Testing of the fatigue strength along wood fibres at different moisture contents. The paper determines the effect of wood moisture content on the fatigue strength in compression along fibres. The method of determining the maximum stress at the proportional limit was used for the measurements. Fatigue strength was investigated for three wood species: pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), bearded birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L.), with two moisture contents: close to the absolutely dry state and above the fibre saturation point. The ratio of fatigue strength to short term strength depends on moisture content and is similar for birch (70.3% in the dry state and 72.1% in the wet state), for oak (67.4% and 69.5% in both states) and for spruce (66.6% in the dry state and 68.1% in the wet state). The moisture content of the wood clearly influences the fatigue strength of the wood. On average, the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents above the fibre saturation point constitutes about 0.20 of the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents close to 0%. This tendency was found regardless of the tested species. The simplified method for testing fatigue strength at the limit of proportionality has shown its limited usefulness, requiring further analysis and comparison with other methods in order to be thoroughly tested and possibly improved.

For the first time, using the technology of selective laser sintering, prototypes of rocket engine compressor blades were manufactured with subsequent analysis of the strength, technological, physical and mechanical characteristics of the product. The physical and mechanical properties of the manufactured blades were investigated, it was found that the short-term strength limit at 20 °C is 1450 MPa, and at 300 °C the ultimate strength is 1300 MPa, thus thermal losses in deformation resistance are no more than 12%, which allows the material to be used in aircraft construction, including for supersonic aircraft

In this study, DOL of structural timber and the clear wood and DOL of modulus of elasticity of wood were investigated. The dimension lumber of Spruce-Pine-Fir of Grade No. 2 and Grade No. 3 and the small clear specimens of the same species of the dimension lumber were used to conduct the short-term and the long-term bending test. The short-term strength distributions of the dimension lumber and the small clear specimens were obtained. The long-term tests were conducted under constant environmental conditions for 18 months. The sample matching technique was used to estimate the short-term strength of the specimens that underwent long-term tests. It was found out that there is virtually no difference in DOL between different grades or quality of lumber and no difference between structural timber and clear wood, and DOL obtained from the test of this study is more in agreement with Wood’s curve. A threshold stress ratio of about 0.55, loaded above which the wood began to experience strength loss, was revealed from the test. Making use of the threshold ratio concept, the DOL of wood can be obtained not only from failed specimens under load in the process of the long-term loading, but also from the ramp loading test of the specimens that survived the long-term test. Sustained load also poses DOL on the modulus of elasticity of wood, though to less degree than DOL of strength of wood.

Obesity is closely related to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes genesis. The liver is a key organ to glucose homeostasis since insulin resistance in this organ increases hepatic glucose production (HGP) and fasting hyperglycemia. The protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) may dephosphorylate the IR and IRS, contributing to insulin resistance in this organ. Aerobic exercise is a great strategy to increase insulin action in the liver by reducing the PTP1B content. In contrast, no study has shown the direct effects of strength training on the hepatic metabolism of PTP1B. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of short-term strength exercise (STSE) on hepatic insulin sensitivity and PTP1B content in obese mice, regardless of body weight change. To achieve this goal, obese Swiss mice were submitted to a strength exercise protocol lasting 15 days. The results showed that STSE increased Akt phosphorylation in the liver and enhanced the control of HGP during the pyruvate tolerance test. Furthermore, sedentary obese animals increased PTP1B content and decreased IRS-1/2 tyrosine phosphorylation; however, STSE was able to reverse this scenario. Therefore, we conclude that STSE is an important strategy to improve the hepatic insulin sensitivity and HGP by reducing the PTP1B content in the liver of obese mice, regardless of changes in body weight.

The purpose of the study was to reveal the effect of various technological aspects of manufacturing titanium alloy ВТ8 (VT8) forgings under isothermal conditions on a press with a force of 1600 kN. The starting material was OST 1 90266--86 and OST 1 90107--73 VT8 (ВТ8) alloy bars. For the forgings obtained from these rods, the score and background of the macrostructure, the type of microstructure, short-term strength, elongation, contraction and impact toughness at room temperature were determined. For forgings made from an OST 1 90266--86 bar, the effect of thermomechanical treatment on the level of properties was additionally evaluated, namely, half of the forging was recalibrated. The microstructure of the forgings which were made by thermomechanical treatment and aged was additionally investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Findings of research show a direct dependence of the quality of the final semi-finished product on the quality of the original bar. It has been established that lowering the punching temperature to the level of Tpp -- 150 °С leads to insufficient development of the structure of the deformed material over the cross section, and results in the presence of large grains from the initial bar. So, on forgings made from an OST 1 90266--86 bar, the following level of mechanical properties was achieved: σv ≥ 1000 MPa, δ ≥ 11 %, ψ ≥ 20 %, KCU ≥ 40.3 J / cm2

This paper is devoted to implementing the algorithm for constructing short-term strength curves of wood with biaxial stress states in the radial-tangential plane of structural symmetry. To implement this algorithm was developed software based on the Qt cross-platform toolkit, which allows to build and analyze short-term strength curves in the cross section of wood. The created program has a possibility to choose one of three failure criteria, a kind of wood, temperature and humidity distribution of lumber. The C++ program code is designed so that you can easily add another type of wood as well as a failure criterion. To display the curves, you can select table or graph mode. Graphs can be fixed on a graphics widget, and new ones can be added to compare to previous ones. Based on the analysis of the constructed curves, the ultimate stress state of the material in partial cases is established. In conclusion about expedient using some criteria to describe the strength characteristics of wood with strong and weak asymmetry of strength limits.

Obesity is linked to a reduction in the control of hepatic glucose production, which is the primary mechanism related to fasting hyperglycemia and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The main system involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis synthesis is controlled by pyruvate carboxylase (PC), which increases in obesity conditions. Recently, we showed that short-term strength training is an important tool against obesity-induced hyperglycemia. As aerobic exercise can reduce the hepatic PC content of obese animals, we hypothesized that strength exercise can also decrease this gluconeogenic enzyme. Therefore, this study investigated whether the metabolic benefits promoted by short-term strength training are related to changes in hepatic PC content. Swiss mice were divided into three groups: lean control (Ctl), obese sedentary (ObS), and obese short-term strength training (STST). The STST protocol was performed through one session/day for 15 days. The obese exercised animals had reduced hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. These results were related to better control of hepatic glucose production and hepatic insulin sensitivity. Our bioinformatics analysis showed that hepatic PC mRNA levels have positive correlations with glucose levels and adiposity, and negative correlations with locomotor activity and muscle mass. We also found that hepatic mRNA levels are related to lipogenic markers in the liver. Finally, we observed that the obese animals had an increased hepatic PC level; however, STST was efficient in reducing its amount. In conclusion, we provide insights into new biomolecular mechanisms by showing how STST is an efficient tool against obesity-related hyperglycemia and T2DM, even without body weight changes.
