Modern application stores enable developers to classify their apps by choosing from a set of generic categories, or genres, such as health, games, and music. These categories are typically static—new categories do not necessarily emerge over time to reflect innovations in the mobile software landscape. With thousands of apps classified under each category, locating apps that match a specific consumer interest can be a challenging task. To overcome this challenge, in this article, we propose an automated approach for classifying mobile apps into more focused categories of functionally related application domains. Our aim is to enhance apps visibility and discoverability. Specifically, we employ word embeddings to generate numeric semantic representations of app descriptions. These representations are then classified to generate more cohesive categories of apps. Our empirical investigation is conducted using a dataset of 600 apps, sampled from the Education, Health&Fitness, and Medical categories of the Apple App Store. The results show that our classification algorithms achieve their best performance when app descriptions are vectorized using GloVe, a count-based model of word embeddings. Our findings are further validated using a dataset of Sharing Economy apps and the results are evaluated by 12 human subjects. The results show that GloVe combined with Support Vector Machines can produce app classifications that are aligned to a large extent with human-generated classifications.

New paradigms such as pervasive computing, cloud computing, and the internet of things (IoT) are impacting the business world. Smartphones are at the core of these paradigms by allowing us interaction with the world around us. In light of this, it is imperative to migrate a lot of existing non-mobile software to adapt it to the new technological reality. The main challenge to achieve this goal is the proliferation of mobile platforms. An integration of ADM (Architecture Driven Modernization), cross-platform development and formal metamodeling to face this kind of migration is described. The proposal was validated with the migration of object-oriented software to different mobile platforms through the multiplatform language Haxe. A comparison of the approach with traditional migration processes and the description of existing challenges in real projects of the scientific and industrial field are included.

Abstract In this article, Keystroke Level Model and Touchless Hand Gesture Level Model were adapted, as well as Fitts’s law, to work with touch screens of the mobile devices. The article takes into account typical gestures that users most often perform in the process of interaction with touch screens of mobile devices (Tap, Pinch, Swipe, Pan, Drag-and-Drop), as well as time components of gestures (time for direct execution of a gesture, time for mental preparation for the gesture, time for the user to select the necessary grip on the mobile device, time to select the ‘dominant’ hand to perform gestures, the time to select the finger to perform the gesture, time to move the hand away from the touch screen). A method for determining the speed of user gesture interaction has been developed. The problem was formulated and an algorithm was developed. The details of the operation and use of the algorithm are considered. A list of arrays and variables used as initial data for determining the speed of the sequence execution of operations using gesture interaction has been developed. The preparation of the initial data for the operation of the algorithm provides for a research experiment to obtain average values of the temporal components of gestures. The developed algorithm is intended for use at the design stage of mobile software applications that will run on mobile devices with touch screens.

Abstract Purpose After primary treatment, patients with early breast cancer are followed-up for 5-10 years. At the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) five year surveillance consists of three appointments and a phone service operated by a breast cancer nurse practitioner for patients who need counselling about symptoms related to side-effects or potential recurrence. In 2015 HUS launched a mobile software for cancer patients. This study was designed to find out patient preference for the modality of surveillance during the first years as the primary endpoint. Methods 765 patients with early breast cancer were randomized at the final visit of adjuvant radiotherapy to surveillance by phone calls or by mobile software. After six months the groups were crossed over to the other arm. At 12 months the patients were asked their preference. Results 446 patients (60%) contacted breast cancer nurse with either method at least once during the first year. Patient preference was analyzed among the 142 patients who contacted breast cancer nurse with both modalities. Of the patients 40% preferred phone calls, 30% mobile software while 30% considered both modalities equally good. There was no difference in quality of life, symptoms or patient satisfaction between the modalities. Conclusions Of the patients 30% preferred and 60% were willing to use digital solutions as the primary follow-up method for early breast cancer during the first year. There is a need to develop digital services for the follow-up of breast cancer.

This work considers the application of the Radio Mobile software for calculating the coverage zones of analogue FM- and digital DRM-transmitters. The requirements for the initial input data, enabling the reliable results, are demonstrated. It is shown that equality of the coverage zones of both transmitter types is determined by the proper ratio of the transmitter’s signal levels.

Advancements in mobile phones and technologies, have forced the mobile software community to develop smart applications which can help users in general purposes. During the pandemic, people have shifted their focus onto Video chatting and conferencing applications for conducting business, schools, and universities. The current software’s available provide several useful functions like live transcripts, allow users to create notes and providing third party application support. But there are certain areas where, video conferencing applications can improve upon primarily in interns of language support. This application will provide a new video conferencing feature which is live translation of speech which could help conduct business and conducting lectures.
