Some plants have been reported to be of medicinal values and reserve some antimicrobial properties. One of such plants is Mitracarpus scaber and its effect on bacterial growth is evaluated. The study aimed at evaluating the phytochemical analyses and antimicrobial potentials of Mitracarpus scaber against aquatic bacteria including Aeromonas, Bacillus, Vibrio and Staphylococcus Spp. Leaves of Mitracarpus scaber were collected, washed and air dried and phytochemical analysis and antimicrobial investigation of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the leaves were carried out against a panel of bacteria isolated from diseased catfish from various farms. The phytoconstituents detected include saponins, tannins, flavonoids, tarpenoids, steroids, anthraquinones and alkaloids in both aqueous and ethanolic extracts. Both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of M. scaber showed varying degree of antibacterial activities but ethanolic extract showed a higher activity against the pathogens tested. The ethanolic extract had zones of inhibition similar to that of standard antibiotics (enrofloxacin) across all tested microbes.  The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration of ethanolic extract of M. scaber was against Bacillus sp with 10mg/ml while the highest was 85mg/ml against Staphylococcus species. The results of the assays showed promising evidences that M. scaber is a potential antibacterial agent against aquatic microbes.  However, further studies are recommended to fractionate its constituents and determine the in vitro and in vivo anti-microbial activities and the exact mechanism of action of the constituents.

The research study was to understudy the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical compounds and antifungal activity of methanolic extracts of Jatropha multifida, Euphorbia hirta, Occimum gratissimum and Mitracarpus scaber leaves against 12 species of fungi. The 8 phytochemical compounds tested were saponin, phenol, tannin, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoid, alkaloid and glycoside. The antifungi sensitivity test was analysed by Kirby-bauer disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) was analysed by broth tube dilution method followed by subculturing the relative samples. The plant extracts were prepared in the concentration range of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50,100 and 200 mg/ml. The antifungal sensitivity test showed that Jatropha multifida (200mg/ml) was weakly effective against Fusarium solani and resistant against others. Occimum gratissimum, Euphorbia hirta and Mitracarpus scaber at (200mg/ml) respectively was highly effective on most of the fungi species tested with zone of inhibition of 10-20mm. Jatropha multifida had MIC and MFC (>200mg/ml), Occimum gratissimum had MIC and MFC (100 and >100mg/ml), Euphorbia hirta (25-200 and 50 - >200mg/ml) and Mitracarpus scaber had (25 - 100 and 50-200mg/ml) on most test isolates respectively. Investigations showed, Mitracarpus scaber were highly effective, followed by Euphorbia hirta, Occimum gratissimum and Jatropha multifida on the test organisms and could be attributed to the presence of phytochemical compounds and as such can be harnessed and used as a source of alternative medicine especially in the tropics like the South-eastern Nigeria.

Extracts of the leaves, stem, roots, and seeds of <em>Mitracarpus scaber</em> plants have been thoroughly investigated in an attempt to determine their phytochemical and antioxidant activities.<em> </em>Phytochemical screening carried out by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) revealed the presence of several secondary metabolites in all the selective extracts of the plant. The levels of phenolic compounds showed that the leaves of <em>M. Scaber</em> are the richest in polyphenols with an average value of 488.291 ± 1.205 μg GAE/g (microgram of gallic acid equivalent per gram of the dry matter of the powdered plant). The total flavonoid assay revealed a high content in the leaves (1.624 ± 0.032 %). Also, studies of the antioxidant activities by DPPH<sup>● </sup>(2,2-diphenyl-1'-picrylhydrazyl) method showed a significant effect compared to vitamin C (96.62 %). The percentages of inhibition are respectively 89.82 % and 82.3 % for ethyl acetate extracts of the leaves and seeds. Furthermore, the inhibitory percentages of n-butanol in the leaves and seeds are 90.57 % and 83.67 %, respectively. Calculated IC<sub>50</sub> showed that the n-butanol fraction of the seeds exhibited the highest activity with an IC<sub>50</sub> of 0.293 mg/mL less than ascorbic acid with an IC<sub>50</sub> of 0.387 mg/mL.

Objectives:  A series of new dihydropyrano [2,3-c]pyrazol-6-amines in this investigation  study, are synthesized  by the strategy of one-pot four component reaction in an aqueous medium. Methods:  After getting optimum conditions the reaction of different substituted aromatic aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate, hydrazine hydrate,  and phenylacetonitrile catalysed by Sodium hydrogen sulphate NaHSO4 (0.5 m mol) by refluxing in ethanol-water (1:1) (5 ml) and heated at 80 oC. The synthesized molecules product was filtered, washed with water to get nearly pure product in excellent yield. Results:  The pure products which were got in a short duration, with excellent yield (80 – 87%). Those new compounds were identified by using spectroscopic techniques FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. Conclusion: In conclusion, the usefulness of this one-pot multicomponents protocol include easily available starting materials, facile, simple and environment-friendly procedure, and easier separation of products by filtration. The harvested Mitracarpus Scaber plants are identified in the national herbarium and registered under the number AA. 6252/HLB. During this work, three crude extracts are prepared from three organic solvents, namely dichloromethane; ethanol and hydro ethanol in 50/50 v/v proportion. The respective alkaloid extracts obtained from the corresponding crude extracts served as substrates for the hemi synthesis of thiosemicarbazone totals from thiosemicarbazides. The three hemi-synthesis products obtained were tested on eight (08) strains of germs, namely E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 25923, E. faecalis ATCC 22921, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, C. albicans ATCC 10231, S. typhi, K. pneumoniae and Dermatophilus 146. The ethanolic extract of thiosemicarbazones exhibited the best bioactive activity and was found to be the most selective. By a series of bio guided chromatographies: TLC thin layer chromatography; CPA atmospheric pressure chromatography and medium pressure liquid chromatography. MPLC (medium pressure liquid chromatography), separation on dextran gel: Sephadex® LH20). The use of available spectral data, cross-checked with that of the literature, made it possible to identify and purify three (03) molecules of thiosemicarbazones, making it possible to study the biological activity of their combination. Present work involve study of the toxicity and the antitrypanosomal activity of the hemi syntheses (total of thiosemicarbazones) extracted from the substrates (reagents of thiosemicarbazides) in 1N hydrochloric acid medium from Mitracarpus Scaber harvested in the region of Abomey-calavi. The ethanolic, dichloromethane and hydroethanol extracts (50:50 v/v) yielded the alkaloid extracts with yields of 4.44%, 2.48% and 5.08% respectively leading to three products of hemi-synthesis P1, P2 and P3 whose larval toxicities have respective values LC50: 78.1μg/mL, 95μg/mL, and 48.8 μg/mL whereas the toxicity tests of the alkaloid samples of ethanol, dichloromethane and hydroethanolic E1, E2 and E3 extracted from the evaluation of the same larval toxicity test gave values of 83.41μg/mL 102.51μg/mL and 52.91μg/mL respectively. These results were less toxic than those of semisynthetic products. Acute and sub-acute toxicity in non-pregnant NMRI female mice after oral gavage of P2 product has been shown to be non-toxic. The antitrypanosomal test was carried out according to the Alamar blue method, it revealed that P1 moderately inhibits trypanosome parasites (IC50=18.06 μg/mL) as well as P2 and P3 with a respective IC50 of 17.24 μg/mL and 20, 68 μg/mL while the alkaloid totals had lower antitrypanosomal activity than the hemi-synthesis products.
