A Kentucky coal sample treated by microwave irradiation (MI) combined with sodium hydroxide solution was performed using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) coupled to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The combustion properties and structural changes of coal under different conditions were investigated and compared. The results show that the desulfurization efficiency of coal samples increases with the increase of sodium hydroxide solution concentration. Microwave irradiation can significantly improve the desulfurization efficiency. The whole combustion process of the treated coal sample becomes longer; the combustion performance becomes worse. The total mass loss of coal treated samples is significantly reduced, and the temperature corresponding to the maximum weight loss rate decreases with the increase of sodium hydroxide concentration. The infrared spectra of the coal samples treated with microwave and 5% sodium hydroxide solution were basically unchanged, while the O containing groups and aromatic C-H groups increased in the coal samples treated with 20% sodium hydroxide solution.

The deflector and the rod bank are commonly used to optimize flue gas distribution in the original spray tower (OST) of a wet flue gas desulfurization system (WFGD). In this paper, the internal optimization mechanism of the deflector desulfurization spray tower (DST) and the rod bank desulfurization spray tower (RBST) are studied. Based on the Euler–Lagrange method, the standard k-ε turbulence model, an SO2 absorption model and a porous media model, the numerical simulation of the desulfurization spray tower is carried out with the verification of the model rationality. The results show that there are gas-liquid contact intensification effects in DST and RBST. Compared with OST, gas-liquid contact intensification enhances the heat and mass transfer effects of DST and RBST. The temperature difference between inlet and outlet of flue gas increased by 3.3 K and the desulfurization efficiency of DST increased by 1.8%; the pressure drop decreased by 37 Pa. In RBST, the temperature difference between the flue gas inlet and outlet increased by 5.3 K and the desulfurization efficiency increased by 3.6%; the pressure drop increased by 33 Pa.

A novel method of improving the SO2 absorption performance of sodium citrate (Ci-Na) using sodium humate (HA–Na) as an additive was put forward. The influence of different Ci-Na concentration, inlet SO2 concentration and gas flow rate on desulfurization performance were studied. The synergistic mechanism of SO2 absorption by HA–Na and Ci-Na was also analyzed. The consequence shows that the efficiency of SO2 absorption by Ci-Na is above 90% and the desulfurization time added with the Ci-Na concentration rising from 0.01 to 0.1 mol/L. Both the desulfurization efficiency and time may increase with the adding of HA–Na quality in Ci-Na solution. Due to adding HA–Na, the desulfurization efficiency of Ci-Na increased from 90% to 99% and the desulfurization time increased from 40 to 55 min. Under the optimum conditions, the desulfurization time of Ci-Na can exceed 70 min because of adding HA–Na, which is nearly doubled. The growth of inlet SO2 concentration has little effect on the desulfurization efficiency. The SO2 adsorption efficiency decreases with the increase of inlet flow gas. The presence of O2 improves the SO2 removal efficiency and prolongs the desulfurization time. Therefore, HA–Na plays a key role during SO2 absorption and can dramatically enhance the SO2 adsorption performance of Ci-Na solution.

This research aimed to optimize the experimental conditions of biodesulfurization of sulfide ore and to evaluate the flame-retardant effect after desulfurization under optimal conditions. Six experimental factors were determined: particle size of ore sample, ambient temperature, rotary speed of the shaking table, volume of bacteria liquid, concentration of leaching aid (Tween80), and pH value of acidizing ore sample. Desulfurization efficiency was used as the main characterization index of the desulfurization effect in optimization studies. Particle size of ore sample, rotary speed of the shaking table, and volume of bacteria liquid inoculated were selected as significant factors by a Plackett–Burman experiment. Modeling, optimization, and analysis of the interactive effects of these factors, notably between particle size and bacteria liquid, were performed using a Box–Behnken design with response surface methodology. The optimum operating conditions were found to be: particle size of 120 to 140 mesh, rotary speed of 175 rpm, and bacteria liquid of 111 mL. Under these conditions, a significant rise of 8.1% was seen in 5-day average desulfurization efficiency. The 5-day oxidation weight gain rate of desulfurized ore was 2.73%, while that of the control group was 4.78%. The results show that, after optimized desulfurization, the surface oxidizability and spontaneous combustion tendency of the ore are reduced.
