Numerical calculations of ultraviolet to near-infrared absorption spectra by cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) doped in anodic aluminum oxide pores were performed using a finite-difference time-domain model. The height, diameter, and periodic spacing of the pores were optimized. Light absorption by the dots was enhanced by increasing the height and decreasing the diameter of the pores. When the height was less than 1 μm, visible light absorption was enhanced as the spacing was reduced from 400 nm to 100 nm. No enhancement was observed for heights greater than 6 μm. Finally, the optical mode coupling of the aluminum oxide and the quantum dots was enhanced by decreasing the pore diameter and periodic spacing, and increasing the height. Laser ablation verified light absorption enhancement by the CdSe QDs. The experiment verified the improvement of the laser-induced damage ability with wavelength of 355-nm after aluminum alloy 6061 coated with functional films, which was fabricated based on numerical calculations.

When doping gallium antimonide with 2 at.% Mn, it was found that, as a result of quenching of the melt, manganese segregates on grain-forming dislocations of the crystalline GaSb (111) texture in the form of microinclusions based on the ferromagnetic compound MnSb. Manganese atoms segregate on GaSb dislocations discretely with periodic spacing of inclusions from each other. The dimensions of the inclusions are of the order of 1 μm, they differ in composition and magnetic properties, but on average their composition and properties correspond to the ferromagnetic phase Mn1,1Sb. At T = 4 K, the crystalline anisotropy of GaSb <Mn> is accompanied by magnetic anisotropy; at T = 300 K, spherical clusters of a magnetic semiconductor retain the properties of a soft magnetic ferromagnet with a coercive force Hc ≈ 10 E.

In order to obtain a simple and accurate calculation method of shielding effectiveness for woven fabric containing metal fiber yarns, a conductive grid structure model composed of two parallel metal yarn periodic arrays was established. The two periodic arrays were cross-arrangement. The calculation formula of shielding effectiveness for the fabric was deduced through the transfer matrix of the electromagnetic field. The theoretical value of shielding effectiveness of the fabric using the theoretical formula and the measured value tested by the shielding chamber method were compared. Both sets of data were analyzed respectively from the metallic yarn periodic spacing, diameter, electric conductivity, electromagnetic wave polarization direction, and the weaving angle. The result shows that a reasonable agreement between the theoretical value and the measured value has been achieved in a frequency range from 4 to 14 GHz. This shows that the theoretical calculation model is simple, highly precise, and is valuable for the design and development of fabric containing metal fiber yarns. It can be used for estimating the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of the fabric.

ABSTRACTWe study possible morphologies of epitaxial films atop attractive substrates appearing as a result of competition of misfit stresses, van der Waals forces and surface energy. Corresponding formula for the critical thickness of the dislocation-free Stranski-Krastanov pattern is established for the isotropic deformable films and substrates. If the film thickness exceeds the critical magnitude the layer-by-layer pattern switches to islanding. At the first stage the islands have a shape of striae (i.e. long parallel trenches with periodic spacing). We discuss also i)the circumstances in which surface morphology of the film corresponds to a two-dimensional superlattice of islands rather than a one dimensional lattice of striae and ii)the influence of a buffer inter-layer.

The microstructures of YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films deposited by laser ablation on single crystal (001) LaAlO3 substrates have been investigated. The orientation of the YBa2Cu3O7−x layer next to the interface is found to be completely c-perpendicular, with a high degree of epitaxy between the film and the substrate. Misfit dislocations, with a periodic spacing of around 13 nm, are present at the interface. Two distinct interfacial structures are seen in these films. At a film thickness of around 400 nm, nucleation of c-parallel grains occurs, leading to a switchover from a c, and, and-perpendicular to a c-parallel microstructure. Amorphous particulates, ejected from the target during processing, lead to the formation of misoriented grains, giving rise to high-angle grain boundaries in the film.

The effective attenuation of harmonic waves propagating through periodically layered elastic media is studied. The waves are taken to be propagating in the direction normal to that of the layering of the media, which has alternate layers of like material. The main restriction of the derivation is that the wavelength of the waves must be long compared with the periodic spacing of the layering. An explicit formula for the attenuation is derived by a perturbation method of analysis. The analysis reveals the basic cause of the attenuation effect in terms of the scattering properties of the medium. Specific examples are studied.
