Scheduled closure of coal-fired power plants will halve emissions in the electricity sector, although prices will be increased by 12%. To compensate for this increase, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge will promote new renewable power.

Significance The previous day, France's President Emmanuel Macron announced that Niger would be the new headquarters of French-led counterterrorism operations in the Sahel. This will give Bazoum a chance to assume a greater leadership role among the G5 Sahel countries -- Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger -- in the fight against jihadist groups in the region. Impacts Niger's bilateral relations with Mali and Chad will be less cordial because of Bazoum's stance against military involvement in politics. Opposition leaders and civil society activists will continue to be subject to heavy-handed treatment. More frequent extreme weather events will increase the numbers of internally displaced persons and refugees.

Significance China has paid a high price for more than four decades of draconian controls on family formation. Slowing population growth and structural shifts within the population have generated a demographic 'perfect storm'. Impacts Allowing couples to have three children will not increase the fertility rate enough to prevent demographic shrinkage and ageing. Rising spending on pensions, healthcare and elderly care may squeeze spending on industrial development and infrastructure. Policies to promote innovation and efficiency are even more urgent; the current Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) will be critical.

Furniture manufacturers’ response to the demographic challenge of aging nations is an important issue. The number of seniors is rising worldwide. The aging process often results in multiple health implications, including weaker mobility, decrease in muscle mass, and change in anthropometrical dimensions of the human body. Thus, the furniture offered should be adjusted to the needs of an increasing group of senior customers. To identify seniors’ preferences in relation to characteristics of sitting furniture, international surveys with 627 respondents aged 60+ years were conducted in Poland, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania. The implementation of this data in the design process may result in creation of the market offer meeting seniors’ needs. Design and functionality features were examined to provide guidance for senior-friendly development of furniture for sitting. Among the most important findings is the clear preference of having an armchair with the high backrest reaching above the head, a chair with armrests and an upholstered backrest and seat. Furthermore, respondents paid attention to the durability of furniture, stain resistance of upholstery, and adaptation of the furniture to the user’s dimensions, e.g., having influence on the height and depth of the seat before the purchase.

Abstract Ageing Europeans are today healthier than previous generations and often manage to live independently up to a high age. The proportion of people 80 years of age and older has increased significantly, and with high age the risk of multi-illness and dementia increases. Strong urbanisation processes have changed the demographic structure in rural areas, and young women and men have migrated towards the urban areas to study and work, while older persons have remained behind. This demographic challenge of increasing numbers of persons older than 80 years with care needs living in remote rural areas has become a major European social problem. In tackling this dilemma, many European countries have high expectations for eHealth, digitalisation and welfare technology. In this comparative study of policy debates in Italy, Finland and Sweden, we analyse how – between 2009 and 2019 – the issues of eHealth have been articulated in national and regional policies of the three countries with deep differences in terms of digitalisation and health systems, but with similar ageing populations. We identify in the documents three core topics – the role of technology, the rural issue and responsibility for care. These topics are treated in the documents with differences and similarities between the three countries. Beyond the differences and similarities, the documents reveal both a certain techno-enthusiasm about the role of eHealth in the life of the older adults as well as a limited understanding of the complexity (relationally as well as spatially) of the digital landscape of caring for older adults.

Abstract This chapter explores the role of Africa's universities in facilitating the proliferation and success of entrepreneurship as a development strategy. In particular, the discussion is intended to articulate how Africa's universities can support the generation of much-needed employment opportunities by providing education and training in entrepreneurship. The chapter first examines the prevailing entrepreneurial ecosystem, (i) by providing context from the available literature on the demographic challenge Africa faces in light of its rapidly-growing youth population and associated high unemployment rates and (ii) by exploring the means by which entrepreneurship can be fostered. Thereafter, the chapter focuses on working models of education and training in entrepreneurship, including intentions and adaptations, real-world successes, lessons learned and potential future directions.

The dynamics of international migration in 2020 clearly reflects the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on both population and GDP indicators. In Russia, the situation is quite difficult. The incidence extends to the East of Moscow. One of the essential areas of analysis of the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic is human potential. Our assumptions that the total mortality losses from various causes in 2020 will be higher than before the spread of this infection have been confirmed. A serious demographic challenge for our country is the fact that according to preliminary data, as of January 1, 2021, the total population has decreased by 510,405 people compared to the beginning of 2020. The weakest areas in the field of social development in Russia are: low life expectancy; high level of poverty; widespread gender inequality. All three of these factors are negatively affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. During a pandemic, there is an urgent need for decision makers to find a balance between reasonable restrictions and respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens.
