In this work, Norway spruce bark was used as a precursor to prepare activated biochars (BCs) via chemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a chemical activator. A Box–Behnken design (BBD) was conducted to evaluate and identify the optimal conditions to reach high specific surface area and high mass yield of BC samples. The studied BC preparation parameters and their levels were as follows: pyrolysis temperature (700, 800, and 900 °C), holding time (1, 2, and 3 h), and ratio of the biomass: chemical activator of 1: 1, 1.5, and 2. The planned BBD yielded BC with extremely high SSA values, up to 2209 m2·g−1. In addition, the BCs were physiochemically characterized, and the results indicated that the BCs exhibited disordered carbon structures and presented a high quantity of O-bearing functional groups on their surfaces, which might improve their adsorption performance towards organic pollutant removal. The BC with the highest SSA value was then employed as an adsorbent to remove Evans blue dye (EB) and colorful effluents. The kinetic study followed a general-order (GO) model, as the most suitable model to describe the experimental data, while the Redlich–Peterson model fitted the equilibrium data better. The EB adsorption capacity was 396.1 mg·g−1. The employment of the BC in the treatment of synthetic effluents, with several dyes and other organic and inorganic compounds, returned a high percentage of removal degree up to 87.7%. Desorption and cyclability tests showed that the biochar can be efficiently regenerated, maintaining an adsorption capacity of 75% after 4 adsorption–desorption cycles. The results of this work pointed out that Norway spruce bark indeed is a promising precursor for producing biochars with very promising properties.

Carbon adsorbents for use in the removal of gaseous toluene from the air were prepared from buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) hull. A chemically-activated adsorbent was prepared via the impregnation of raw hull powder with potassium carbonate, followed by thermal decomposition. The chemically-activated adsorbent exhibited improved adsorption capacity for toluene compared to the adsorbent prepared without chemical activation. Toluene concentration in the air decreased from 220 ppm to 160 ppm during 24 h of adsorption using unactivated adsorbent. Only a trace amount of toluene remained after the adsorption under the same conditions using K2CO3-activated adsorbent. This improvement was explained based on experimental results, specifically, iodine adsorption tests, methylene blue adsorption tests, and microscopic observations. Chemical activation dramatically increased the specific surface area of the adsorbent and created mesopores capable of adsorbing toluene. This study revealed that a mesoporous adsorbent for use in volatile toluene removal can be prepared from waste biomass (buckwheat hull) by chemical activation using potassium carbonate.

The article discusses significance of the development of activated carbon materials with a high specific surface area and high porosity. The features of the course of chemical activation and the factors influencing the characteristics of the obtained material have been established. The main stages of the activation of the carbon material, including the preliminary raw carbon material carbonization, its alkaline activation, and the post-processing of the created material, have been determined. The mutual influence of temperature and flow rate of an inert gas on the characteristics of a carbon material obtained with a BET specific surface in the range of 2550–2700 m2/g is experimentally investigated. The analysis of the obtained results has been carried out. Recommendations are given for reducing ambiguity and uncertainty during the transition from laboratory research to pilot production. The resulting activated carbon material can be used as a sorbent in gas purification systems, gas accumulators and for solving various environmental problems.

More than 14 billion pencils are manufactured and used globally every year. On average, a pencil is discarded after 60% of its original length has been depleted. In the present work we propose a simple and affordable way of converting this non-neglectable amount of waste into added value carbon product. In particular, we demonstrate the microwave synthesis of carbon from the wood pencil with and without chemical activation. This could be a process stage before the final recycling of the expensive graphite core. In the latter case, irradiation of the wood pencil in a domestic microwave oven heats up the pencil’s graphite core, thus inducing carbonization of its wood casing. The carbonized product consists of amorphous carbon nanosheets having relatively low surface area. However, if the wood pencil is soaked in 50% KOH aqueous solution prior to microwave irradiation, a significantly higher surface area of carbon is obtained, consisting of irregular-shaped porous particles. Consequently, the obtained carbon can easily decolorize a methylene blue aqueous solution, can be used to make pocket warmers or gunpowder, and lastly, serves as an excellent adsorbent towards Cr(VI) removal from water, showing a maximum adsorption capacity of 70–75 mg/g within 24 h at 23 °C, pH = 3.

This paper presents the utilization of bamboo residue from the chopstick industry as modified carbon (AC) for supercapacitor application.  Bamboo activated carbon (BAC) was activated using Potassium hydroxide (KOH) and assisted with microwave ultrasonic (Mw-U) irradiation to enhance the properties of bamboo activated carbon (BAC). Different microwave (Mw) power intensities of 100 W, 300 W, and 500 W at 30 minutes of retention time have been applied on activation and the carbonization process was conducted at temperature 800°C. The BAC was analyzed for the morphology using a scanning electron microscope and proximate and ultimate analysis. Then BAC with the higher surface area was subjected to the electrochemical analysis to determine the electrochemical properties. The study indicated Mw-U irradiation improved the morphology of the BAC, eliminated the impurity of the sample, and gave higher carbon content of BAC. The findings show that lower Mw-U irradiation power provided a higher surface area of BAC. The surface area of 646.87 m2/g and total pore volume of 2.8x10-1 cm3/g was obtained with a power intensity of Mw-U activation at 100 W. While, electrochemical properties, the specific capacitance (Cs) of BAC was 77 Fg-1 at 25 mVs-1 in 1 mol/L KOH of electrolyte for cyclic voltammetry (CV) which indicates the ability of the prepared BAC to be used as an electrode in supercapacitor application. This study determined that Mw-U irradiation can improve the properties of the bamboo during chemical activation and formed BAC that consists of supercapacitor properties.

Abstract. The results of experimental studies are presented, the purpose of which was to study the influence of variable formulation and technological factors on the rheological characteristics of the foam concrete mixture, in particular, the structural strength. This is preceded by an analysis of the process of structure formation of cellular concrete. As a result, it is shown that the properties of cellular concrete are determined by the nature of the distribution of the solid component. The structure of the solid phase is formed at the earliest stages of the formation of cellular products and depends on the rheological characteristics of the mortar and cellular mixture. In the technology of cellular concrete, it is important to synchronize the processes of pore formation and the growth of plastic (structural) strength, which is also associated with a change in the rheological properties of the mixture. Using the methods of mathematical statistics, the influence of the content of the filler in the mixture with cement, the content of the complex additive, and the effect of mechanical chemical activation on the kinetics of the plastic strength of the foam concrete mixture were studied. The kinetic dependences of the plastic strength of the foam concrete mixture in the range of 6 ... 24 hours from the moment of manufacture have been constructed. Each of the 15 curves is maximized by a 3rd-degree polynomial. Based on the obtained dependences, they are differentiated between the first and second derivatives. As a result, the equations of the speed and intensity (acceleration) of the plastic strength of the foam concrete mixture were obtained. According to the results of the previous experiment, carried out according to a three-factor plan, a 4-factor plan was synthesized, in which the aging period of the foam concrete mixture was taken as the fourth factor. The calculated theoretical values of the characteristics of the structural strength of the foam concrete mixture were entered into the matrix. As a result, mathematical models of plastic strength, speed, and intensity of plastic strength of the foam concrete mixture were calculated and the influence of variable factors studied on the isosurfaces of these properties was visualized. The analysis of these dependencies made it possible to determine the characteristic recipe and technological conditions for obtaining a foam concrete mixture with the required values of plastic strength.

Abstract Sewage sludge is carbonaceous organic material and an inevitable by-product of biological wastewater treatment process. The traditional sludge disposal routes may cause serious pollution risks, e. g. large amounts of carbon emissions. Molten salt synthesis (MSS) method could complete the carbonization and activation two processes within a single-step, and the complexity of chemical activation process could be significantly reduced. In this work, sludge derived activated carbon (SDAC) was prepared by MSS method with ZnCl2 . The mass ratio of ZnCl2 to sludge had a significant effect on both the physicochemical properties and surface chemistry of SDAC. As the mass ratio of ZnCl2 to sludge was 1, the maximum specific surface area of SDAC was 549.72 m2/g. The maximum adsorbing capacity of methylene blue (MB) and CO2 were 0.0786 and 0.0575 mg/mg(SDAC), respectively. The highest yield and carbon utilization potential of SDAC were 517.87 mg(SDAC)/g(sludge) and 178.56 mg(carbon)/g(sludge), respectively. According to carbon mass balance, the total carbon mass in SDAC adsorbed MB and CO2 can be achieved to 203.00 and 186.68 mg(carbon)/g(sludge), respectively. It was suggested that MSS method can be used to reduce carbon emissions and improve carbon adsorption during SDAC preparation.

Emission of light by matter can occur through a variety of mechanisms. When it results from an electronically excited state of a species produced by a chemical reaction, it is called chemiluminescence (CL). The phenomenon can take place both in natural and artificial chemical systems and it has been utilized in a variety of applications. In this review, we aim to revisit some of the latest CL applications based on direct and indirect production modes. The characteristics of the chemical reactions and the underpinning CL mechanisms are thoroughly discussed in view of studies from the very recent bibliography. Different methodologies aiming at higher CL efficiencies are summarized and presented in detail, including CL type and scaffolds used in each study. The CL role in the development of efficient therapeutic platforms is also discussed in relation to the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and singlet oxygen (1O2) produced, as final products. Moreover, recent research results from our team are included regarding the behavior of commonly used photosensitizers upon chemical activation under CL conditions. The CL prospects in imaging, biomimetic organic and radical chemistry, and therapeutics are critically presented in respect to the persisting challenges and limitations of the existing strategies to date.

Rice husk has been converted into activated carbon for the adsorbent to remove the heavy metal from the aqueous solution. This study aimed to convert rice husk to activated carbon (AC) for use in the adsorption of Fe ions in a fixed-bed column. Rice husk was first pyrolyzed in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas at 400 oC, then a chemical activation method using sodium hydroxide. The rice husk activated carbon (RH-AC) was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) to identify the functional group and microstructure of carbon. The performance of the carbon was tested on the Fe removal from an aqueous solution in a continuous column. The adsorption process was carried out using Fe solution with an initial concentration of 3 mg/L as an artificial sample. The amount of carbon is 25, and 50 g were filled in an adsorber column with a diameter of 5.4 cm and height of 40 cm. SEM images revealed that the activated carbons shown with well-developed pore sizes and pore structure were produced after the chemical activation.  The FTIR absorption bands observed in the RH-AC sample confirmed the presence of hydroxyl (-OH), carbonyl, and carboxylic (-COOH) groups of RH-AC adsorbent. The highest Fe removal efficiencies were 91.9% on chemically activated carbon and column mass 50 g at 400 minutes. The overall study revealed the potential value of chemically activated RH-AC as a possible commercial adsorbent in a continuous column wastewater treatment strategy.
