This article examines the phenomenon of Protracted Refugee Situations (PRS) and the so-called warehousing of refugees in the case of Kenya’s Dadaab refugee complex. We analyze the intractability of PRS in this particular case and argue that there are four main features that make it so: (1) a host state that views the refugees primarily as a security threat and takes very little responsibility for their well-being; (2) UNHCR acting as a surrogate state with very little influence over the Kenyan government and little incentive or capacity to remedy the situation; (3) an ongoing political situation in Somalia that prevents the safe return of refugees; and (4) a general failure on the part of wealthier countries to commit to substantial resettlement initiatives.

Within larger concern over wellbeing at a global level, there is growing interest in the role that sport can play in developing positive wellbeing with a focus on young people. Lifestyle sports that people participate in for pleasure rather than competition are likely to offer opportunity to develop wellbeing but research on them neglects middle aged participants. This article redresses this oversight by focusing on two surfers, with one male and one female, in their forties to explore the role that surfing plays in their lives and its contribution to their wellbeing. Using a narrative inquiry approach it explores the place of surfing in their lives over three decades to identify how its meaning changed as they matured and how it offered a highly effective coping mechanism for dealing with life’s stresses and pressures.

The question of loyalty in autocratic regimes has drawn a sustained scholarly interest, especially as autocratic leaders need to secure the support of their militaries to survive in office and to minimize the risk of a coup. Among the commonly employed mechanisms in this regard is the extension of extra-budgetary financial rewards, including “Military-Owned Businesses (MOBs)”. Nevertheless, under the increasingly significant threat of an uprising from below, military defection remains the key for the success of the revolution. The question then becomes: under what conditions would a military defect from an autocratic ruling alliance? This paper presents one novel answer to this question, which is: militaries are “defection-proofed” in the face of mass uprisings when they develop financial dependency on the regime. This hypothesis is tested comparatively against the cases of mass protests in China (1989), Indonesia (1998), Thailand (2006), and Iran (2009).

Kwan Yin, although typically depicted as female in Chinese literature and artworks, is originally a male deity Avalokite?vara in India. This essay examines the process, reason, and impact of Kwan Yin’s feminization in the ancient Chinese context and argues that her gender transformation is a transformation to the mother stereotype. The essay mainly relies on primary source of Buddhist texts and folklores of Kwan-Yin in China and secondary sources researching the gender transformation of Kwan-Yin through historical and sociological lens. The essay concludes that while the female Kwan Yin’s popularity could be seen as gender empowering, the mother stereotype she and female deities of other religions embody in fact dismisses woman’s individual value.

Blended learning that combines e-learning and face-to-face lessons is spreading from employee training to school education. To improve its educational effect, we conducted training after students watched on-demand teaching materials, that is, e-learning in advance. In addition, students’ watched on-demand review material created from the video of the practical training, aiming to confirm their knowledge and skills. The authors have so far proposed a Group work, Training, Group work and Presentation (hereinafter “GTGP”) training model that combines group work, training, group work and presentation. As a result of comparing blended learning that combined in-advance, on-demand teaching materials and the GTGP model training with the previous GTGP model training alone, we found that the average achievement rate improved by 6.0%. In addition, students’ expressions about watching on-demand review material after training indicated the material was effective.

Placing value on the health and wellness of Children with Disabilities (CWD) should be a core societal value. Twenty percent of children with disabilities aged 10 to 17 are obese. Decreased access to developmentally appropriate recreational activities, and inexperienced instructors lack of knowledge to effectively support their inclusion are barriers to their participation. School-based Physical Therapists (SBPT) are in a distinctive position to provide appropriate and modified fitness programs for children with disabilities. The purpose of this basic qualitative design study was to determine SBPTs’ perspectives on their aptitude and willingness to facilitate fitness, health, and wellness promotion programs for CWD. Social cognitive theory was used as the theoretical grounding for the conceptual framework of this research. The conceptual framework that guided this research was constructed from a combination of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health for Children and Youth and the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program conceptual framework. Purposive sampling yielded 12 participants who took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through Colaizzi’s seven step method. Results showed that SBPTs felt capable and willing to provide fitness, health, and wellness programs for CWD. Results support findings from the literature that suggest SBPTs are underutilized in the school setting and are equipped to facilitate fitness, health, and wellness initiatives for CWD. Findings inform stakeholders on strategies to steer SBPTs’ role as healthcare professionals in an educational environment. This research brings increased awareness to the potential contribution of SBPTs to partner with schools and families to facilitate fitness, health, and wellness programs for CWD.

Land is the bread winning element to most of the tribal all over the three regions of costal Andhra, Telangan, and even in Rayalaseem of AP more specifically, if it comes to the case of women it is applicable to all over the world women in restriction, because almost all the tribal depends on land since they have less literacy rate compare to the other population of the state, so they are ultimately depends on land and forest which is readily available to them. There are complex issues of lad acts, and their own family systems have a great impact on their social life and especially on the life of tribal female.

First-generation college students face many challenges transitioning into school. This research included details relating to the difficulties facing the scholars and how college educators can address the needs. Understanding the concerns of first-generation college students is critical for the implementation of comprehensive programs to provide support for first-generation students. Appropriate support is not being put in place, and the problem is college educators do not understand first-generation college students’ burdens. An insufficient exploration of the issues surrounding institutional structures within the higher education community to support this population represents a gap in the literature. The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to explore the perspectives of the first-generation students and university representatives regarding the necessary interventions designed for learning. Research questions helped to identify the viewpoints of the scholars and set the foundation for all-inclusive plans. 26 participants were interviewed, 15 of whom were included in four small focus groups and 17 of whom participated in in-depth interviews. Program policy documents were reviewed as well. The analysis involved coding the information for themes and interpretations, which findings suggest providing a more collaborative system with comprehensive support for first-generation college students. Best practices for transformational changes were linked to maintaining sustainable relationships and integrating cultural competence for the learners.

There are significant issues when defining the universe. Original theories over time were limited and led to mistakes under more detailed investigation. The components of early models remain and misdirect our ongoing understanding of the Universe. This leads to today’s questionable cosmology. The current cosmology is called the standard model.
