Abstract Background Starting in 2014, homicide rates increased in several US cities, reversing a two-decade downward trend. A number of commentators blamed the events of Ferguson, Missouri, where police killed Michael Brown, leading to protests and greater scrutiny of similar events in other cities. It is still unclear whether effect is causal and what the mechanism would be. Methods Using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting database, I derived 2011-2019 crime data from 44 US cities where protests followed a local police-involved death. The main outcome was homicide. Assaults are potentially similar as a conflict-resolution strategy, though reporting is more discretionary than homicides. Differences in effect between homicide and assault were used as a proxy for underreporting and an indicator legal cynicism. Effects were tested using interrupted time series and combined with meta-analyses. Meta-regressions were used to test the moderating effects of external investigations and sociodemographic factors. Results Homicides increased 26% (99% CI: 15%, 36%). Assaults also increased, though the effect was 15% lower than the homicides (-27%, -4%). No tested factor significantly effects. Conclusions Where police-involved deaths lead to protests, homicide rates increase. The findings support de-legitimisation of police as a causal mechanism, but not de-policing. Key messages Police-involved deaths can lead to increased homicides. Cities where police-community tensions are already high may be particularly vulnerable to homicide rate increases following police-involved deaths.

The current study aims to introduce online social media to support seaweed farmers and as a conflict resolution strategy. Seaweed farmers have the power to develop seaweed because the product has a positive impact on the socioeconomic. This study observes the roles of online media in supporting seaweed production. This research found that an increase in seaweed production can improve the economic conditions of the community. The weaknesses of seaweed farmers are their low capital, low skills, low level of education, and low support for infrastructure. One skill required is the mastery of technology, especially online media. Online media are one of the vital tools that can help seaweed business processes. Therefore, seaweed farmers should know how to use online social media. The potential cultivation of seaweed is very much enhanced by a pattern of cooperation between seaweed farmers, other farmers, and other collaborations. The threats faced by the research area include the diminishing desire of the younger generation to cultivate seaweed, the very low skill related to using online social media, and extreme weather as an annual problem. We find that the role of online media is crucial to minimizing the risk factors for conflict.

Postgraduate education of the resident is the basis of its professional activity, which involves the presence of emotional saturation and a large number of factors that cause stress. Emotional burnout syndrome (CMEA), being the body's reaction to prolonged stressors, is a consequence of psychological overwork. The aim of the study was to study the cognitive resource capabilities of the individual and determine ways to prevent the development of CMEA in 100 residents of surgical and therapeutic specialties using CMEA analysis techniques, assessing conflict and communicative competencies, as well as creativity and creative characteristics of the individual. The comparison group was 30 general practitioners. Evidence has been obtained for hypotheses that CMEA in residents is less pronounced and distributed than in general practitioners; differences in the choice of conflict resolution strategy contribute to the development of CMEA symptoms. The reasons for psychological discomfort of students under residency programmes were revealed. A comparative analysis of conflict competency and symptoms of CMEA, has been carried out. It has been established that conflict competency is manifested as cognitive resource opportunities, the deliberate development of which can serve as a means of preventing CMEA in residents.

The relevance of the study is conditioned by the necessity for formation of theoretical and practical knowledge and technologies that allow to analyze the conditions for overcoming discriminatory affirmations in modern society. The purpose of the research presented in the article is to analyze systematically the conditions for overcoming discriminatory affirmations in modern society. Hypothesis of the study suggests the assumption that in order to identify the conditions for overcoming discriminatory affirmations, a comprehensive study of the conditions of formation is necessary, followed by a search for ways of their transformation. We established that the conditions for formation of discriminatory affirmations include cultural and historical foundations, social environment, mass media, state policy, etc. The following conditions are emphasized: termination of conflict interaction, search for common or similar points of contact of opponents, decrease in the intensity of negative emotions, provision of effective discussion of the problem and choice of an optimal conflict resolution strategy based on the formed discriminatory affirmations. Narrowing the subject field of the study of triggering events, and as a consequence – overcoming discriminatory affirmations through behavior of a person in a conflict situation, will allow us to distinguish two groups: internal and external formation conditions and implementation of discriminatory attitudes. Internal conditions include prejudices, or stereotypes of a cognitive or emotional level, and external ones are real actions in interaction with an outgroup to implement prejudices already formed. A hierarchical system of conditions for overcoming discriminatory affirmations has been formulated, including four main components, where the first link is the formation of sociocultural identity, as an understanding and value of belonging to one’s own group; fixation of socio-cultural competence as a system of knowledge and ideas about the “Others”; formation of sociocultural values in relation to “others”; formation of sociocultural tolerance, which includes identity, competence and sociocultural values.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of conflict resolution strategies in the links between the avoidant attachment dimension and relationship satisfaction. The sample comprised 274 participants (ranging from 18 to 73 years old, 58% women). A predictive model of relationship satisfaction was tested, taking into account avoidant attachment and both own and perceived partner’s conflict resolution strategies. Structural equation modeling was used. Fit indexes indicated that the suggested overall relationship model was confirmed. Own withdrawal conflict resolution was associated positively with individuals’ perception of partner demand. Specifically, there was an indirect effect between own withdrawal and relationship satisfaction mediated by demand strategy perceived in the partner. Own withdrawal was negatively associated with perceived partner’s problem solving, and perceived partner’s positive conflict resolution strategy was positively associated with relationship satisfaction. Practical implications for professionals working with couples are discussed.
