This chapter unifies cross-disciplinary references, analysis, and conceptualizations of modernity and modernization, highlighting a clear distinction between the spirit of both modernization and modernity. As we saw from different perspectives and criticisms, although modernization operates as a levelling process, modernity still appears to be worth a potential update. From coloniality to pandemic, by connecting modernities and histories, modernity can now represent a global necessity, where awareness of injustice, inequality, and human and environmental crises would create the possibility of a modernity-to-come.

Abstract: In the literary theory on autobiographical writing and autofiction, there has been a certain degree of confusion in the use of labels; only recently, a clear distinction has been drawn between them both. This article aims to establish a path of evolution for the dichotomy autobiography / autofiction. I will start from the origins of autofiction, will later analyse the evolution of the theoretical debate, and will finally focus on the latest relevant publications. Therefore, the article will make known new ideas, still little discussed in the Hispanic sphere, which develop and extend the approaches of authors based in this field of study.

Qualified human resources are a critical and essential factor in planning a smart city, implementing it, and in providing capabilities for forward thinking and enhancing the ongoing operation and performance. This chapter examines the human resources development needed for smart cities transformation, management, and organizational need for projects and practices required. A clear distinction is introduced between the institutional role, operations role, and development roles. With emphasis on technology skills and the needed technical know-how, an overview of soft skills and most demanded tasks for smart cities are presented. With clear definition and modeling human resource management for smart cities, this chapter provides a pragmatic approach to human resource planning and management for the digital transformation of smart cities.

To protect the so-called self-employed, a multilevel solution is needed. Requalification is a first step and to do this, a broad definition of the employment agreement and the presumption of an employment agreement in some situations, is useful. But even then, a clear distinction between bogus self-employed and real entrepreneurs is sometimes difficult to make and requalification for the self-employed who work for individuals is problematic. Working on the base of a service contract gives some protection and besides that, protection for all working people is needed, such as, for example, a financial contribution in case of disability.

Contrasting definitions of organs based either on function or on strictly morphological criteria are the legacy of a tradition starting with Aristotle. This floating characterization of organs in terms of both form and function extends also to organ systems. The first section of this review outlines the notions of organ and body part as defined, explicitly or implicitly, in representative works of nineteenth century’s comparative morphology. The lack of a clear distinction between the two notions led to problems in Owen’s approach to the comparative method (definition of homolog vs. nature of the vertebrate archetype) and to a paradoxical formulation, by Anton Dohrn, of the principle of functional change. Starting from the second half of the twentieth century, with the extensive use of morphological data in phylogenetic analyses, both terms – organ and body part – have been often set aside, to leave room for a comparison between variously characterized attributes (character states) of the taxa to be compared. Throughout the last two centuries, there have been also efforts to characterize organs or body parts in terms of the underlying developmental dynamics, both in the context of classical descriptive embryology and according to models suggested by developmental genetics. Functionally defined organ are occasionally co-extensive with morphologically defined body parts, nevertheless a clear distinction between the former and the latter is a necessary prerequisite to a study of their evolution: this issue is discussed here on the example of the evolution of hermaphroditism and gonad structure and function.

This protocol describes ddPCR titration of AAV vectors. To see the full abstract and additional resources, visit https://www.addgene.org/protocols/aav-ddpcr-titration/. Sample Data: When analyzing data there should be a clear distinction between negative droplets (black) and positive droplets (blue). The no template control (NTC) should be close to zero (B08). At Addgene, runs with an NTC >5 are invalid. To reduce NTC values, we recommend wiping down all pipettes and equipment with 10% bleach prior to use and keeping all reagents and samples on ice or pre-chilled 96-well freezer blocks during use. In this protocol, a dilution series is prepared for each AAV sample and the 3 final dilutions are assayed. The samples that are assayed are diluted 2-fold serially therefore, the concentration obtained by ddPCR should decrease by a factor of 2 across the dilutions. In the example below, 2-fold serial dilutions of a sample were loaded in wells A04, A05 and A06. As shown in the image and table below, the concentration of positive droplets decreases by a factor of ~2. To increase the accuracy of the titer, calculate an average of several dilutions. For additional tips on AAV titering using ddPCR, read our blog post.

In laser multiphoton electron extraction spectroscopy (MEES), the photo-charges extracted from a surface by a pulsed laser beam are recorded as a function of laser wavelength. We report the first application of this spectroscopy to banknotes. Various banknotes from different countries, authentic and counterfeit, have been tested. The results indicate that MEES spectra are both informative (many peaks) and reproducible. The spectra allow for clear distinction between authentic and counterfeit banknotes. Actually, MEES provides a unique fingerprint of the banknotes, so that distinction between various forgery methods (printer used) is also possible.

A survey of microfungi in the mountain areas of Uzbekistan revealed several specimens of cucurbitaria-like taxa. In this paper, one new species of Cucurbitaria is described based on a polyphasic approach, including morphological examination and molecular phylogeny. We compared the sexual morph (ascomata, asci, and ascospores) of the specimens collected with known species of Cucurbitaria and carried out multi loci (LSU, ITS, rpb2 and tef1-α) phylogenetic analyses. Cucurbitaria berberidicola sp. nov. is morphologically closely related to Cucurbitaria berberidis (the generic type) and C. oromediterranea. The sequence-based analyses verified a clear distinction, hence supporting the introduction of the new species.

This article traces the transformation of the system of control and repression of Brazilian pharmaceutical activities between the 1930s and the 1970s, through a Foucauldian framework of “differential management of illegalisms.” The period between 1930 and 1960 can be understood as a process of negotiation between pharmacists and state agencies that achieved a compromise on the differential management of illegalisms in relation to drugs, with a clear distinction between “laymen” and “professionals.” This compromise came into question during the dictatorship, due to institutional transformations that reinforced the autonomy of institutions of repression and a military struggle against subversion and corruption. Pharmacists and laymen alike were considered potential suspects. This suspicion even extended to the civilian agencies that were at the core of the regulation of the licit drug market. These developments profoundly changed the way illegalisms committed by professionals and state officials were treated, blurring the boundaries that had been established between laymen, professionals, inspectors, and industrialists. The final section of the article focuses on the various ways in which institutions of repression focused on pharmacists and state regulatory control agencies as potential places of subversive activity or corruption.

The article substantiates the idea that one of the factors of the development of legal science, in particular legal technology, is the degree of development of its categorical and conceptual apparatus. As one of the reasons preventing its formation is called inherent in any language property - polysemy. On the example of studying such a category as fiction, refracted through the prism of law, the negative consequences caused by its ambiguity are demonstrated. It is concluded that there is a need for a clear distinction between the existing meanings of words in the course of the formulation of special legal terms.
