The COEL database and database software, a combined reference and research tool created by historians for historians, is presented here through Screenshots illustrating the underlying theoretical model and the specific situation to which that has been applied. The key emphases are upon data integrity, and the historian's role in interpreting and manipulating what is often contentious data. From a corpus of sources (Level 1) certain core data are extracted for separate treatment at an interpretive level (Level 3), based upon a master list of the core data (Level 2). The core data are interdependent: each record in Level 2 is of interest in itself; and it either could or should be associated with an(other) record(s) as a specific entity. Sometimes the sources are ambiguous and the association is contentious, necessitating a probabilty-coding approach. The entities created by the association process can then be treated at a commentary level, introducing material external to the database, whether primary or secondary sources. A full discussion of the difficulties is provided within a synthesis of available information on the core data. Direct access to the source texts is only ever a mouse click away. Fully query able, COEL is formidable look-up and research tool for users of all levels, who remain free to exercise an alternative judgement on the associations of the core data. In principle, there is no limit on the type of text or core data that could be handled in such a system.

The development and present structure of the comprehensive Low Vision Service of the New York Association for the Blind are used as the basis for a full discussion of the operation of such a clinical service, including its positive and negative features. The clinic is administered by a medical director and by an administrator who coordinates the work of a staff consisting of ophthalmologists, optometrists, low vision assistants, volunteers, registrar, and receptionist. A separate Optical Aids Service stocks low vision aids which it sells by prescription to clinics, doctors, and patients within and without the agency. Referrals for special services are made to the other departments of the agency. Also described are the low vision examination itself, follow-up and training services, and the aid loan system.

Databases containing macromolecular structure data provide a crystallographer with important tools for use in solving, refining and understanding the functional significance of their protein structures. Given this importance, this paper briefly summarizes past progress by outlining the features of the significant number of relevant databases developed to date. One recent database, PDB+, containing all current and obsolete structures deposited with the Protein Data Bank (PDB) is discussed in more detail. PDB+ has been used to analyze the self-consistency of the current (1 January 1998) corpus of over 7000 structures. A summary of those findings is presented (a full discussion will appear elsewhere) in the form of global and temporal trends within the data. These trends indicate that challenges exist if crystallographers are to provide the community with complete and consistent structural results in the future. It is argued that better information management practices are required to meet these challenges.

Abstract A thorough analysis on the characteristics of a grout delivery mechanism in the lining of shafts has been accomplished. The dynamic equation of this spraying mechanism has been established and can describe the system’s performance properties under different conditions of viscous friction forces. The analysis introduces a combined viscous damping coefficient c* and a ratio λ between viscous friction force and inertia force. It is proved theoretically that the relative velocity of the grout is less than the implicate velocity and the emission angle α described in the paper is always larger than 45 °. Numerical simulations are performed by feeding various different parameters into the model. A full discussion of the effects of different variables is presented. Additionally, a formula for calculating the driving torque and power is developed. These studies provide an understanding of the properties of this mechanism and should prove useful in guiding its design and operation.

Two well-known authorities on hemolytic disease undertake in this paper to determine the causes for what they consider to be an excessive mortality from this disease in England and Wales at the present time. They state that with correct use of exchange transfusion a mortality of not more than 5% of infants with hemolytic disease born alive should be expected. The authors express the opinion that the deaths at present are at least three times as numerous as should be expected with modern treatment. Analysis of the reported deaths seem to indicate two principal causes for this: (1) failure to anticipate the disease before birth or to recognize the disease early after birth, and (2) either failure to undertake an exchange transfusion or to employ satisfactory technique in the exchange transfusion, particularly to give an adequate exchange. They point out that the best results are to be expected in hospitals where a large number of cases are treated and considerable experience is acquired. In hospitals where the number of cases seen is small it is difficult for the staff to gain the necessary experience and familiarity with the technique of exchange transfusion and the general principles of diagnosis and management. A full discussion of the essential points in prediction and diagnosis of the disorder and of the indications for exchange transfusion, with emphasis on the volumes of blood to be exchanged, are given.

No one could be keener than I am on keeping the parents of neonatal intensive care unit patients fully informed. Furthermore, I would be the first to agree that there comes a time in critically ill patients of all ages and all sizes when it is wrong to continue with intensive care, and, like everyone else involved in neonatal intensive care, I have often done so, but only after full discussion with parents, the nurses, and my colleagues.

In theAjaxof Sophocles Ajax, deprived of his intended revenge over the Greek leaders who deprived him of the arms of Achilles, has resolved on suicide. Tecmessa has sought to dissuade him, appealing to the need to care for their baby son; Ajax has rejected her, saying that he is too old to be taught lessons. But suddenly all is apparently changed. He re-enters and talks of the changes brought by time and seasons; he himselfhaslearnt his lesson, and will purify himself, bury his sword, and seek reconciliation with his enemies. The speech is a very vexed problem in the interpretation of theAjax, especially since, when he next appears, Ajax seems to have forgotton all about it, and proceeds with his suicide without any reference to his previous change of mind, if such it was. But this is a complex problem, requiring full discussion elsewhere.

This article reports on a pilot study into how corpus methods can be applied to the study of one type of phraseological unit, formulae, in native speaker and learner speech. Formulae, or formulaic expressions, are multi-word units performing a pragmatic and/or discourse-structuring function and have been characterised as being typically native-like. The methodology presented here is contrastive and involves the use of computerised corpora of both native and non-native speaker speech. It consists of two steps: (1) the automatic extraction of all recurrent word combinations to produce lists of potential formulae, and (2) a carefully specified manual filtering process designed to reduce these lists to lists of actual formulaic usage. The results of this process allow for the first genuine quantitative comparison of formulae in the speech of native and non-native speakers, which in turn has significant implications for SLA research. This paper focuses on methodology and does not present a full discussion of the results. However, selected example findings are presented to support the approach adopted.
