This article examines the socio-economic development of monotowns in Kazakhstan on the example of Zhezkazgan city. The authors analyzed the satisfaction of citizens with the living conditions in monotowns, as well as identified the problems of sustainable development and prospects for socio-economic transformation of this region. The results of the study showed that the main problem of a monotown is its dependence on the city-forming enterprise. At the same time, respondents expressed a high desire to migrate to other regions (78% of respondents).

Aim: Lately, there is more and more discussion about sustainable development and social responsibility within organizations, thus increasing the pressure on organizations and managers to act ethically and responsibly. The main purpose of this study is to present how Romanian businesses have integrated aspects of social responsibility into the decision-making and management systems of organizations. The study focuses on identifying the main factors behind the development of the concept of social responsibility and presenting the link between economic activity and sustainable development. A major focus of this research is the study on the implications of corporate social responsibility in reducing the number of youth unemployment at national level. Design/Research methods: As far as the methodology of research is concerned, we will start from the theoretical documentation and we will continue with empirical research, using descriptive analysis and statistical interpretation of data as the main research methods. Conclusions/findings: Empirical research conducted in this paper allowed us to observe the involvement of organizations in adopting support measures for the social problems of young people unemployed. Originality/value of the article: Social responsibility is a vast concept that is growing in Romania and the implication of this concept in solving unemployment has led us to realize the present research that we want to add value to both the business environment in Romania and young researchers interested in this field.

Abstract Based both on a historical approach regarding the evolution of the environmental education between 1960 and present days, and on empirical research as well, the author proves that the efficiency of the environmental education could be much higher if included within the broader sphere of moral and civic education and if it is driven by a more extensive ideal sprung from the fundamental human right to a clean and well preserved environment, by the contemporary moral and civil values. The author pleads and motivates for an increased capitalization of the humanities and social sciences, of art, of environmental ethics and aesthetics in shaping “the ecological personality” of the tomorrow people. When shaping these personality traits through environmental education activities, one must emphasize the importance of practice and applied actions aimed to protect the environment, and in general, the practice of civic-moral education methods.

Coal is one of the non-renewable resources, and in our country at present also is the main source of energy. It is very important to improve the coal mining rate, to exploit and to use the coal reasonably. Saving coal resource is an important measure for our coal industries sustainable development. Because large amounts of coal under complex conditions caused by fully mechanized mining can not be mined, the rotation mining with large angle for unequal and fully mechanized mining face and its design and main parameters are introduced in this article based on an engineering practice. Using this mining method, the coal under complex condition can be mined as much as possible. It is helpful for us to improve coal mining rate and to economize coal resources.

Coal resource utilization system, based on circular economy, is an opening, complex and time-varying system. It composes of subsystems such as industry, population, economy and environment etc. Taking the industry subsystem as prime object, this paper builds its system dynamics model adopting the system dynamics method based on full life cycle. The adjustment parameters such as utilization rate of by-product of mining, the proportion of coal use in each industry and waste recycling rate etc. were confirmed. As a case of coal utilization system being designed, thirteen development projects belong to two types of scenarios were run on the model. The efficacy coefficient method was applied to analyze the simulation results and determine the comparatively best project of coal resource utilization system for the first time. The results indicate that the C4 among them are the best project comparatively, its waste emission is the least, and the benefits of economy, environment and society are the maximum. Research shows that extending industrial chain, increasing production proportion of high added-value product and raising waste recycling rate are beneficial to decrease coal-mining quantity for unit output value, protect coal resource and achieve sustainable development, namely that adopting circular economy development pattern is undoubtedly worthy of advocating for sustainable development of economy, environment and society.

Purpose Learning about sustainable development in dedicated curricula can be beneficial for students’ personal and professional development and societies alike. However, for various reasons the implementation of sustainable development modules in existing curricula can be difficult in many fields of study. This paper aims to propose an alternative route to give students the chance to learn about sustainable development without the need to change the structure of their study program. Design/methodology/approach The current paper elaborates on the idea that many fields of study have mandatory courses on empirical research methods and these courses can function as a platform to teach applied empirical research methods in combination with education on sustainable development. A three-phase model is proposed to implement sustainable development topics in existing curricula, taking students’ current methodological competency level into account. Findings The proposed model provides a chance to combine education on sustainability with thorough training in scientific research methods. Example projects and evaluation results from an existing social science curriculum and its integration into a real-world laboratory on sustainable energy use illustrate the different phases and their goals. Originality/value The model offers the opportunity to implement education on sustainability into existing curricula without the need for difficult structural changes. It extends students’ learning on sustainability without impairing their learning of research methods. A discussion of the model’s limitations and boundary conditions helps to understand its potential use cases and challenges.

Metal industry in China is characterized by high energy consumption, pollution and emissions. This paper established a conceptual framework of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) for metal industry sustainable development. Content analysis of sustainability reports was applied to make empirical research, focusing on the top 10 Chinese metal companies. Findings indicate that the majority of large Chinese metal companies are aware of SSCM, but the concept of SSCM needs to be further spread in Chinese metal industry. Four strategies of SSCM adopted by the leading metal companies include green procurement and supplier sustainability management, low-carbon logistics, green manufacturing, and green marketing. Findings provide a successful paradigm for other metal companies to follow sustainable development.

Abstract The stability of the financial systems is an objective necessity for the sustainable development of each national economy. Within this framework, ensuring financial stability is a priority for the central banks and for the other macro-prudential supervisory and regulatory authorities. In order to ensure the stability and "the health" of the national financial system, the competent authorities should analyze, assess and adopt optimal and timely measures to eliminate potential imbalances. These and other aspects are the main objectives of our research.
