This qualitative study uses the Job Demands-Resources framework to examine social support and its role in career retention or attrition among Swiss second career teachers (SCTs). In many countries, including Switzerland, great efforts are made to bring professionals from other occupational fields into teaching. As a result, the number of SCTs is growing, as are speculations about their skills, resources, and career persistence. A qualitative content analysis of 23 semi-structured interviews shows that support from colleagues and principals is a crucial job resource for SCTs, but seems to be positively associated with work engagement and career retention only if it is offered in forms that are sensitive to SCTs’ own needs and skills. Implications for SCT training and job induction are discussed.

There are numerous historical and textual references to energy-like somatic experiences (ELSEs) from religious traditions, and even a few psychological studies that have documented related phenomena. However, ELSEs remain an understudied effect of meditation in contemporary research. Based upon narratives from a large qualitative sample of Buddhist meditators in the West reporting meditation-related challenges, this paper offers a unique glimpse into how ELSEs play out in the lives of contemporary meditation practitioners and meditation experts. Departing from studies presuming a “kundalini awakening” framework, this paper presents a broader scope for understanding ELSEs by describing the metaphors practitioners used when speaking about them; the trajectories and impacts of ELSEs, including the factors that were reported as influencing their nature or trajectory; the various ways in which they were interpreted and appraised by practitioners, teachers, and specialists, such as doctors and therapists; and how practitioners responded to them or managed them with particular remedies. Deciding how to interpret and manage ELSEs entailed recruiting frameworks from within and/or beyond the meditator’s specific Buddhist lineage.

From young elite athlete to chronic pain patient. A reflection on working with students as a researcher A qualitative study on the (psychological) characteristics of young, former elite athletes with chronic, non-specific pain complaints was initiated to answer the following questions: (1) Which factors could play a role in the development of chronic, non-specific pain in young, former elite athletes? And (2) How can we optimize treatment for young, former elite athletes with chronic, non-specific pain? A master student in Mental Health first interviewed six young former elite athletes with non-specific pain complaints who were receiving treatment in the rehabilitation clinic. The student analyzed the data. As data analysis based on six interviews is rather limited and the findings did not lead to unambiguous conclusions, several parts of the interview were re-coded by researcher 1, leading to different conclusions. We then decided to re-code all interviews in a new project by researcher 1, have researcher 2 double code several interviews and recruit at least six more participants to expand the qualitative sample. Reflecting on working with students in our qualitative study, we found another researcher coding the interview data to be important as it minimizes interpretation bias and allows for a check of the thoroughness of the interview content. Secondly, master students writing their thesis have limited time for these projects, which may lead to a small number of participants in the study. This holds especially when recruiting from a patient population, as availability depends on the number of suitable patients during this period of time.
