insulation under such stress twisted-pair samples were developed from enameled wires. A single-coated polyester of enamel with a thickness of 40 microns is used for this work. High-frequencies, high voltages of Square, and Square-rising, Square-spike waveforms of 10-30 kHz are used here. The test results show that the insulation fails earlier for the Square waveform compared to the Square-spike and Square-rising waveforms. In a nutshell, there is an analysis of PD formation in the insulation system at a higher switching frequency is analyzed. Electric field distributions between twisted pairs with various air gaps of the insulation system stressed by the Square and Square-rising waveforms up to 30 kHz are modeled using COMSOL software.

Transient voltage generated in ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission system has a severe impact on the insulation state of gas-insulated transmission lines (GIL). In order to monitor the transient voltage process occurring in UHV GIL during operation, this paper constructs a transient voltage ultra-wideband (UWB) online monitoring system based on capacitive voltage division. This system has been applied in an 1100 kilovolt (kV) GIL utility tunnel project. It can be used to analyze the characteristics of the recorded transient voltage waveforms for distinguishing different types of insulation failure. In this paper, through the case studies in time domain and time–frequency domain, the case of SF6 gap breakdown and that of post insulator flashover have differentiated characteristics in instantaneous frequency. Additionally, a case of secondary discharge is successfully estimated through the time–frequency distribution of the transient voltage. In order to find the malfunctioning chamber of GIL rapidly, a two-terminal TW-based fault location method based on this monitoring system is developed in this paper. The case study validates the locating accuracy which directly support for shortening the maintenance time of GIL.

As a key component of a high-power microwave (HPM) system, a multi-gap gas switch (MGS) has recently developed insulation failure due to surface flashover. Although design criteria for surface insulation have been put forward, it is still not clear how the insulation in this case deteriorated under long-term repetitive microsecond pulses (RMPs). In this paper, flashover experiments under RMPs were carried out on various dielectric surfaces between parallel-plane electrodes in SF6 and air atmospheres, respectively. Based on tests of the surface insulation lifetime (SIL), an empirical formula for SIL prediction is proposed with variations of insulator work coefficient λ, which is a more suitable parameter to characterize SIL under RMPs. Due of the accumulation effect, the relationship between E/p and ptdelay varies with the pulse repetitive frequency (PRF) and SIL recovery capability decreases with an increase in PRF and surface deterioration is exacerbated during successive flashovers. It is concluded that the flashover path plays a crucial role in surface insulation performance under RMPs due to the photoemission induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, signifying the necessity of reducing surface paths in future designs as well as the improvement of surface insulation.

This study investigates the influence of the stator’s turn-to-turn failures (TTFs) on the electromagnetic (EM) fields, such as air gap flux density, flux density in the stator, and rotor iron core inside of direct self-control (DSC) driven induction machines (IMs). The purpose of the investigation is to capture the fault signatures in the air gap EM flux for detecting the stator’s fault at its embryonic stage.

One of the most frequent faults in PMSM stator is the turn-to-turn short-circuit fault. So, the aim of this paper is to present a dynamic model for PMSM with turn-to-turn short-circuit fault based on equivalent electric circuit model. Two simple and useful diagnostic techniques ESA an EPVA based on frequency analysis are applied to detect this kind of fault. The accuracy of diagnosis is based on adding the real waveform of back-EMF.

The transformer is very expensive and bulky power system equipment. It runs and feed the load for 24 hours a day. Sometimes the load on the transformer unexpectedly rises above its rated capacity in that situation the load on the transformer increases and it will be overloaded and current will increase and cause overheating which in results damage the insulation of transformer. That insulation failure resulting in interruption of power supply. The common problems which transformer face is overloading voltage fluctuations and heating effect. It takes lot of time to fix the transformer so that a device need to be introduced a device which would help in automatically sharing of these over voltages. We will try to build an automated transformer sharing system in this project where the transformer current is confined to auxiliary transformer and automatically enters system. There are three transformers working as sources in this project, initially when the main switched ON the load that time load will be shared through the first transformer but when the load on first transformer suddenly increase above its reference value then immediately second transformer connected parallel with first transformer automatically through PLC by busing relay circuit.

Electromagnetic coils are one of the key components of many systems. Their insulation failure can have severe effects on the systems in which coils are used. This paper focuses on insulation degradation monitoring and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of electromagnetic coils. First, insulation degradation characteristics are extracted from coil high-frequency electrical parameters. Second, health indicator is defined based on insulation degradation characteristics to indicate the health degree of coil insulation. Finally, an insulation degradation model is constructed, and coil insulation RUL prediction is performed by particle filtering. Thermal accelerated degradation experiments are performed to validate the RUL prediction performance. The proposed method presents opportunities for predictive maintenance of systems that incorporate coils.
