Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as one of the most promising biomedical strategies for different areas in the biomedical field owing to its superior advantages, such as being noninvasive, target-specific and having fewer side effects. Graphene-based hydrogels (GGels), which have excellent mechanical and optical properties, high light-to-heat conversion efficiency and good biocompatibility, have been intensively exploited as potential photothermal conversion materials. This comprehensive review summarizes the current development of graphene-integrated hydrogel composites and their application in photothermal biomedicine. The latest advances in the synthesis strategies, unique properties and potential applications of photothermal-responsive GGel nanocomposites in biomedical fields are introduced in detail. This review aims to provide a better understanding of the current progress in GGel material fabrication, photothermal properties and potential PTT-based biomedical applications, thereby aiding in more research efforts to facilitate the further advancement of photothermal biomedicine.

In this review, various methods of preparation of activated carbon from agricultural and commercial waste material are reviewed. In addition, we also discuss various activation treatments using a comparative approach. The data are organised in tabulated form for ease of comparative study. A review of numerous characterisation techniques is also provided. The effect of time and temperature, activation conditions, carbonisation conditions and impregnation ratios are explained and several physical and chemical activation treatments of raw materials and their impact on the micro- and mesoporous volumes and surface area are discussed. Lastly, a review of adsorption mechanisms of activated carbon (AC) is also provided.

ABSTRACTThis study uses various characterisation techniques on the razor shell (Ensis siliqua), to relate the shell's microstructure to its mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown that the outer and inner regions of the shell are composed of simple and complex crossed lamellar microstructures respectively. These layers are interspersed by prismatic layers of a completely different crystallographic orientation. Nanoindentation and microhardness measurements have shown that the structure is anisotropic, and Raman band shifts have been observed within these indented/deformed areas of shell, showing that the microstructure deforms rather than generating surface damage. The use of energy variable synchrotron X-ray diffraction has shown that the calcium carbonate crystals of the shell are preferentially orientated as a function of depth and that opposing residual stresses exist at the outer and inner regions of the shell. This study has analysed several microstructural features of the shell and provided an insight into how they prevent failure of the material.
