Blended learning is a mixture of online learning and face-to-face activities. Online learning suffers from a lack of practical and laboratory work which is mandatory for learning in many specific fields. Adult training is also mainly focused on knowledge related to specific useful competencies and practical skills so practical training is an inseparable part of adult learning and training. Web laboratories with remotely controlled laboratory experiments should provide a necessary practical component in the concept of online learning. There are many different classifications, implementations and usages of web laboratories. This chapter deals with web laboratories, trying to define a framework for the development of web laboratories, to define pre-requests, architecture and software realization of web based laboratories and to find the right blend. This chapter also presents the contribution of web laboratories in blended learning and other possible benefits for the concept of blended learning for adults.

Purpose: Dietetic internship coordinators are key players in selecting internship applicants and in shaping their experiences and professional identities throughout the internship. Coordinators’ experiences of their work have not yet been explored in the dietetic literature. Methods: Four current and four previous internship coordinators each participated in a one-on-one, semi-structured telephone interview. Data was analysed using constant comparative analysis. Results: Coordinators had three to nine years of experience. All stated their commitment and concern towards the dietetic training process. Coordinators noted the value of internship as a learning process and a time for intensive and essential practical training. Overall, participants felt gratified with their work, despite their roles requiring extensive time and resources. Other findings revealed that coordinators felt a sense of responsibility for selecting the “right” interns. Conclusions: A heightened sense of responsibility along with limited time and resources has the potential to lead to burnout for this professional group. Future enhancements and changes to the internship process have potential implications for health human resources among coordinators, but more research is required to examine specific implications of such changes on dietetic training and education in Ontario.

The ongoing professionalization of the Polish Armed Forces as well as the completion of tasks abroad necessitate redefinition of the current process of troops commanding and training, particularly at the lowest tactical level. The decentralisation of command processes, the saturation of the battlefield with state-of-the-art assets supporting command processes and “personal contact” between a superior and his/her subordinate require full decision-making and an ability to select the right tools to lead in a particular situation. This is the only way to ensure that tasks are carried out at a high level, efficiently and according to the objectives set. Looking into the future, a commander needs to be provided with a certain degree of freedom while feeling the responsibility he/she is shouldering. Specification of these conditions in conjunction with appropriate cohesive education and practical training at all command levels will increase its creativity and allow a military organisation to smoothly respond to new challenges and threats.

Annotation. Practical training is the main type of training for interns, during which practical skills are formed and clinical thinking of future surgical specialists is improved. The purpose is to determine the components of the effectiveness of practical training in clinical microbiology for physicians-interns of surgical profile. In the teaching of clinical microbiology in practice, it is important to clearly differentiate the thematic focus, considering the future specialty of the intern. Interns for surgeons and traumatologists need to know the biological characteristics of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms involved in the complication of gunshot wounds. It is advisable to dedicate one of the practical lessons to the future aspects of laboratory diagnostics and the use of biological products in the treatment of vaginosis for future obstetricians-gynecologists. For ophthalmologists, it is extremely important to have a practical training session on microorganisms that infect the cornea, causing viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal keratitis; We emphasize the risks of contact lens-related infections. Surgical profile interns at clinical microbiology classes study and practically work out methods of microbiological examination of pathological material isolated from patients, master the skills of interpretation of the obtained results, and decide on etiotropic treatment of the patient. A necessary component of training interns of a surgical profile in clinical microbiology is the implementation of multicontrol of the level of knowledge, knowledge of modern aspects of diagnostics and interpretation of the obtained results. Based on the criteria obtained, the intern can make the right decision and interpret any clinical situation.

Underwater undulatory swimming (UUS) is often perceived to be a nonessential aspect of aquatic propulsion. Given their solid theoretical and practical training in swimming, physical education students should be capable of judging the true value of the “fifth stroke,” since it appears to be the most efficient technique in high level, competitive swimming. To compare opinions and connotations associated with the stroke and the four official strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl), 198 students (32 of whom were expert swimmers; M age = 20.6 yr., SD = 1.2), were surveyed using the semantic differential of Osgood, Suci, and Tannenbaum. Although answers of expert and nonexpert swimmers differed significantly ( p<.01, except for the breaststroke), participants considered overall that undulatory stroke was less attractive, less powerful, and less rapid than the four surface strokes ( d = 2.88 for the expert swimmers). Putting one arm in front of the other and repeating the sequence still remains the most solidly held representation of “the right way” to swim. However, the high observed standard deviations for the underwater undulatory stimulus ( SD ≥ 1.1 with SD max = 3 for the expert swimmers) attests to the view being less strongly held by swimming specialists.

The aim of this article is to understand whether the conditions in Portuguese public polytechnics (PPPs) when studying for a PhD are similar to those in Portuguese public universities (PPUs). Three pillars were analyzed (research, academic staff degree, and precarious rate of academic staff), and to this end, we conducted independent sample t-tests and designed a correlation matrix to shed light on the relationship between the percentage of precarious academic staff and the short-run variables in the environment of PPPs. The main findings reveal differences between PPUs and PPPs, indicating that policymakers failed to ensure that PPPs are competitive vis-a-vis PPUs in this area. Decree-Law No. 65/2018 granting PPPs the right to award doctoral degrees gives rise to a number of risks: a loss of focus in PPPs, the disappearance of the most used system in higher education (binary or dual system), and the absence of higher institutions in Portugal that provide practical training. If this is the path chosen by policymakers and the nature of course programs in PPPs and PPUs are becoming more similar, we strongly recommend that similar conditions should prevail in the two subsystems; this entails greater investment in PPPs and even the possibility of awarding PhD professional degrees in close connection with firms and corporations.

In recent years, there has been an active revival of the movement of Student detachments. The authors, using the example of the Chelyabinsk Institute of Railway Transport — branch of the Ural State University of Railway Transport, share their experience in organizing student teams. Questions are raised about the potential of student detachments in solving modern problems related to the training of future specialists. By organizing student detachments in an educational institution, it is possible to carry out real practical training of students for future professional activities. Student detachments helps to establish mutually beneficial cooperation between the university and the future employer interested in obtaining highly qualified personnel for the industry. The role of construction detachments in the formation of personality and worldview of modern students, motivation of their behavior is described. The tendencies of the development of detachment life during the period of academic semesters are shown: creative festivals, sports days, intellectual contests, charity events. The work of students in the construction detachments makes it possible to prepare not only a highly qualified specialist, but also to bring up a harmonious personality. Prospects for the development of the student detachments in Russia are considered. The development and support of the student detachment movement is one of the most important vectors in modern life, it is strategically important, it educates student youth in the right direction, it is the popularization of labor as a means to ensure a reliable future for oneself, the education of patriotism.

SummaryRecently, there has been a proliferation of international agreements imposing minimum standards on states in respect of their treatment of foreign investors and allowing investors to initiate dispute settlement proceedings where a state violates these standards. Of greatest significance to Canada is Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which provides both standards for state behaviour and the right to initiate binding arbitration. Since 1996, four cases have been brought under Chapter 11. This note describes the Chapter 11 process and suggests some of the issues that may arise as it is increasingly resorted to by investors.

Abstract The target article carefully describes the memory system, centered on the temporal lobe that builds specific memory traces. It does not, however, mention the laterality effects that exist within this system. This commentary briefly surveys evidence showing that clear asymmetries exist within the temporal lobe structures subserving the core system and that the right temporal structures mainly underpin face familiarity feelings.
