Corn silk (Stigma maydis), rich in flavonoids, is traditionally used to treat edema, depression, and hyperglycemia and may alleviate ischemic stroke symptoms in Chinese medicine. This study examined whether corn silk water extract (CSW) could alleviate ischemic stroke symptoms and post-stroke hyperglycemia in Mongolian gerbils with transient cerebral ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). After being given 0.05% (I/R-LCSW) and 0.2% (I/R-HCSW), 0.02% aspirin (I/R-aspirin), and cellulose (I/R-control) in their 40 energy% fat diets for three weeks, the gerbils underwent an artery occlusion for eight minutes and reperfusion. They took the assigned diet for an additional three weeks. Sham-operated gerbils without artery occlusion had the same diet as Sham-control. CSW intake reduced neuronal cell death in gerbils with I/R and dose-dependently improved the neurological symptoms, including drooped eyes, crouched posture, flexor reflex, and walking patterns. CSW intake also alleviated the short-term memory and spontaneous alteration and grip strength compared to the I/R-control group. The protection against ischemic stroke symptoms was associated with the reduced tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, superoxide, and lipid peroxide levels, promoting superoxide dismutase activity in the hippocampus in the CSW groups, compared to the I/R-control. The blood flow measured by Doppler was improved with CSW compared to the I/R-control. Furthermore, CSW intake prevented the post-stroke hyperglycemia related to decreasing pancreatic β-cell mass as much as the Sham-control, and it was related to protection against β-cell apoptosis, restoring the β-cell mass similar to the Sham-control. CSW intake elevated the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Allobaculum, and Akkermansia compared to the I/R-control. Picrust2 analysis showed that CSW increased the propionate and butyrate metabolism and the starch and glucose metabolism but reduced lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis compared to the I/R-control. In conclusion, CSW intake protects against neuronal cell death and post-hyperglycemia by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation and increasing blood flow and the β-cell mass. The alleviation was associated with promoting the gut-brain axis by changing the gut microbiome community.

Introduction: Corn silk or known as herb name stigma maydis is an important medicinal botanical in many traditional medicines worldwide, including jamu, an Indonesia traditional medicine. The exploration of corn silk to treat acne vulgaris is still lacking, therefore the current research was conducted to analyze the activity of ethanolic extract from corn silk (EECS) against 3 acne-related bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial activity of EECS at concentration range of 10 to 100% v/v was evaluated using the disk diffusion method. As comparation, distilled water was used as a solvent control, while 1% clindamycin was used as a positive control. Results: Shinoda’s test showed that flavonoid was detected in the EECS. The higher concentration of EECS exhibited higher diameter of inhibition zone indicating higher antibacterial activity on P. acnes, while the antibacterial activity of S. epidermidis was not increased at similar concentrations of EECS. The antibacterial activity of EECS against S. aureus decreased at the higher EECS concentration (>70%). Conclusion: Taken together, EECS is a potential as a bioactive source to inhibit the growth of acne-related bacteria P. acne, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Further investigation is needed to explore the corn silk or stigma maydis as a medicinal botanical in jamu targeted to treat acne vulgaris. Renal stone is one of the most problems worldwide. They are affected by different factors such as environmental effectors such as nutrient as well as family history. Corn silk (CS) used as antiurolythiasis. This study investigated the impact of corn silk extract as the management of renal stone formation, hypertension, and hepatoprotective. This work has been carried out on rats at Faculty of science Sana’a University, University of Science, and Technology Laboratories. Twenty-four male albino rats with weighing range between (200 g to 250g) were taken. They were divided in four groups (each group consists of 6animals). The first group of rats took normal diet and named as negative control (Co) whereas, the second group took normal diet with ethylene glycol (EG) (0.75%) and 1% ammonium chloride (AC) for 28 days and serve as positive control (Po). The third and fourth groups took the same substances as inPo group with 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of corn silk (CS) for 28 days respectively.Blood samples were collected from rats on last day of the experiment. All the tested samples showed a significant antioxidant DPPH radical scavenging activity and a notifiable decrease in serum aldosterone hormone, angiotensin comforting enzyme urea and creatinine levels comparedto positive control. Shown to significantly increased AST, ALT, and LDH in comparison to the urolithiatic group and near of normal group.In conclusion, the present study emphasizes the safe herbal remedies of CS as anti-hypertensive and antioxidants, as well as antiurolithiatic and hepatoprotective.

Phytochemical investigation of corn silk resulted in isolation and characterization of four flavone C-glycosides, chrysoeriol 6-C-β-oliopyranosyl-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3′-methoxycassiaoccidentalin A (2), chrysoeriol 6-C-β-boivinopyranosyl-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), and ax-4"-OH-3′-methoxymaysin (4), a triterpenoid, friedelin (5), two sterols, (22E)-5,8-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-ol (6) and 6β-hydroxystigmasta-4,22-diene-3-one (7), and a mixture of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Compounds 1 and 2 were previously undescribed. Structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was attained using spectral data including 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS. Compounds 1, 2, 5, and 6 inhibited iNOS activity in LPS-induced macrophages and decreased nitrite levels by 68.64+4.46, 65.67 + 6.47, 88.50 + 0.50, and 94.00 + 4.00 %, respectively, at 50 µM. Compound 5 also showed inhibition of NF-κB (51.00+1.50 %). Compounds 1 and 2 induced NAG-1 activity in chondrocytes by 1.80 + 0.05 and 2.00 + 0.13 fold, respectively. The extract of corn silk, however, did not exhibit inhibition of iNOS or NF-κB but induced NAG-1 by 1.80+ 0.51 fold.

Lemon balm and corn silk are valuable medicinal herbs, which exhibit variety of beneficial effects for human health. The present study explored the anti-obesity effects of a mixture of lemon balm and corn silk extracts (M-LB/CS) by comparison with the effects of single herbal extracts in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in mice. HFD supplementation for 84 days increased the body weight, the fat mass density, the mean diameter of adipocytes, and the thickness of fat pads. However, oral administration of M-LB/CS significantly alleviated the HFD-mediated weight gain and adipocyte hypertrophy without affecting food consumption. Of the various combination ratios of M-LB/CS tested, the magnitude of the decreases in weight gain and adipocyte hypertrophy by administration of 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, and 4:1 (w/w) M-LB/CS was more potent than that by single herbal extracts alone. In addition, M-LB/CS reduced the HFD-mediated increases in serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein, prevented the reduction in serum high-density lipoprotein, and facilitated fecal excretion of cholesterol and triglyceride. Moreover, M-LB/CS mitigated the abnormal changes in specific mRNAs associated with lipogenesis and lipolysis in the adipose tissue. Furthermore, M-LB/CS reduced lipid peroxidation by inhibiting the HFD-mediated reduction in glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Therefore, M-LB/CS is a promising herbal mixture for preventing obesity.

This study was performed to examine the effects of medicinal plant extracts of corn silk (Stigma maydis), parsley leaf (Petroselini folium), and bearberry leaf (Uvae ursi folium) on antioxidant status of the brain of experimental animals (mice) under the physiological conditions. Biological properties of these plants are insufficiently investigated and the aim was to explore their possible antioxidant effects that can alleviate oxidative damage of the brain tissue. Corn silk extract showed positive effect on activities of antioxidant enzymes in mice brain tissue. Parsley extract induced the increase in glutathione content and decrease of lipid peroxidation. Bearberry leaf extract induced catalase activity and decrease of hydroxyl radical content, while malonyldialdehide accumulation was maintained at the control level. Results obtained in this study support the use of corn silk, parsley and bearberry leaves as natural antioxidant sources in the prevention and treatment of brain tissue damages and different diseases caused by oxidative stress.

Corn silk (CS) is an agro-by-product from corn cultivation. It is used in folk medicines in some countries, besides being commercialized as health-promoting supplements and beverages. Unlike CS-derived natural products, their bioactive peptides, particularly antioxidant peptides, are understudied. This study aimed to purify, identify and characterize antioxidant peptides from trypsin-hydrolyzed CS proteins. Purification was accomplished by membrane ultrafiltration, gel filtration chromatography, and strong-cation-exchange solid-phase extraction, guided by 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical cation (ABTS•+) scavenging, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and lipid peroxidation inhibition assays. De novo sequencing identified 29 peptides (6–14 residues; 633–1518 Da). The peptides consisted of 33–86% hydrophobic and 10–67% basic residues. Molecular docking found MCFHHHFHK, VHFNKGKKR, and PVVWAAKR having the strongest affinity (−4.7 to −4.8 kcal/mol) to ABTS•+, via hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. Potential cellular mechanisms of the peptides were supported by their interactions with modulators of intracellular oxidant status: Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1, myeloperoxidase, and xanthine oxidase. NDGPSR (Asn-Asp-Gly-Pro-Ser-Arg), the most promising peptide, showed stable binding to all three cellular targets, besides exhibiting low toxicity, low allergenicity, and cell-penetrating potential. Overall, CS peptides have potential application as natural antioxidant additives and functional food ingredients.

AbstractNine odorless laboratory-collected hydro-distilled aqueous extracts (basil, calendula, centrifuged oregano, corn silk, laurel, oregano, rosemary, spearmint, thyme) and one industrial steam-distilled oregano hydrolate acquired as by-products of essential oils purification were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against three Salmonella Typhimurium strains (4/74, FS8, FS115) at 4 and 37 °C. Susceptibility to the extracts was mainly plant- and temperature-dependent, though strain dependent effects were also observed. Industrial oregano hydrolate eliminated strains immediately after inoculation, exhibiting the highest antimicrobial potential. Hydro-distilled extracts eliminated/reduced Salmonella levels during incubation at 4 °C. At 37 °C, oregano, centrifuged oregano, thyme, calendula and basil were bactericidal while spearmint, rosemary and corn silk bacteriostatic. A strain-dependent effect was observed for laurel. The individual or combined effect of marinades and edible coatings prepared of industrial hydrolate and hydro-distilled oregano extracts with or without oregano essential oil (OEO) was tested in pork meat at 4 °C inoculated with FS8 strain. Lower in situ activity was observed compared to in vitro assays. Marinades and edible coatings prepared of industrial oregano hydrolate + OEO were the most efficient in inhibiting pathogen. Marination in oregano extract and subsequent coating with either 50% oregano extract + OEO or water + OEO enhanced the performance of oregano extract. In conclusion, by-products of oregano essential oil purification may be promising alternative antimicrobials to pork meat stored under refrigeration when applied in the context of multiple hurdle approach.

Corn silk (Stigma Maydis) has been utilized as an important herb against obesity by Chinese, Korean, and Native Americans, but its phytochemicals and mechanisms(s) against obesity have not been deciphered completely. This study aimed to identify promising bioactive constituents and mechanism of action(s) of corn silk (CS) against obesity via network pharmacology. The compounds from CS were identified using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and were confirmed ultimately by Lipinski’s rule via SwissADME. The relationships of the compound-targets or obesity-related targets were confirmed by public bioinformatics. The signaling pathways related to obesity, protein-protein interaction (PPI), and signaling pathways-targets-bioactives (STB) were constructed, visualized, and analyzed by RPackage. Lastly, Molecular Docking Test (MDT) was performed to validate affinity between ligand(s) and protein(s) on key signaling pathway(s). We identified a total of 36 compounds from CS via GC-MS, all accepted by Lipinski’s rule. The number of 36 compounds linked to 154 targets, 85 among 154 targets related directly to obesity-targets (3028 targets). Of the final 85 targets, we showed that the PPI network (79 edges, 357 edges), 12 signaling pathways on a bubble chart, and STB network (67 edges, 239 edges) are considered as therapeutic components. The MDT confirmed that two key activators (β-Amyrone, β-Stigmasterol) bound most stably to PPARA, PPARD, PPARG, FABP3, FABP4, and NR1H3 on the PPAR signaling pathway, also, three key inhibitors (Neotocopherol, Xanthosine, and β-Amyrone) bound most tightly to AKT1, IL6, FGF2, and PHLPP1 on the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. Overall, we provided promising key signaling pathways, targets, and bioactives of CS against obesity, suggesting crucial pharmacological evidence for further clinical testing.
