Sweet potato peel (SPP), which consist of various natural bioactive compounds, could play an important role in ameliorating chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other degenerative diseases and yet remained underutilized. The current study investigated the effect of orange or purple SPP powder at different level of substitution (2, 5, 10%) in the production of biscuits on the proximate, antioxidant potentials and consumer acceptance. Dietary fibre increased significantly (P < 0.05) with an increase in SPP powder, ranging from 2 to 2.3 g/100 g. The total phenolic content of the biscuits was between 101.21 and 147.7 GAE/mL, total flavonoid ranged from 22.7 to 42.2 RU/mL, ABTS radical content ranged from 2.7 to 42.2 (µg ascorbic/mL). Acceptable biscuits were obtained by incorporating 2% SPP powder. Thus, SPP powder could be used as a functional and nutraceutical ingredient in biscuit production.

This study was performed to examine the effects of medicinal plant extracts of corn silk (Stigma maydis), parsley leaf (Petroselini folium), and bearberry leaf (Uvae ursi folium) on antioxidant status of the brain of experimental animals (mice) under the physiological conditions. Biological properties of these plants are insufficiently investigated and the aim was to explore their possible antioxidant effects that can alleviate oxidative damage of the brain tissue. Corn silk extract showed positive effect on activities of antioxidant enzymes in mice brain tissue. Parsley extract induced the increase in glutathione content and decrease of lipid peroxidation. Bearberry leaf extract induced catalase activity and decrease of hydroxyl radical content, while malonyldialdehide accumulation was maintained at the control level. Results obtained in this study support the use of corn silk, parsley and bearberry leaves as natural antioxidant sources in the prevention and treatment of brain tissue damages and different diseases caused by oxidative stress.

Plant species characteristic of arid and semi-arid zones, such as Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels, have a taproot that allows them to reach the soil horizons more quickly. Unfortunately, in the nursery, the containers of culture used for the production of seedlings do not support an excellent development of the root architecture that can be able to resist the shock of transplantation, in particular of the hydric stress. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological and biochemical behavior of Argania spinosa seedlings grown in containers of different depths under water stress. An experiment was conducted with 90 seedlings from the different containers (P1 for depth of 16 cm, P2 for depth of 30 cm, and P3 for depth of 60 cm), and three watering treatments (well-watered 100% of field capacity, moderate stress with 50% of field capacity and severe stress with 25% of the field capacity). Our results showed that seedlings from the 16 cm container had lower values of water status. Malondialdehyde content, electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide radical content gave higher values on seedlings from the shallow container. The benefits of increasing the container depth of nursery seedlings contribute to the improvement of physiological and biochemical responses of seedlings under water stress. To fully validate our findings, a long-term field study must be conducted.

Social networks are used by terrorist groups and people who support them to propagate their ideas, ideologies, or doctrines and share their views on terrorism. To analyze tweets related to terrorism, several studies have been proposed in the literature. Some works rely on data mining algorithms; others use lexicon-based or machine learning sentiment analysis. Some recent works adopt other methods that combine multi-techniques. This paper proposes an improved approach for sentiment analysis of radical content related to terrorist activity on Twitter. Unlike other solutions, the proposed approach focuses on using a dictionary of weighted terms, the Word2vec method, and trigrams, with a classification based on fuzzy logic. The authors have conducted experiments with 600 manually annotated tweets and 200,000 automatically collected tweets in English and Arabic to evaluate this approach. The experimental results revealed that the new technique provides between 75% to 78% of precision for radicality detection and 61% to 64% to detect radicality degrees.

Radical communication largely characterizes W. H. Gass’s The Tunnel. The novel incorporates many forms of radical speech and thought, it unfolds a number of radically charged issues of public and private life. It features a multitude of innovative experimental techniques and, in many instances, it demonstrates predominance of language and form over the content. In this paper, we have ascertained that the authenticity and multitude of radical communication forms in the said novel can essentially be grasped in terms of disjointing the Ich-Erzähler’s narrative voice and the authorial one. It has been ascertained that the sincerity in narrative largely governs its radical content while the book’s radical composition and radical language and style form the second set of the radical communication styles in the novel, reflecting Gass’s bent on experimental fiction. In the paper, the following radical communication style varieties have been singled out:  “breaking the narrative monotony,” “hate intensifying,” “filial unwillingness to forgive,” “revulsion invoking,” “provoking indecipherability/unreadability,” “accentuated total criticism,” or “downgrading metanarratives,” “ambivalent portrayal of the war and Holocaust,” “pictorial communication style,” “communication style of radically structured composition,” “communication style of verbal adornment,” “embellishment,” “conceit” (as a figure of speech).

This article analyzes deplatformization as an implied governance strategy by major tech companies to detoxify the platform ecosystem of radical content while consolidating their power as designers, operators, and governors of that same ecosystem. Deplatformization is different from deplatforming: it entails a systemic effort to push back encroaching radical right-wing platforms to the fringes of the ecosystem by denying them the infrastructural services needed to function online. We identify several deplatformization strategies, using Gab as an example of a platform that survived its relegation and which subsequently tried to build an alternative at the edge of the mainstream ecosystem. Evaluating deplatformization in terms of governance, the question that arises is who is responsible for cleansing the ecosystem: corporations, states, civil society actors, or all three combined? Understanding the implied governance of deplatformization is imperative to assess the higher stakes in future debates concerning Internet governability.

Although it is under-studied relative to other social media platforms, YouTube is arguably the largest and most engaging online media consumption platform in the world. Recently, YouTube’s scale has fueled concerns that YouTube users are being radicalized via a combination of biased recommendations and ostensibly apolitical “anti-woke” channels, both of which have been claimed to direct attention to radical political content. Here we test this hypothesis using a representative panel of more than 300,000 Americans and their individual-level browsing behavior, on and off YouTube, from January 2016 through December 2019. Using a labeled set of political news channels, we find that news consumption on YouTube is dominated by mainstream and largely centrist sources. Consumers of far-right content, while more engaged than average, represent a small and stable percentage of news consumers. However, consumption of “anti-woke” content, defined in terms of its opposition to progressive intellectual and political agendas, grew steadily in popularity and is correlated with consumption of far-right content off-platform. We find no evidence that engagement with far-right content is caused by YouTube recommendations systematically, nor do we find clear evidence that anti-woke channels serve as a gateway to the far right. Rather, consumption of political content on YouTube appears to reflect individual preferences that extend across the web as a whole.

Hg is an environmental pollutant with severe biotoxicity. Epiphytic Tillandsia species, especially Spanish moss T. usneoides, are widely used as the bioindicator of Hg pollution. However, the effects of different Hg concentrations on Tillandsia have been rarely studied and the occurrence of hormesis in Tillandsia species has not been determined. In this study, T. usneoides was subjected to stress induced by 15 concentrations of gaseous Hg ranging from 0 to 1.8 μg m–3 through a misting system and then Hg content and eight common biomarkers in leaves were measured. The results showed that leaf Hg content significantly increased with Hg concentration, showing a linear relationship. However, there were no obvious mortality symptoms, indicating that T. usneoides showed strong resistance to Hg. Conversely, there were no simple linear relationships between changes in various biomarkers following Hg treatment of T. usneoides and Hg concentration. With increasing Hg concentration, malondialdehyde (MDA) content did not change significantly, superoxide anion radical content decreased gradually, superoxide dismutase (SOD) content decreased to the bottom and then bounced back, electrical conductivity increased, and glutathione (GSH) and metallothionein (MT) content increased to the peak and then dropped. The coefficient of determination of the dose-effect curves between SOD, GSH, and MT contents and Hg concentration was high, and the dose-effect relationship varied with hormesis. The present study is first to confirm hormesis induced by heavy metal pollution in Tillandsia species.
