«Kinder sind keine kleinen Erwachsenen.» Dieser Ausdruck geistert durch viele medizinische Diskussionen. Doch was sind denn Kinder nun?

Boxing is a sport with a clear objective: to hit and not get hit. Despite all the rules and regulations that have been conceived for safety purposes over time, boxing will always be a hurting business at the end of the day. The sweet science is unique from all other contact sports, like hockey and football, in that the damage inflicted on your opponent is deliberate [1].

The shoulder is a particularly vulnerable joint in sports, and especially so in children and adolescents. The normal hypermobility during growth needs to be differentiated from pathological instability. Overuse injury has to be avoided or treated. Some injuries are specific for childhood and adolescence and need to be treated with a specific and age appropriate approach. Traumatic injury is seen as well, but in most cases of more importance for pediatric trauma specialist than sports medicine professionals. This review aims at giving an overview over the most important principles and diagnoses in dealing with sports related shoulder problems in pediatric and adolescent athletes.

It is now recognized that psychological variables influence the treatment adherence, the athlete’s rehabilitation and return to sport. Among the influencing factors, several elements specific to the athlete and the situation are decisive, but it is above all the attitude and the evaluation of one’s own injury situation that will influence the way in which the athlete will engage in the healing process. The role of the sport psychologist and his or her tools are described through two concrete cases to illustrate two different stages of intervention after an injury occurs: before surgery and during rehabilitation and return to sport. Different techniques are presented (mind-body techniques, mental imagery, mindfulness meditation, goal setting etc.) to illustrate how a sport psychologist works with athletes. Finally, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between all health professionals and the athlete’s entourage is emphasized in order to ensure holistic and adequate management of the athlete.

The early and long-term development of promising young athletes is a decisive factor in being internationally competitive in top-level sports. Among the multitude of talent criteria suggested in the literature, motivation plays a prominent role in the area of psychological characteristics. It is recognised in practice and research as a relevant criterion for performance development across all sports. This article provides an overview of the current state of talent research in the field of motivation. First, the most common theories of motivation in competitive sports are described, then different measurement methods and their advantages and disadvantages as well as the predictive value of motivation for athletic performance are discussed. Finally, implications for practice are suggested. It can be summarised that motivation in sport is conceptualised and operationalised in different ways and that the decision for the right measurement instrument depends on the goal of the assessment. To get a comprehensive picture of an athlete’s motivational status, it is useful to assess several aspects of motivation through different methods.

Mental health (MH) does not only mean the mere absence of psychiatric disorders but also the presence of well-being. Competitive athletes are exposed to risk factors for poor MH specific to the competitive sport context. One such risk factor are athletic career transitions, whereby the junior-to-senior-level transition (JST) is considered one of the most difficult of within career transitions. During this time, developmental changes must be mastered on a psychological, athletic, and educational level and conflicts that occur between the different areas of life, such as school, family, and sports can become more acute. JST is thus a particularly vulnerable period for the MH of competitive sport athletes. In this article, we describe a counseling approach that seems well suited to promote the MH of JST athletes within a sport psychology consulting setting. The approach is based on self-determination theory and ego-state theory. We illustrate the application of our counseling approach with an exemplary case. Finally, we provide recommendations for how sport psychology practitioners can promote MH in JST athletes.

Mindfulness and acceptance are core concepts of the third wave of cognitive and behavioral psychotherapies. Their aim is not to overpower thoughts and emotions by suppression and using control techniques but to change the relationships with them. This article focuses on mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches in sports. It briefly outlines these approaches and concludes that they are characterized by promoting three processes, which are present-moment attention, metacognitive awareness, and acceptance. Subsequently, the paper describes one approach particularly suitable for sports in detail – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy – with a special focus on how athletes can promote psychological flexibility and thrive in their effort to perform. This paper further addresses the question of whether mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches are effective in sports by summarizing research from the past five years in the form of a mini-review. Findings from 19 reviewed studies, including 15 controlled or randomized controlled studies, suggest that different athlete populations can benefit from mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches in terms of athletic performance and well-being. Positive effects on performance and well-being could be mediated by other psychological processes, e.g., enhanced emotion regulation. Further research is needed, especially regarding the mechanisms that impact mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions in sports.

Unlike in the hospital or the physiotherapy practice, the sports physiotherapist is a allrounder. From planning regenerative treatments and treating minor complaints to complete rehabilitation programs and consultations in all areas of life, everything is required. It is not enough to know wound healing and training science, the sport must be analyzed in detail. This article describes the challenges of a performance focused world with the athlete at the center. Everything that goes with it demands a lot of commitment. But it also offers an incredible opportunity for professional and personal development.

As a Sports Mental Coach, I would like to support athletes in their performance, in change processes as well as competently accompany them to their way and goals. Coachings at the Limmatfeld Physiotherapy Centre, will include Thematic areas for methodo1ogical implementation and at the same time the personal development process. Mental Training in sports is about process accompaniment to success. I accompany athletes in both grassroots and competitive sports. People in the economic environment can also benefit from sports psychology interventions in a sustainable way. [3] “lt’s won in the head, but lost as well.” Mental Strength is needed to achieve its goals. The power source sits in each one of us. In mental sports coaching, I show how the potential of this source is being exploited and can be used, with a variety of interventions to achieve goals. I design an individual coachings so that the athletes can mobilize potentials in challenging situations and act in an effective way.
